About this ebook

The sorrow we feel when we lose a loved one is the price we pay to have had them in our lives. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Falling in love makes you feel things you never knew you could feel, and so does loss. So this is the story of Sage, and what I learned in love.

In loving memory of the love of my life, Daniel Harrison Elie Grafton. You were too good for this world so you left it.

Talk to me softly, there’s something in your eyes. Don’t hang your head in sorrow and please don’t cry. I know how you feel inside I’ve been there before. Something’s changing inside you. Don’t you cry tonight, I still love you baby. - Don’t Cry, Guns N Roses 1991

    Chapter one

My name is Devon. I’m twenty five and seven years ago my life changed forever. I Learned a lot of lessons and these lessons shaped me into the person I am today.

I’m married, two kids. My daughter Alex is 3 and my son Harrison is nine weeks old. My wife is a preschool teacher and I work as a tech at a behavioral hospital.

I’m here to tell you my story but to do that, I have to tell you her story.

So this is the story of her, and what I learned in love.

Let’s throw it all the way back to 2015…

    Here we go.

Her name was Sage. She was eighteen and invincible. I swear, nothing could stop that girl. Her beautiful green eyes and black hair. Her smile that could light up an entire room, her soft voice. All of her was just overall incredible.

This story started my senior year, on a cold September morning. The day I met Sage Violett Harrison.

My alarm goes off at 7:15 and at 7:45 I start my walk to school. Most mornings go like this: I slip on some Vans, grab my bag, tell my parents goodbye and I’m out the door.

As I walked into school that particular morning I hear someone yell my name, and I turn around. It’s Lucas.

Lucas is the most popular guy in school. Him and I were pretty tight, sometimes I thought he’s the reason I didn’t get bullied. I didn’t exactly fit in, and most of the guys low key thought I’m queer.

He was with some of our friends. Jake, Olivia, and Tess.

I joined the group and Tess swallowed me in a hug. Tess was my best friend. We spent so much time together. She’s also Luca’s best friend, so the three of us hang out at her house all the time. The
