About this ebook
Karin Burtscher
Born (17th of May 1957) and raised in Vienna/Austria it became apparent very soon that I couldn’t live without dogs and horses. And I also love sports, music, art and nature. Some years ago I moved to the countryside and now I’m in the happy position of living with my border collie in a national park close to the Austrian-Hungarian border. My native tongue is German but I also speak English and Hungarian.

Thoughts Between Heaven and Earth - Karin Burtscher
Melancholy
Sometimes you’d like to turn back the clock,
but sadly, time flies, and you’re in for a shock.
Unstoppably and dismally, you get on in years,
and that’s why you can’t dam up your tears.
Your spirit is young, and your brain works well,
but your body grows old, so somehow it’s hell.
You had a nice body - you’re sporty and glad -
but it can’t be helped, so it drives you mad.
You’re hurt cos only youth counts these days.
You rail against your fate for the game that it plays.
And you wish you were younger, – only ten years.
It would make you happy and distract your fears.
To be good-looking is of no advantage to you.
So just smile, and go on though you feel blue.
The best years of your life will never come back.
Accept that shit, and don’t stray from the track!
Night Frost
We’ll have frost at night, and this makes it clear
that we’ll lose the grapes and all effort from last year.
It’s April, and the crops are vulnerable to hard frost.
It would be a disaster if tons of grapes would be lost.
We depend on viniculture, so we’ll have to fight
not to lose our base of life in only one night.
So we grab flashlights and matches to have some light,
and we go to the vineyards in the deep of the night.
We set straw bales on fire to get smoky fume.
The whole region looks like hell, you may assume!
But it’s the smoke that protects the fine new shoots,
so the severe frost won’t get its unmerited loots.
We keep an eye on the bales so nothing comes to grief,
and all the crops seem saved; well, it’s hard to believe!
At dawn, the air is filled with smoke but also with fun,
so the sun smiles a secret smile as a new day has begun.
Down Memory Lane
Sometimes you take a trip down memory lane.
This can be lovely, but may also bring up some pain.
Beautiful experiences come back to your mind,
and they cheer your heart as they’re one of a kind.
Precious moments that you store in your heart
you’ll never forget, even if your world falls apart.
All these wonderful moments of love and caring
make your sensitive soul really hard-wearing.
But you recall also the saddest moments of grief,
experiences of life which are hard to believe.
People won’t feel you so better do what’s best.
Just keep mum, and keep them close to your chest.
Only with friends share the bad and the good.
They aren’t grudging, and they know your mood.
So take your fascinating trip down memory lane,
and I wish you pleasure without thoughts of pain!
Terror
You look forward to the great rock concert tonight,
and a beautiful evening with your friend is in sight.
You meet him at the entrance, and you both go in.
You are in a good mood, and the show’s about to begin.
The band is brilliant and heats up the madding crowd,
but suddenly a blast, and you fall and pass out.
And then you come round; you look for you friend.
Thank God, he’s at your side, and this wasn’t the end!
Everywhere blood and panic; people are screaming,
dead, and wounded as the smell of death is streaming.
You feel all right, and you want to talk to your guy;
but he looks so strange, and you don’t get any reply.
As soon as you hug him, you realise that he expired.
And in an ocean of tears, you feel terribly tired.
A suicide bomber has executed his crimeful order
among the audience as they do it cross-border.
He created a bloodbath and innocent people died.
Religion of Peace
takes its toll; that can’t be denied.
The Old Pear Tree
Susurration in my densely leaved old pear tree.
I look up repeatedly, but there’s nothing to see.
But looked at more closely, I descry a little nest,
and a hatching blackbird mother does her best.
She looks at me timidly, with
