    Preface

In its most literal sense, the word ‘yoga’ means ‘union’. It is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’, meaning ‘to join’ ‘to unite’ or ‘to add’.

The term yoga is believed to have originated from the pre-Vedic Indus Valley Civilization around 3000 BCE (Samuel, 2008 (Wikipedia) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoga#History) and has been applied to a variety of practices and methods, including Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Nada Yoga, Tantric Yoga and Hatha Yoga.

Normally, our senses draw our awareness out to the external world. Yoga, however, invites our awareness to turn within. Ultimately, the aim of yoga is to become aware of both the inner and outer experiences that are occurring in any given moment.

Through my own yoga practice, I have become aware of the different parts of my being that yearn for expression and the paradox of their dichotomy. I’m serious yet fun, technical yet creative, organised yet spontaneous, powerful yet vulnerable, a lover and a fighter, a leader and a follower.

There have been times where I’ve wondered whether I could possibly dare to be it all, do it all and have it all. The path of yoga reveals that the potential contained within each human being is phenomenal. In the same way that the blueprint of a gigantic fig tree is contained within its seed, the potential for an extraordinary, fulfilling life is contained within each human birth.

This, in fact, is the essential teaching of purusartha, the ancient Vedic science of human endeavour. It states that not only is it possible to enjoy a harmonious integration of worldly success, consciousness and sensuality, but it is your dharma, your destiny, and your birthright as a human being.

By uniting all the parts of your being you will experience the life you were meant to live—one of deep connection and supreme fulfilment. This is an extraordinary journey which sharpens the mind, softens the heart and invigorates the body. It will open you to an experience of pure being and synchronicity where the fruits of ecstasy exist in abundance.

Exploring this path invites you to walk boldly and to feel the earth under your feet. An earth which is vibrant, challenging at times, but also giving, rejuvenating and nourishing. There are infinite opportunities in this life to make your dreams come true. So, I invite you to connect with your highest potential and unite with your unlimited abundance.

    Introduction

From a young age I was drawn to and fell in love with the mystique and magic of India. My father had visited India before I was born and came back with wild tales of extraordinary God-like individuals who could perform amazing miracles. These were far from children’s bedtime stories, though. He backed it up with reels of video footage showing a particular Indian god-man manifesting items from nothing. I grew up watching this footage on a regular basis and became fascinated with human potential.

My fascination of human potential eventually led me to study Psychology at University. However, I soon became disillusioned by what was offered at university and sought greater understanding by travelling to India to learn more about the extraordinary God-like individuals.

I still remember the first time I arrived - it was like coming home. There was something deeply familiar in the culture that my whole being resonated with.It wasn’t long before I found myself living in an ashram under the instruction of a living guru/God-being. The experiences, knowledge and understanding I gained from there is something that I will always cherish and be grateful for.

To this day, however, after 20 years of travel in India, I still find new experiences and another level of depth and richness that is incomparable to any other place I have been. Everything seems to be available in India.

During one particular Indian adventure, I was walking through a remote part of the Himalayas called the Zanskar Valley. It was dry and desolate, yet incredibly beautiful and majestic. Despite the dry ruggedness of the countryside, there was the occasional mountain stream that was fed by
