CHAPTER 1
image006.tifLulu And Her Eye Problems
Lulu was one of Farmer Barry’s hens that just liked to be alone. She was a pretty white hen who you might notice in the above picture in the background, all alone.
In the morning when Farmer Barry opened up the hen house all of the hens would run out to eat their breakfast and go down to visit Sandy the cat, who always left a little of her breakfast for the hens to have as a treat. And every morning Sandy would ask Lilly where is Lulu?
Lulu never went down with the others and just walked around the yard, nibbling on the corn that was left over from breakfast. She just couldn’t keep up with the crowd. Sally the Worrywart worried day and night about Lulu and honestly thought there was something wrong with her. One day Sally decided to cluck out a few questions to Lulu trying to pinpoint just what happened to her and why she always wanted to be alone. As fast as Sally would cluck out her questions to Lulu, Lulu would cluck out the answers to Sally just as fast. By the end of the day Sally knew they were getting nowhere fast. Lulu really didn’t care and enjoyed clucking out answers to Sally, who in turn, just worried more and more about Lulu’s state of mind. One day Lulu and Sally were having their daily clucking session with Sally walking around trying to cluck out some point to Lulu as to why she thought she was a loner. Lulu clucked out to Sally that she was really never alone because she (Sally) was always at her side. Well
clucked out Sally, I guess I can take a hint!
and turned on her tail end and started to walk away clucking to herself about all of the precious time she had wasted trying to help Lulu. As Sally was walking away Lulu called her back and asked her how she did her disappearing act so neatly? What?
clucked out Sally, who was now really worried about Lulu’s state of mind. Yes
, said Lulu, I saw you walking away and then you just disappeared
. At this point Sally was too stressed out to answer and clucked out as loud as she could to have Farmer Barry come out and save her or Lulu or someone!!! Farmer Barry heard the commotion and came out to find out what on earth could be wrong. Sally clucked out that Lulu thought she was disappearing like a ghost and twirled her wing around her head to let Farmer Barry know that she thought Lulu had finally had lost her little hen mind.
Farmer Barry thought he had an idea and asked Lulu to take a little test. Well
, thought Lulu, this should be fun so let’s do it
. Farmer Barry told Sally to walk away slowly and told Lulu to cluck out to him when she couldn’t see her any longer. It didn’t take Lulu very long to do that because she couldn’t see Sally after five feet. Then Farmer Barry put eight eggs on the ground in a row about three feet from her and asked Lulu how many eggs there were. Lulu said four even though Sally clearly held up eight feathers so she would get the right answer. Farmer Barry had one more test to confirm his thoughts and asked Lulu to tell him what she saw just beyond the hen house. Lulu clucked out nothing
and Sally almost fainted from away.
Farmer Barry had his answer and called together all of the hens for a very important hen meeting. He explained to them that Lulu wasn’t lonely as she had Sally for a friend and that the only reason Lulu didn’t go anywhere was because she just couldn’t see anything after a little distance. She had eye problems and could only see a little ways in front of her. Of course now Sally the Worrywart had a whole new thing to worry about and clucked out to Farmer Barry that she would volunteer to be Lulu’s seeing eye hen and lead her around so she wouldn’t miss anymore fun around the farm, especially in the morning when they all went to visit Sandy. And from that day on Lulu would grab Sally’s wing feathers and off they would go with the rest of the hens to enjoy whatever the new day would bring to them. And the best part was that Sally got to worry about Lulu each and every day, which pleased her to no end. And from that day on Lulu was included in every hen adventure and never missed any more fun on the farm for ever more.
CHAPTER 2
image008.tifThe Water Game
Blackey and Pepper were busy keeping track of their little hens during the cold winter months, making sure everyone was accounted for. With snow in the forecast they knew that they wanted all of their hens near to them so they could all be together, safe and sound. Blackey counted the hens and realized that someone was missing. They hoped it wasn’t Goldilocks. They just didn’t want to hear the Goldilocks story of how she got lost in the snow and almost died from the cold one more time. They clucked out for all the hens to gather around and soon enough they realized it was Jewel who was missing. Jewel was always wandering off and they knew they had to find her before the snow started. They told the hens that they had to go and find Jewel and that they were to stay in the yard and to stay out of trouble. The hens crossed their hearts with their wings and promised to be very, very good. As soon the Blackey and Pepper were out of sight the hens looked at each other and wondered what they could do to have some
