PROLOGUE
H arold takes Jennifer, a slender blonde woman, to the Field Museum of Natural History on their first date. They walk through the museum for hours and look at several dinosaur displays, and she gets hungry.
Can we go somewhere nice afterward and grab a bite?
she asks.
What’s wrong with eating at the food court?
he replies.
I don’t like the food court. Their food is disgusting,
she says, expressing her dislike.
Reluctant to spend additional money on her, Harold ponders what to say next without appearing cheap.
CHAPTER 1
Second Avenue Line
O n January 1, 2017, a metropolis with six million daily commuters finally has a new transit line. The Second Avenue Line, first proposed in 1929 and finally begun in 2007, has cost New York City more than four billion dollars to construct. This is a special day because Frank and Jonathan are celebrating with the governor, mayor, and transit CEO at the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Second Avenue Line ceremony.
The crowd eagerly gathers to hear the governor’s opening speech, and he thanks the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority for its dedication and unwavering determination to complete a long-awaited dream. Everyone at the crowded Ninety-Sixth Street station, from platform to upstairs token booths, listens attentively to the governor’s enthusiastic speech through the station’s PA system. The overjoyed crowd on the platform and brand-new railcars gives him a warm standing ovation. The excitement is reflected in the news, while a myriad of commuters take pictures of this historic event with their smartphones and cameras.
A year prior, Frank and Jonathan had ordered additional new railcars from Brazil specifically for the Second Avenue service. The Q trains had been chosen to service this line because these railcars are sixty feet longer than the Lexington Avenue Line railcars, the R160B series. The Second Avenue Line railcars can accommodate additional commuters and will alleviate some rush-hour congestion on the Lexington Avenue Line, only two blocks away. The new line is estimated to carry more than two hundred thousand commuters during weekdays alone, and that number that will increase exponentially over time.
The MTA hired Jonathan a year ago, and he is proud to be part of this historical milestone. He has a moment of sadness because he had hoped that Samantha would be there to share this accomplishment. Still, he can’t wait to call his brothers and share this exciting news.
CHAPTER 2
The Loop
I n downtown Chicago, the crowded streets are filled with commotion that gives the city an urban flair. In the midst of tall surrounding buildings, the elevated trains—commonly known as the L—give the city a characteristic distinct from any
