Caught in the Killer's Sight - B. E. Serenity
Prologue
Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep… I woke up with an incredibly annoying beeping of Nick’s alarm clock in my ear. Nick. Nick! It’s time to get up.
I tried to wake him up by nudging and shaking him.
What… What time is it and its Saturday right?
He sleepishly asked me.
Babe, its Monday and we got a drug bust today. Now get your ass up!
I raised my voice a bit then I had intended as I started getting ready for work –it’s a good thing I bring extra clothes with me when stay over at Nick’s place.
He finally got and was grumbling under his breathe –I always did think it was a bit cute when he’s grumpy in the morning. We need to hurry up, the drug bust will going down in an hour and we need to also update the Captain about the plan.
I tell him I hurry to get my hair and makeup fixed.
I started walking to the doorway, when I jiggled Nick’s car keys. Oh no you’re not! I’m driving and you forgot your phone! Haha; wait a minute you’re getting a call, but I don’t recognize the number. Do you?
He asked puzzled and coming down from his comical taunting.
Nope, it’s no one. Now let’s get going before the Captain chews us out.
I say as I take my phone from him and keep the keys.
…………………………………………………….
We arrived at the Bistro Café where the Captain told us to meet him and FBI team that we were having a joint investigation with, to take point of the bust. Where the hell have you 2 been? What kind mickey mouse crud are trying to pull Michaels?
FBI Agent Jordan Garcia scolded us as her face started getting redder by the second.
Hey now, those are my best detectives and I won’t have you yelling at them! I told them what time to meet us here and they’re right on time.
Captain Michaels exclaimed while showing her who’s the boss of this case. So have you guys picked a date yet?
Not yet Cap, we’ve been too busy to think about it. And besides, we’ve only been engaged for 2 weeks.
I explain to our Captain as I show off my beautiful silver engagement ring, it had a pattern of diamond and black onyx across the top.
I knew it was the perfect ring when I saw it. Only the best for my partner.
Nick said as he kissed my cheek. Now how are we going to bust into that warehouse to take down Carlito Calamite and his Drug Cartel?
I suggest that Nick and I go in through the front door with our pistols in hand; while Captain, you and Agent Garcia bust in through the back. That way we can block them in the main part of the warehouse.
I explain my plan to them.
I’m good with the plan, now remember we all go in and we all come out.
Captain tells us as we leave the café and to the Captain’s car.
We all grab a bullet proof vest except Nick. Nick you’re going to need this, now put it on.
I order Nick as I shove the vest into his muscular chest.
Nah, I’ll be too fast for them. They get a shot at me and plus Garcia called in the Calvary. So don’t worry Sweet Cheeks, we’ll be fine and soon be married.
He assures me as we open the door to bust the drug ring.
We announced who we were and in a split second bullets started flying everywhere. We hurried to duck behind some crates for cover. Alright Carlito, this is the end of the line for you!
I yelled from behind the crates.
We started firing from all 4 corners of the room around the group. We took at least 5 of them out and left 3 standing. No one has ever pinned a case on me, my Lawyer will get the case thrown out faster than a New York minute.
He said with a smirk on his face.
Rae look out!
Cassidy screams at me as he jumps in front of me.
Nick! No!
I yell as I started aiming my gun at a possible sniper that was aiming for me.
Carilto and the last 2 remaining men bolted for the front with guns blazing as I crouch down to grab Cassidy so that I could quickly drag him behind the crates for cover. Once it was clear, I laid him down onto my lap, Stay with me Cassidy! Nick, don’t you dare die on me! You have to stay with me.
I start shouting at he smiled up at me and stroked my cheek as his body began to grow limp in my arms.
I just stared down at his angelic blue eyes, I slid my hand down from his eyes to his lips –which caused his eyes to close. I just let my tears stream down my face as mentally promised Nick that I would avenge his death.
…………………………………………………….
It was 2 days since Nick’s death and as usual I was at work, trying to track Carlito down. I felt a hand on shoulder and I looked up to see Captain Michaels beside me and looking down at me with dread in his eyes. Rae, come on its time for the funeral. I’m pretty sure Nick would want you there and you need to say goodbye.
How do you say good bye to a best friend that was your whole world?
I asked solemnly.
Chapter 1
I’ve worked on a lot of cases that would make the toughest of men to shake in terror, but not me. It’s my job to solve these cases and help find a better life while believing in happy endings, although the beginning was a horrifically tragedy. I’m the best detective Chicago PD has ever had. I am Homicide Detective Raeanne Maryemma Maya Nugent and I work for CPD –Chicago Police Department.
It was a Monday -like any other and a week before Christmas- until the Captain put two files onto my desk. I threw my long wavy golden-brunette hair into a messy ponytail before picking up the files that he put on my desk. The top one had COLD CASE stamped in red on it and the bottom one was a newer file with a square sticky note stuck on it. The sticky note read:
Female body found by a Dino’s Pub employee at 6 o’clock this morning. Crime scene already secured.
I checked my watch and it was five minutes after 6. Oh crap, I got to get going now, I thought to myself. As soon as I got my gear, jacket, and car keys; when my Captain stopped me. He was standing by my desk with a younger brown-haired, green-eyed man. The younger man looked a little edgy and scuffed up.
Captain what is this?
I asked stunned by the man standing by the Captain. I’ll have to talk to you later; I have a crime scene to get to.
Yes, I know; but I wanted you to meet your new partner. I know you’ve adapted well to working alone, since Cassidy…
He trailed off as I got ready to protest.
I don’t want a new partner; I’m fine on my own and as for Cassidy…
I trail off for a minute reminiscing on the last case I had with Cassidy. He’s dead and nothing is going to change that. Now I have to get to a crime scene.
"Well, either way he’s going with you. This is
