About this ebook

I wrote these stories as the ideas came to mind, and children liked those. Thats how I got the encouragement. One college grad told me that some stories may be used in movies (he studies moviemaking). Like any writer, if the children enjoy the stories, I will consider my efforts successful.

    SHIVA - THE STORYTELLER

Once upon a time there was a famous king named Peter. He had three sons, Brian, Thomas, and Andrew. His only daughter Princess Angela was married. Brian was a mild-mannered polite gentleman, while Thomas was an excellent business manager. Andrew on the other hand, was a skilled swordsman. All three sons were well trained to take charge of the kingdom following King Peter. However, by tradition Brian being eldest was expected to be the next king.

King Peter's family ruled the kingdom for more than five hundred years. Peter was a very kind king, and loved his subjects. That's why he was incredibly popular among all people in his kingdom, who respected him very much. Bounded by sea to the east, his kingdom was quite large. King Peter was 90 years old. With his long white hair, white beard, he looked like a wise holy man. Because of his advanced age, many elderly subjects of his kingdom thought he should retire. Stout and strong he still was in good health, he told his advisors he was physically and mentally fit to rule. In real life, despite his old age he was very agile, and a skilled archer. For the past five years in a row, he was champion of the annual archery competition in his kingdom.

Children of his kingdom specially loved King Peter, because one of his favorite pastimes was to listen to children's stories. He invited storeytellers from all over his kingdom and beyond, rewarded them well for interesting stories. Whenever storytellers narrated their stories, the king invited all children around to join him. Stories on foreign lands, new discoveries, famous battles, monsters, foreign rulers, science and discoveries were his favorites. He encouraged all businessmen of his kingdom to travel abroad for trade and business, bring back new interesting stories of progress or developments elsewhere around the world.

Storytellers from his kingdom and beyond were always welcome in his court. One day a storyteller named Shiva from a distant city of his kingdom came to his court and asked for audience with the king. Court officials welcomed him, arranged for his food and rest in kingdom's guesthouse. When the king learned about Shiva the storyteller, he was happy. He immediately ordered he would listen to Shiva's stories three days later, on a Saturday afternoon.

Shiva was told by his staff to be ready with his stories coming Saturday afternoon for an audience with the king. However, Shiva already told and retold most of his exciting stories in other cities of the kingdom. So he was scared, as he did not have any new stories in stock for the coming Saturday. But he was glad to have three days time in between to think about a possible new story for King Peter. Next day, he went out wandering the capital city. Markets were busy. Shops were full
