    PROLOGUE

E VER SINCE I became a vampire, I always felt the need to move. Like my body was restless and unable to find peace. I tried to work on making use of the new powers I’d been given, but I never was able to satisfy the restlessness my body felt. At first, I tried simple things like running or swimming or other simple exercises when the need came around and it worked…for a short amount of time. It didn’t take long before my body needed something more.

A friend, who owned a gym, knew about my problem and did what he could to help. He offered the gym to me anytime I needed it. I tried all the work-outs there were, but none of them lasted long enough to satisfy the feeling. He did everything he could to help me and even offered to see if there was something more behind the restlessness. I declined his offer because I wanted to figure out the problem myself. So, opening the gym up to me was his best way of helping.

I tried everything I could think of to satisfy my restless body. I even travelled around the world to pick up the fighting styles they had to offer in hopes that one of them would be enough. Though I could master each style effortlessly, none kept the need to move at bay for long. For five years, I worked on finding the proper solution and the few friends I had did their best to help me. Each new trick or work out only worked for a short period of time and it didn’t take long for me to grow tired of one thing and have the need for something different…something harder.

As my sixteenth year as a vampire started, I found the answer I’d been looking for. It had taken quite some time, but I knew it was it. The one thing I knew I could never grow tired of or lose interest in because it would hold a new experience every day. There would be a new challenge every time and provided my body with the relief it was in desperate need of. It was the perfect solution to my problem.

On a building door, there was a small and simple note. The words that were on the piece of paper caught my eye instantly and I stopped to read it. As my eyes ran across the word, a small smile came to my lips as I realized what was being asked. To a human, the sign was simply asking for a hard worker willing to do whatever was asked of them. But, to a vampire, what the job was looking for was something much more.

Wanted: A very skillful person that has no fear of doing whatever job is asked of them. Money is no object for the task and the reward is a high offer. More information will be given when you call the number below.

I immediately pulled out my cell phone and dialed the number that was written. I was asked a few questions from the person on the other line and answered each question truthfully. It didn’t take long before they decided I was fit for the job. The final question they asked me was if I minded killing people. I answered the question without hesitation, for what vampire minds killing a few people? It is in our nature and something one comes to terms with quickly after being turned. But, the person on the other end did not know that I was a creature of the night and I knew didn’t care. All they wanted was someone who would do the job they asked without any questions. The next thing I knew, I had become an assassin…

After that first job, I knew it was best to keep my identity a secret. So, for every job I was hired to do, I wore a mask to keep my face hidden from anyone who might see me. If people found out my true identity, it would throw my life into chaos. The reason being, I did not just do jobs for humans. I was open to do any job anyone offered me as long as I was paid properly and that meant, even going after creatures from my own world…

I did have one particular mask I wore more than any of the others in my collection. It was one I had gotten during my travels around the world and it was the one I wore to meet the people who were hiring me. It was a light purple mask with jewels and very intricate designs. It covered the upper part of my face, hugging my nose while the sides reached around to my temple. Above my right eye, feathers pulled up from the mask itself reached towards the sky. The mask hid my identity well and it had a special elegance to it that impressed all who I met.

Fifty-five years later, I had become the top assassin in the world and everyone who needed a hired killer, fought to hire me. I was in high demand and very good at what I did. I used the skills I had learned while trying to satisfy the restlessness I felt. I used every opportunity to master more and more skills to improve my abilities.

I’m now sixty-three years old in vampire years and I’ve earned plenty of money and gained more skills than any other creature I’ve met or known. My job is my life…or un-life, so to speak. I’ve never worried about things or felt like my identity had been exposed…but, for the past few months, something has felt different to me.

I do well at covering my tracks whenever I go on a job and return. But, I have been having this feeling as if someone, or something, has been attempting to follow me.

As a vampire, I know there is danger all around even for the world’s top predator. I never take the same road twice and always spread my scent around as much as possible. Should someone truly be following me, I will be prepared to defend myself. There will be only a small amount of pity I feel for anyone who thinks it is a good idea to come after me…

    Scorpia

    CHAPTER ONE

S CORPIA, YOU’VE CHANGED. Matt stated as I entered his gym. I glanced at him and studied his appearance for a second.

Not really. I can’t exactly change, remember? Vampires are ‘frozen in time’. We don’t change no matter how many years have gone by. I replied with a sly grin as I leaned against the wall.

Funny, real funny. That’s not what I meant and you know it. There’s something different about you. Something about the aura you give off. That’s the best way I can explain it. He said. I shrugged and walked over to the counter.

It has been awhile since I’ve visited you. What? About six or seven years, give or take? On and off possibly more? A lot can change in that amount of time. I know we talked in that time, but only on the phone. I commented, jumping up on the part of the counter next to the sink. I sat there and looked at him.

His hair was short, barely touching his ears, and still the black color he’d always had it. His brown eyes seemed a little darker than the last time I had seen him and his face was a little smoother. But, he was still the vampire who had helped me my first years as a vampire while I struggled accepting what had happened to me. He was still the Matt who I’d grown to care about and call a friend.

That’s not it, Scorpia. The amount of time that’s passed since we last saw each other has nothing to do with what’s different about you. I know you all too well. You have changed. What have you been doing? Matt asked, scrunching his eyes a little as he studied my face. I smiled, flashing my fangs a little as I shrugged.

Nothing that hasn’t kept me satisfied. Just some things that help pass the endless time I am never in short supply of. I responded. Matt shook his head as he walked up to me and took hold of my hands. He looked directly into my hazel eyes and I looked directly back into his brown ones.

You are still as mysterious as ever. Filled with so many secrets. One day, you will find the one being on this earth that you will never be able to hide secrets from. And when that day comes, I promise that I will be there to witness it. He said. I grinned and jumped off the counter. I walked over to a punching bag and balled my hands into fists.

How’s business been? I asked, changing the subject as I started to punch the bag. I know he meant well, but I didn’t like talking about myself.

Pretty good. I’ve started getting more vampire customers lately so business has really picked up. It’s a bit interesting really. He answered as he moved behind to hold the bag while I continued to punch it.

Is there something wrong with having vampire customers? You are a vampire yourself, you know that right? It would be very hypocritical for a vampire, who owns a gym, to discriminate against having vampire customers. I remarked as I did a right hook and put power behind it. He held the bag firmly and shook his head.

Of course not. I have nothing against vampires coming here. Especially when they bring money. It’s just different and new is all. In the past few years, the numbers have greatly increased of how many come in. The rise in numbers is what surprises me the most, I guess. When I first opened this gym, I was lucky to see any beings from our world come in. Now, they are almost the majority of customers I get. It’s like something has got them worried and needing to brush up on their skills. He responded. I stopped and looked at him, glaring a little as I scrutinized the look on his face.

There’s something you’re trying to say, Matt. Quit dancing around and just spill it. We’ve known each other far too long to play silly little games like this. You know how I hate it when people beat around the bush. I would rather they just come straight out and say what is on their minds. So, get it out already. I said, dropping my hands to my side. He sighed and released the bag as he sat down on the floor. I sat down in front of him and waited for him to start talking, my eyes never looking away from his.

I’ve been hearing a lot of things lately. Stuff from our world. Normally, I brush them aside since most stories in our world rarely turn out to be true. Most of the time, it’s just some creature trying to create a reputation for itself so lies come out of its mouth like candy. But lately, I’ve heard some things that I can’t just brush aside like all the others. This stuff…well, it sounds very much true and it’s got me worried. He started, his voice lowering just a little.

What stuff have you heard, Matt? I asked, leaning back on my elbows and raising a curious eyebrow.

There are rumors or talk going around about a vampire who has been hiring themselves out as an assassin. Someone willing to be a killer for higher that accepts practically any job they’re offered with no questions asked. They get a call, kill someone, and collect the money. A female vampire, to be more specific. He finished, his eyes narrowing a bit. I stared at him, my facial expression not changing or even twitching.

    And?

Scorpia, I know you. I know you better than anyone else and know how badly you have been trying to find something to appease your constant need to move. Even now, your feet are twitching. I know everything that you’ve tried and all the travelling you’ve done to find something. I know of all the skills you’ve collected and how you’ve become an expert in practically all of them. I know that they only appeased your need briefly and you’ve still been searching for something better. Being an assassin would satisfy that need since each job would require something more of you. It would actually be the ultimate solution. He explained. I stopped my feet as I looked at him.

What are you trying to say, Matt? I questioned, remaining completely still. It was hard, but when I focused, I managed a few seconds of peace before I had to move again.

You know what I’m saying, Scorpia. Being a vampire assassin can be dangerous. There could always be that one job that could claim your life. Someone could easily set up a trap for you and you’d walk right into it thinking it was just another day on the job. I’ve heard a few vampires talking and they want to find out who the assassin is and take care of her. They aren’t happy with what she’s been doing. They want her dead. He said.

Are you trying to make a point? I pressed, leaning forward a little. Matt stared directly into my eyes, his brown ones unwavering from the point he was trying to make. The point I already knew, but wanted him to say it out loud.

I know you’re the assassin. I knew it the second I heard talk about it. It had you written all over it to me. The perfect fit for someone in constant need of motion. Don’t even try to deny it because you cannot lie to me. Never could before and you can’t now. It is you and others want you dead. You need to be extremely careful. He responded, without flinching.

I am careful. None of my employers know what I really look like. I wear masks to hide my identity. I give a fake name and never meet near my home. I cover my tracks and watch every move I make. No one has a clue who I am and those who hire me have no idea what I am. I said with a smile. Matt shook his head and jumped to his feet. He walked off into his office and I jumped up and followed him.

What’s wrong, Matt? I haven’t seen you upset like this before. This really isn’t like you. I asked as I leaned forward on his desk while he sat down in the chair behind it. He glanced at me as he let out a light laugh of disbelief.

You’re asking me what’s wrong? Scorpia, you’ve hired and continue to hire yourself out as an assassin. You are putting yourself in dangerous situations and on purpose! You may be a vampire, but you aren’t completely invincible! There are still ways for you to die. Not to mention the fact that you could risk exposing our kind to humans and should you do it to the wrong person, say a hunter, all hell could break loose in our world, starting with your death! You are wanted, Scorpia! They might not know who you are but they are working like hell to figure it out! Each job you take could be the last one. So many things could go wrong! he answered, growing angry. I blinked as I straightened myself up and crossed my arms across my chest.

You honestly think I’ll get caught? That I might slip-up like that? I’m not that stupid! I’m not some naïve fledgling who doesn’t know what to do to keep my tracks covered! I cover them well so others don’t realize who and what I am! I am not new to being a vampire! I know the dangers out there and know the risks! I am not an idiot, Matt! I hissed. He looked up at me and glared.

Scorpia, I know that you think you are a very experienced vampire. You’re only sixty-three! Older vampires have made mistakes that cost them their lives! You could easily slip up, just like any vampire no matter how old they are! It takes only one stupid mistake to claim your life! Haven’t you thought of that? he said with a snarl. I narrowed my eyes as I felt my own anger start to rise.

Yes! That is why I keep my identity hidden! I promise you, Matt, I am being extremely careful! I don’t need you telling me how to do a job I’ve been doing for quite some time now. And I don’t need you talking to me like I’m some stupid newborn! I replied as I focused on keeping myself from losing my temper. I understood Matt’s concerns and where he was coming from so I didn’t want to let myself lose control. He was only showing he cared and in my life, I had few who did. He was one of the few, very few, who did…

I don’t mean to make it seem like I think of you as a newborn, Scorpia. But, it seems that you aren’t being careful enough. There are some vampires that are trying to find out exactly who the assassin is so they can find her and take care of her. They are pulling all resources possible to discover your identity. Our entire world knows it is a vampire who is the assassin. They know, despite how careful you have been, that the assassin looks female and assumes as much, though some believe it could also be a magic spell or something. For the most part, they are sticking with the fact that it is a female and is a vampire, but are prepared for something else. He explained.

Why do they care? What is so wrong with being a hired killer? Vampires are good at it. We are good at it. It is what we do; it’s what keeps us alive. I’m just making a profit out of it. I asked, sitting down in one of the chairs.

Because of the risk of exposure! If you screw up, we all could get exposed! The risk is too high for others to just ignore it. We have kept our world a secret from humans. We’ve worked hard to stay hidden from the hunters that are out there and that is the way our kind wants it to stay. They will do anything to keep it that way. He answered the look in his brown eyes very serious.

But I won’t screw up, Matt! I told you, I am extremely careful! I argued.

For now. There’s always tomorrow or your next job. It only takes one thing to cause exposure. One little slip up on a fang or strength, anything unnatural for a human to do and questions start to rise. Once that happens, you will be hunted down and dealt with. You know how people in our world are dealt with. He said, looking at me. My eyes went wide for a brief second. It took me a minute before the slight surprise faded then I chuckled and shook my head.

Well, that won’t happen. I cover my tracks and watch my back so there’s nothing to worry about. I replied then stood. I appreciate your warnings and concerns, Matt. I really do, but I must go. I need to check my messages at home for any jobs. I turned and left his office. He stood and followed me as I headed to the door.

Scorpia, are you listening to me? he asked as he grabbed my shoulder. I spun and grabbed his wrist, squeezing it just tight enough to cause him a little bit of discomfort. To give him a warning.

Don’t do that again… I looked him squarely in the eyes to ensure he understood the warning before I released his wrist. I am listening to you. I listened to every word, but I am just not worried about it right now. Don’t worry about me so much, okay? I’m not a young vampire anymore and I’ve learned a lot in my sixty-three years. I’ve gotten good at handling myself and even better about remaining invisible when needed. I’m going to be just fine, I promise. I said then left.

    CHAPTER TWO

A LL THE THINGS that Matt had said ran through my head as I walked the streets of the small city I was living in. The city wasn’t too small but nor was it too big. It is called Riverbend and not a place others know about unless they are really looking for it. I, myself, call it ‘Lobo’, which is the Spanish word for ‘wolf’. I call it that simply because it sounds better than Riverbend. Plus, if I call it that, anyone who might accidentally over hear me saying it, won’t have a clue where I am talking about.

Lobo fits the city because there aren’t really any river bends anywhere but there are tons of dogs that remind me of wolves. Plus, I sometimes get jobs that are out of town and need a cover name for my home. I had to come up with something that would be believable, but fictional. Something that wouldn’t be connected easily to any place, let alone my home.

I reached the building where I was living and walked in. It was a large apartment building where I’d bought the entire fourth floor and renovated it into a luxurious home for myself. I had my privacy without interruption from neighbors and since I’d given more than enough money for it, the owners didn’t mind. They even helped me transform it into the perfect home space. It’s amazing what money will do for you.

Owning the entire floor and not having close neighbors also meant there was no one around to bring questions about my odd hours and the outfits I wore. No questions asked meant being able to stay invisible was easier. I had all the room I wanted and it still looked nice in case I ever had any visitors. Not that I ever had any, but it was the best way to keep the appearance of being human. You never know when one might stop by trying to be friendly.

I said hello to the doorman, who smiled back at me, then headed to the elevator. When the doors opened, I stepped in and leaned against the back wall, resting my head against it as I let out a tired sigh. The talk with Matt had taken a lot more out of me than I thought it had. I appreciated his concern for my safety, but it had angered me of how careless he made it sound like I was. I knew he only worried about me since he was the only one who was there for me when I was in my first few years as a vampire. It still unnerved me a bit at how he had talked to me.

I knew his concerns were valid. There were vampires out there who were careless and as a result, lost their lives to hunters or other beings that enjoyed killing our kind. Most vampires that were careless, though, were young ones. Ones who’d been freshly turned and didn’t have anyone there to help them and teach them the rules. I, thankfully, had Matt when I had been turned. He helped me to learn to hunt without leaving bodies and if there was a body, he taught me the proper way to disguise it so that it couldn’t be traced back to a vampire by a hunter.

The doors started to close when a hand quickly stopped them and pushed them back open. A young man stepped in and offered a kind smile as he pushed a floor number. It took a minute before the doors closed, but when they did, the elevator was quick to start moving. I glanced at him for a second, taking in his appearance.

He looked about six even with an average build. It seemed like he had a little more arm muscle than the average guy but not bulging like most body builders. I thought back to when he’d first stepped onto the elevator and the color of his eyes. They were a beautiful shade of green, an uncommon color for human eyes. His hair was short and its color reminded me of the bark on a pine tree. It was a dark brown, but not the dark its almost black.

I returned my gaze forward but continued to study him from the corner of my eyes, not wanting him to know I was so interested in him. Humans tend to get a little uneasy when they noticed some stranger watching them. Granted, for guys, it tended to intrigue them when it was a beautiful woman. One of the benefits of being a vampire meant I had a sense of beauty. Downside is it tended to draw a lot of guys my way, not all being good looking or good natured. Not that I wasn’t able to handle myself, but there were times I would have preferred staying under the radar. So, I made sure he didn’t notice that I was studying every part of him, just in case he turned out to be a crazy.

His skin was slightly tan, like he worked outside a lot. I noted his hands looked like they knew hard work. Judging by the look of his face, he looked about twenty-nine or so. Not much older than I had been when I was human. I felt sure he had brains on him and knew how to work. Most humans didn’t know what work was anymore. They had most everything given to them now. I recalled seeing a group of teenagers in the mall once bragging how mommy and daddy paid for everything so they would never have to get a job. Poor suckers. Adulthood was going to knock them all on their ass.

But this young man…I could tell instantly that wasn’t the case for him. He wasn’t like most people I saw around that age and younger. Nothing was handed to him. He worked for everything he needed and wasn’t afraid of a challenge. He knew that to get what he wanted, he had to earn it. It wasn’t going to be given to him. It had made him strong, judging by how he held himself. His head was high, but not the snobby kind of high. The kind of high that showed life had beat him down several times, but he was still standing. He simply had grown from the experiences he’d gone through.

I continued to make little notes about how he looked while he stared at the closed metal doors. A few seconds went by before he shocked me by speaking. When he did, I felt myself jump just a little and get pulled from my studying.

You look new to me. How long have you been here? he asked, looking at me.

About five years now. I answered with a kind smile. You couldn’t accuse me of not being friendly, even when I wasn’t in the mood.

Wow! That long? Well, I’m glad to meet you finally. My name is Joe. Joe Tate. I’ve been here about six years. I live on the fifth floor. Apartment 5A. He introduced himself, extending his hand. I looked at him, keeping the kind smile.

Rachael. Rachael Carp. I live on the fourth floor. I replied, taking his hand. As soon as my hand touched his, a shock went through me. It was like a tiny jolt of electricity had been exposed to my veins and went to every nerve in my body, spreading quickly.

It shook me for a brief second and caused my fangs to extend a little and I had to make sure I kept my mouth closed until they settled back into place. I thought it had only been me to feel it, but I could tell by the look on his face he had felt it too. I immediately let go of his hand and stepped back away from him.

What the hell was that? he asked as he stared at his hand. My back hit the railing that was in the elevator and I froze. I couldn’t get any further away from him, but I wished I could have. I didn’t know what had happened but I was afraid it would happen again. My only hope was that it was only if we touched and that he wouldn’t come any closer.

I…I have no idea. I whispered as I stared at my own hand. We stood in quiet shock for what seemed like hours before the doors opened on my floor.

Is…is this your floor? Joe asked, looking up at me. I blinked and looked at the floor number. Sure enough, the number four was lit up and I slowly nodded.

Yes, it is. Umm…Thanks. I mumbled as I quickly stepped out of the elevator. I made sure that I didn’t get close to him as I slid out. I headed to my door as I heard the elevator doors close behind me. I quickly got my door open and slipped inside. I kicked the door shut then headed straight to my bedroom and sat on the end of the bed.

I stared at my hand, trying to figure out what exactly had just happened. I’d never had something like that happen before and I wasn’t sure exactly what really had happened. I’d never had that feeling before when I touched a human and in my line of work, I’d touched several humans. It had surprised me and the fact that he had felt it too meant I wasn’t just imagining it had happened. He was just a human, no connection to the supernatural world. Something had to be the cause of the shock, but I could not put my finger on it.

Finally, after a few short minutes, I shook my head and got to my feet. It was a problem I would either figure out later or not have to worry about again. We had never met before and I doubted we would see each other again. There was no reason to concern myself over it. It had happened and though it was odd, I felt it was something that might not happen again.

I walked into my living room and pushed the button on my answering machine. It had been hard to find one in this day and age, when everyone preferred cell phones over home phones, but I didn’t want to give out my cell phone. The machine was my safe key. Potential employers got the number to it and only it so that if anyone tried to track me down, they would have a hard time. Who knew that things considered antique these days could still prove to be so useful?

While it started to run its usual spill about how many new and how many old messages there were, I sat down in a chair and took off my shoes. The first few messages were pointless so I ignored them. I started to take my jacket off when the next message caught my ear. I paused and turned all my attention to the machine as it repeated the message.

A…friend gave me your number. He uh…he told me you were the best in the business and that is what I am looking for. I…I need the best for this little task. I have a job for you and will offer whatever amount of money you ask for. I…I need you to get rid of couple people for me. It’s…I need it done as soon as possible. Please give me a call when you get this message. If you choose to accept it, I will be happy to meet with you and provide you with all you will need to know about the job. He recited his phone number after it then there was a click as the message finished.

It was obvious that this guy was unsure about wanting to hire someone to kill somebody else. To kill a couple of people, actually. I could tell he wasn’t real confident about hiring a killer and wherever he had made the call from, he feared someone over hearing him. Either could be true because in this line of business, many people are cautious about hiring someone to kill another person and are always worried someone might over-hear the phone call. I had learned that when I first got into the business.

Whatever had caused the uneasiness in his voice, I only hoped that it didn’t affect his choice of hiring me. I’d had a few people who ended up backing out shortly after we had met in person or directly after calling me. I would get another call saying they had changed their minds and that they didn’t need my services. They had decided it just wasn’t what they wanted after all. I hoped this didn’t go that way because it seemed he didn’t care about the cost for hiring me. I could use that to my advantage.

Hmm…it has been some time since I’d been hired to get rid of two people. This could be a good job and I get to name my price for it. I said to myself. That could open some nice doors, I think. I threw my jacket on a chair then flopped onto the couch and stared up at the ceiling for a few seconds.

Risika! Here kitty kitty! I called as I sat up. I heard a little growl then shortly afterwards, my cat came into the room. I had traveled a lot in my vampire years. During those travels, I managed to find the one animal I knew I could not be without the second I saw her. She, in return, had shared the feeling for me. We had a special connection and I valued it deeply.

The beautiful cheetah came right up to me and sat beside my legs. I bent down and scratched her ears. She turned and licked my cheek. I smiled and rested my head against hers for a few seconds. She started to purr then moved and laid down at my feet. I stared at her then let out a sigh. I still couldn’t put everything out of my head that Matt had said. It seemed to be persistent about bugging me no matter how hard I tried to push it away.

Risika, do you think what I’m doing is reckless and dangerous? I asked as I looked into her golden eyes. She looked at me and tilted her head to the side just a little bit. I shrugged my shoulders at the expression and got up, heading to the kitchen to get her some food. I set the dish down and she immediately dug in. While she ate, I headed to my mask closet and opened the doors.

I stared at my collection, taking in all the different ones I had. After a few seconds, I reached and grabbed my favorite one. The one I wore whenever I met potential clients. I traced the etched design then gently touched the jewels.

The mask was a light purple with gold around the eyes as well as on the tips of the hard feathers. There were jewels that were placed throughout the mask. Framing the eyes was a purple glitter that expanded a little on the right side. There was gold lace that traced the outline of the mask and small swirls on the brim of the nose up to the part that rested on the forehead. It was very elegant mask, one that I loved greatly. I admired it for a little longer before putting it back on its stand and stepping back, closing the doors to the closet.

Thoughts of what Matt had said grew dim as a new thought came up. Though I had thought it was nothing to worry about, it had come back to the front of my mind rather quickly. The scene of what happened in the elevator played again as I went to my bathroom and prepared to take a shower. I’d never had the shock I felt when I touched Joe happen before…

I’d been a vampire for a long time and in that time, I’d always been in contact with humans. It was hard not to be because they are all over. In my travels, it was humans that taught me the variety of fighting skills I had learned. They had touched me to help get the right stances or right movements. None of the contact I’d had with them had caused a shock like that…not even a bee sting feeling.

I’ve touched a countless number of humans with all the jobs I’ve done. Handshake greetings, some a kiss on the cheek. Not once had I been shocked and that was something I knew I would have remembered if it had happened. There was no way I could forget something like that.

This was the first time. It had almost knocked me on my ass and completely confused me yet had sparked a curiosity in me. What would have caused something like that to happen? Why did it happen with this human and not the millions of others I had been in contact with? It had to be something caused by supernatural means, but after thinking about it, I figured it wasn’t on the important list. I had more pressing things to worry about. I had a new job with the possibility of lots of cash and I had Matt’s warnings about other vampires hunting for who the assassin really was. I reminded myself that the touch probably would not happen again.

I looked at my hand briefly then shook my head as I grabbed my clothes and set them on the dresser in the bathroom. I turned on the water and stretched my arms before undressing and climbing in. I let the hot water wash all the thoughts away and relax all my tense muscles. There was no need to stress about such small things while there were bigger things going on. Besides that, I hated feeling stressed while enjoying a nice, hot shower.

I stood in the shower for almost twenty minutes, enjoying the hot water and how it made me feel so relaxed. When I finished, I climbed out and wrapped a towel around myself before exiting the bathroom and going over to my phone. I picked it up and dialed the number from the message that was left on my machine. A man answered after a couple rings and I spoke to him with caution. I asked if he had called me earlier and mentioned the name potential and past clients knew me as. He recognized it immediately and became very excited that I had returned his call. Whatever uneasiness he had had when he’d first called me seemed to be gone now.

Miss Gordon, I cannot tell you how glad I am that you have returned my call! I…I was a little worried you wouldn’t at first. I…Well, to be honest, Miss Gordon, I almost rethought the whole thing. But, then I remembered the initial reason I called you and I told myself it was worth it. My friend said you were always up for new jobs and that you wasted no time in getting back to people. I almost didn’t believe him, but now, I am proven wrong.

Wasting time means that one is wasting money. I’m afraid I don’t like to do either of those things. I responded.

Yes, yes of course. Well, I would love to discuss the job with you further. Can you meet me at the Rio Grande Restaurant? That is, if it is not too far away for you? I’m afraid I don’t know where you live, which is understandable. We can meet somewhere else if you would like? He offered. His comment sparked a slight warning in my head. Commenting about my place of living rarely happens. But, his friend was the one who gave him my number. Perhaps that had something to do with it. Whatever the reason, I would use extra caution when meeting him.

No, the Rid Grande is just fine. I answered kindly.

What time is convenient for you? he asked. I smiled to myself and glanced at my watch. The day was almost over and it was too late to meet for a job tonight. At least, for a human it was too late. For me, it was a decent time. Granted, after what had happened with Matt, I needed to take some time to group. I needed rest and a clear mind before going out. It wouldn’t look good to meet a future client looking as tired as I did or as concerned. I am supposed to be a professional. I need to show that and that wasn’t going to happen tonight.

Tomorrow evening fifteen to midnight would work for me. The Rio Grande is open late and I am a night owl. They also have a great late-night menu, as far as drinks are concerned. Is that alright? I know that might be a bit late for you. I waited as I expected an argument or something about the time. Humans might like to party, but that is when they are young and stupid. This guy sounded old and mature. It might be too late for him. Might be passed his bedtime. So, I waited for the argument about the time but it never came. The response I got shocked me.

Yes, Miss Gordon. That would be fine. It is nice to meet someone else who enjoys the night as much as I do. And you are correct in the drinks at that time. I have always enjoyed the late-night menu there. I look forward to our meeting and shall see you tomorrow evening. He said goodbye then hung up the phone. I hung up mine then turned to find Risika standing in the doorway of my bedroom. She cocked her head to the right and I smiled.

You want a warm fire tonight, dear friend? She lowered her head in a small nod then went off into the living room. I went to the bathroom and dressed before heading into the living room. I went over to the fireplace and turned on the gas-powered fire.

I stepped back a little bit and sat on the floor as I watched the fire come to life. The flames danced inside the fireplace and I stared at them, captivated by the beauty and power they held. There’s the saying that if you play with fire, you are bound to get burned. Watching the flames, I thought of that as well as all Matt had said to me. Perhaps I was playing with fire and sooner or later, I was going to get burned… But, I couldn’t think like that. That wasn’t who I was. I was a vampire. I’d been very careful ever since I became an assassin and I had no intentions of doing anything different. I wasn’t going to get burned quite yet.

I was so mesmerized by the flames and my thoughts that I did not sense an unwanted visitor had entered my home. But, Risika knew someone unwelcomed was there and it was her growl that pulled me from the trance quickly. I spun around as I jumped to my feet and grabbed a dagger from off the mantle. I held the handle tightly as I pointed the blade at the intruder, my eyes narrowing as I worked on focusing on him.

The fire is lovely. I love how the flames look so beautiful even with all the danger that they possess. Such danger yet such beauty. There are many such things in the world. The intruder remarked as he sat on the couch.

Fire, like many things, pulls people in with its beauty before it makes a strike. Like a cobra coils in such an elegant way before taking a deadly strike. I replied. Do you mind telling me why you are here and how exactly you got into my home? I kept my blade held straight while Risika moved to my side. Her eyes remained on him while she snarled a little, her teeth showing from under the curl of her lips. She was ready to attack should he try anything. I, myself, was just as ready should I feel the need to fight.

I get the distinct feeling that you don’t like me. And, the snarls tell me your cheetah doesn’t either. How disconcerting seeing’s how we just met. He commented, glancing at Risika. I shrugged, keeping my eyes on him as I lowered a hand and touched her head.

You weren’t invited in here and since this is our home, we will not accept you so easily. Why would we feel any differently about you than to feel a very large dislike for you? Plus, you have yet to answer my questions. Forgive us if we aren’t very welcoming. I said, glaring. He chuckled and shook his head.

Forgive me. It is easy for one to sneak into places when it is what one does for a living. That is how I got here. When I want to get into somewhere, I am able to rather easily. No matter who…or what lives there. He arched an eyebrow as he looked at me. The reason that I am here will come out after I ask you a few questions. He flashed a smile that I was sure had to have broken several women’s hearts. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t going to work on me. I didn’t break so easily.

If you want me to answer any questions, you had better first tell me your name. Seeing’s how this is my home, things I want will take precedence over your wants. I responded. He chuckled and leaned forward a little.

A woman who knows what she wants and how to handle herself. Something tells me I could really grow to like you. He flashed his smile again and I just rolled my eyes.

Name. I want your name. I said, growing impatient at his games. Risika gave a low growl as she retracted her claws in and out into the carpet. He arched an eyebrow and leaned back.

Forty-niner. He chuckled as he emphasized the numbers. Another growl filled the room but this time, it had come from me.

I’m not in the mood for childish games! Answer me honestly or get out! I snapped, dropping my arms to my sides and squeezing the dagger tightly in my hand. I turned it just a little bit so that the blade caught some of the light that was in the room and showed him that I was prepared for a fight.

Alright, alright. Relax a little, Scorpia. Risika snarled, her lips pulling back to completely expose her feline fangs, when he mentioned my name. I glanced down at her briefly and could see how tense her body was and knew she was just seconds from pouncing. I slowly turned back to look at him and glared.

How the hell do you know my name? I hissed, taking a step towards him and raising my dagger. Risika took a step forward as well, keeping herself directly at my side. He flashed his pathetic smile and winked at me.

I have my sources, sweetheart. Ones I don’t care to disclose. To answer your other question from before. I am here because there is a vampire in the world that is hiring herself out as an assassin. Since word travels fast in our world, I’m sure you’ve already heard about that. I eyed him closely as I slowly nodded. "I understand you are quite the fighter and take extremely good care of yourself. You are unlike hardly any others of our kind and I find
