INTRODUCTION
When you are driving on your daily commute, have you ever noticed how many day cares or preschools you pass? I remember driving in a certain part of Orlando and literally seeing two to three day care centers per block. If you have children and pick them up from school, you’ve undoubtedly seen the many day care vans and minibuses in line picking up children for after-school care. So through observation, you might conclude that there’s an oversaturation of childcare centers; but you would be gravely mistaken.
According to the US Census Bureau, in 2015, there were 23.9 million children between the ages of zero and five years old.¹ During that same period, ChildCare Aware of America reported that childcare providers care for approximately eleven million children younger than the age of five per week.² This doesn’t even take into account the numbers of children needing before- and after-school care.
There is definitely a quantity need. Yet we also know there is a quality need as well. While great facilities, new vehicles, and the latest technology are all important aspects of the day care and preschool experience, there is something else that supersedes these elements and serves as the substratum for offering the best, and it’s called love. Make no mistake. Children want to know how much you care before they learn how much you know. There is no substitute for genuine, unadulterated love.
This book is for
• the man or woman who has a burning desire to make a difference for kids through opening a childcare center but has no clue where to begin; and
• the provider who’s established but struggling to be successful in enrollment, service, and profitability;
• the successful provider who already knows that, in order to stay successful, you need to be exposed to concepts and strategies that are working for others that you may not being doing so you can constantly grow and evolve.
In these pages, you will read about what works and what doesn’t work when establishing and growing a healthy, thriving childcare center. You are getting full access to the good and bad of my first childcare center and the assurance that these are not just theories but tried and tested principles that work.
There is no doubt that I believe the strategies and information in this book will propel your existing center toward success or give you, as a new establishing provider, such an advantage that growth will overtake you. There is only so much that can be covered in this book, and that is why you can visit my website daycareman.com for additional information and services that will help you realize your dream.
I was asking some children one day what were their dreams. I got all kinds of responses from wanting to be an astronaut to be being the next Michael Jordan. Then one of the kids asked me What’s your dream?
I looked in their eyes and said, My dream is to help you make your dreams come true.
I hope by writing this book I am able to help you make your
