Author

Genevieve “Genny” Aguon Arbitrario

Genevieve “Genny” Aguon Arbitrario grew up with six sisters and three brothers in the village of Merizo (Malesso) , Guam. As a young girl, she loved to read. Her favorite books were Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl and Amelia Bedelia stories by Herman Parish. She enjoyed listening to her mother sing Chamorro songs, Chamorro folktales, legends, and experiences of events during World War II. As a teenager, she kept a journal and wrote anything that came to mind. She wrote and illustrated “Carabao Joins the Liberation Day Parade” for a children’s literature course in college but never got published. She never imagined becoming an author. Instead, she became a teacher. Her passion for reading and writing followed her throughout the years. Watching her family grow from three children to seven grandchildren prompted her to write her own book, A Special Day for Grandparents. It was published in April 2013. Genny participated in the local author’s conference (Central Rappahannock Library) in Stafford, Virginia, and the Picture Book Summit/Video Conference sponsored by the Institute of Children’s Literature, Children’s Book Insider, Just Write Children’s Book, and 12 x 12 Picture Books. She is interested in writing realistic and historical fiction and nonfiction stories for children ages four to twelve years old. Genny lives in Stafford, Virginia, with her husband, three children, seven grandchildren, and her cat Ling-ling.
