Heidi’S Trail - Emma Jane Goodman

    GRANDMA’S SURPRISE

U p until the time I was four years old my family treated me like I was still a baby not now.

I could do something like leaving the door open to my grandma’s old chicken coop it took the whole family to catch them chickens. Grandma got to yell’n and tell’n me to never ever go near her chicken coop again. Grandma was so mad she sounded like her chickens when they git to squarking I have never seen her this mad before. My papa told me to think of something I could do that would be nice for grandma. Well I have been thinking all week my good deed for grandma had to be something special but cheap I only get $1.00 a week for my allowance. Wala I know what to do and it won’t cost me anything after I checked on my grandma I went to find my papa. He was in his shed he is always working on something. I told papa I have a fantastic idea and that I need glue then I told him its got to be the best in the world. Papa ask me what in the world did I need the glue for I told him that it is a big suprise for grandma and I know she will love it. He told me to be careful cause if you get it on your hands it will be years before you can get it off it’s super glue. My papa told me that when I finish the good deed for my grandma he wanted to spend the rest of the afternoon with me. I ask papa what we were going to do he said it’s a surprise Heidi, I bet it won’t be as good as my grandma’s off I went with my glue as usual grandma was sleeping in her favorite chair.

Folks I looked all over the house for her teeth she loses them everywhere oh my gosh they are under her bed. My grandma could sleep through anything I took that glue and put it on her teeth then glued them in her hand. Papa said that glue is called super glue I hope so because I am saving my allowance for a new pair of boots just like my papa’s boots. I am thinking if this works I can start shopping for my red cowgirl boots. I love my grandma so much and I love doing special things for her now she will never lose her teeth again. I ran to find my papa his friends call him Tex mama said I have to call him papa or grandpa. He came walking to me with a fishing pole in his hand and he was wearing his lucky fishing hat. Papa knows I love spending time with him he tells me it is his job to teach me all of the important things I need to know about living off our land and family values. My papa took me by my hand and said come on Heidi times a waste’n. Papa has a way of saying words different my grandma said he has a blood flow problem to his head I am not sure what that means. I knew that when he took my little hand and we walked to the lake he was wrapped around my little finger, papa said the day I was born he held me in his arms and he knew then that I had that big cowboy heart of his, like I said he is wrapped around my little finger and I love him so much. I am happy I live next door to him and grandma my papa always has a big grin on his face, folks everybody he meets find him very entertaining my grandma says maybe they like his grin. Papa asked me how did my good deed for grandma turned out I told him everybody will be suprised especially my dear sweet grandma. Yeah I can start shopping for those red cowgirl boots next week when papa and I go to town.

    PAPA’S FISH’N LESSON

P apa lived near a small lake and thought it was time to teach me how to fish that day. I heard him say Miss Heidi your papa will teach you to be the best fisher woman in the county. I just looked up at him and rolled my eyes thinking he must have a screw loose or as my grandma said it’s that blood flow problem of his. I tried to tell him I am only four years old and never have I ever had to do anything as challenging before like trying to learn how to fish. Oh yeah wait a minute there was the time many many years ago when my parents thought I should learn how to use a potty chair. Folks think about this here are two adults trying to catch a two year old that can out run them, hide under the bed, and leap tall buildings. Well maybe not leap tall buildings but you get my point. They did all this to get me to sit on a pot to poop.

I’m sorry folks lets get back to the fish’n lesson. The first thing papa told me was we had to dig worms and as all four year old kids do I ask why. I do love my papa but when his answer was because fish love to eat worms I’m thinking maybe I should tell him I may
