    About the Authors

    Dedication

To God, my Father, I thank You for seeing me through everything I have been through. Thank You for enabling me to live every day beyond the expectations of what is known to be normal. Truly, your ways are higher than our ways and Your thoughts higher than our thoughts. I love You, I trust You with my life, and I choose to follow You.

To my mom, thank you for fighting for my life and never giving up on me. All my times in hospitals, you never left my bedside. There is too much to say, but in short, my life would not be the same without you, Mom. I love you and thank God for you.

To my Dad, Steve, you are a godsend into my life. You came into my life when I was an eight-year-old, sick child and became an amazing dad to me. I love you and thank God for you.

To my sister, Sally, my life would not be the same without you, dear sis. I love every minute of our life together. You light my world. I love you very much, and I thank God for you.

To my extended family, Grandpa Joseph; Grandma Dorothy; Aunties Lucy, Mary, and Isabella; Uncle Koome; all my cousins, and the many relatives and friends who have stood with me, I thank God for you all and may He bless you all.

Dr. K. Nickels and Dr. N. Wetjen, thank you for seeing me past the medical condition. Thank you for not giving up on me. By God’s grace through you, I am here and have been able to write this book.

I am a living, talking, walking miracle!

    Forward

I would like to introduce you to my friend Nate. He is 14, in 8th grade, loves to read, laugh, go to school, and spend time with his family. He’s a great kid. But that’s not what makes him special.

At the time I met Nate he was 9 years old, he had already had 14 brain surgeries and been hospitalized more times than he could count. His mother was told he wouldn’t survive. He had frequent seizures that required him to take multiple medications, making it hard for him to learn or even stay awake. He went on to have 4 more brain surgeries, was treated with a very strict diet for epilepsy for 2 years, and is still on medications. But that’s not what makes him special.

What makes Nate special is that, in spite of his trials, this child has thrived. Not just his body. Not just his mind. His spirit has thrived. I have never heard this child complain or feel sorry for himself. In all things, he expresses gratitude- for those who care for him, for his teachers, for his family, for God, for LIFE. Many teenagers struggle to find their own place in this confusing world, but not Nate. Instead of becoming sullen, or challenging authority like most teenagers, Nate has a vision for his future.

He wants to help others. He wants to share his spiritual gifts. He wants to grow to be a good person. He wants to be
