A New Revelation: "You are the Answer"

About this ebook
Philip’s forty year involvement in psychotherapy, first as a client, then as a student, volunteer and finally a therapist himself since 1990, leads him to see spirituality a bit differently. For him, he’s going into the same basement as the minister or priest does, but perhaps through a different door and with a somewhat different tool bag. He has in common with them though, a sense of awe at the Souls he finds there and the beauty of helping them find themselves. It’s often struck him, he says, how immeasurably deep our inner life goes and what a mystery who we really are is.
The book offers a trip through time to look over our how we developed our Spirituality and Religions and to show how we’ve been looking for answers since our very earliest days. It also gives thought to how we tried to answer our own questions, usually by setting someone else up to tell us the answers. These are deeply felt needs in us and Philip also points out how every so often, we need to create an updated story about why we are here. Perhaps it’s happening now. A New Revelation.

I can’t help the fact that I see the world a little differently. My only excuse is that I was in psychotherapy in 1970 at age 22 (courtesy of a family life where I only had a toe-hold on reality) and then got hooked and went into training in 1973. I hung around that wonderful, weird world until finally I opened my own practice in 1990 and I’m still there. These past forty years of experience naturally coloured how I see life, the unconscious world is more familiar to me than it would be for most people and many things we would take as mythical or fantasies are every so often part of my everyday life. Like the young client of who was a typical blue collar tow truck driver, except that he would get visits occasionally from his relatives, just after they had died in Portugal. Or the lady teacher I know who is also psychic and once gave me accurate information about two new clients I had not yet met (and she hadn’t either.) In any event, when I found myself thinking about Spirituality and what might be changing in our Religious expression I decided to gamble that maybe my experiences and conclusions were not so strange after all.

Introduction
Religion needs spirituality; spirituality does not need religion.
(Mike Dooley: Aka ‘The Universe’)
I wrote this book after getting a bit of a shock one day. I’d been thinking about my own spiritual journey. I’d gone into psychotherapy as a client in 1970 and begun training as a therapist myself in 1973. We’d studied Freud mostly but I always felt an affinity for Carl Jung and his willingness to look at Spirituality. I identified with him when he seemed to indicate that doing therapy was his spiritual expression, as if going to sessions or groups was like going to church. I never actually looked into the accuracy of what I’d heard he’d said but I didn’t need to. The important point was what I thought I’d heard and it spoke really strongly to me and I realized that for me as well, doing therapy work was my Spiritual Expression. I remember the wonderful groups led by my mentor Lea Hindley-Smith that almost always took on a cosmic soaring quality for me. I always ended up feeling that we were here for a reason and it was to make this world a better place than we found it. In fact, I seem to remember that Lea’s maximum compliment to anyone was to label them a Worker
which meant that’s what they had decided to do with this life, whether as a therapist or not.
What struck me the day of that shock was reflecting on the meltdown that’s occurred in many Christian and other mainstream religious expressions and how so many ‘Spiritual’ ways of searching for the meaning of life have sprung up in the West, perhaps partly to take up the slack. As I thought about them, from philosophical and religious movements like ‘New Thought’ to liberal Psychology to ‘New Age’ and the ‘Age of Aquarius,’ I suddenly noticed that what many of them seemed to have in common was an assertion, a belief that there’s no such thing as a separate God, that instead WE are God, that the entire Universe is one and
