    The Lost Note

I was packing for my Hawaiian vacation. But a knock at the door, a surprise note and my best friend’s crazy story would turn my vacation into an adventure of a lifetime.

I opened the door to Russ, Hey, Russ, come on in. What’s that you’ve got in your hand? I asked, noticing a kit and a little plastic bag with some paper in it.

Russ said, A burglar broke into our house last night and stole so much stuff of mine and amazing things of my mother and dad. This is evidence I found to help identify the burglars.

My mother overheard, What? Russ, your was house broken into last night? Were you home? What happened?

We went to Uncle Stephen’s for dinner. When we got home, my dad saw a broken French window pane in the den. As soon as we got in, I ran through the house, looking everywhere. We found some drawers open and saw Mother’s jewelry box lying on the stair landing. The dogs were shut up in the bathroom.

I’m so sorry, Mother said. Are you okay?

Yes, Ma’am, we’re okay, but those burglars got away with 200 Limoges boxes, silverware and miniature pictures. My daddy said it looked like they knew exactly what they wanted because they went right after the valuable stuff. Then he called the police. Oh, and this silver dollar collection I had and all my baseball card collection my dad has saved for 40 years—gone and lots more.

Is your mother home now? I’m going to call her. Mom picked up her phone, and walked out of the room.

Russ opened the bag he brought. Inside I saw a container of powder, some tape and a small brush.

    What’s that? I asked.

Jay, I have something important here. He handed me a piece of cardboard and continued, I didn’t tell my folks, because I think I can solve this case. Look, I’ve got fingerprints from the burglars.

Didn’t the police come and search for fingerprints? I questioned.

Not really. They came and looked around. They said they have burglaries every day and it’s hard to track them all, but these guys are getting a reputation. They’re called the ‘Tiptoe Burglars’, because they’ve been burglarizing lots of houses in Memphis. They always enter by cutting a small window glass in the door and putting their hand thru and opening it or smashing a window and crawling through, Russ explained, so it may be a signature for them. They’re very careful, clean and thorough, even when the people are home sometimes. It seems they only steal small valuables, like those antique boxes, jewelry, silver, cash, credit cards and fine art.

Russ, so what can we do with only a fingerprint?

Not only a fingerprint, but look what I found behind a broken trellis, he continued.

    A plastic bag? I queried.

This, Russ said, as he handed me a little wad of paper he retrieved from the plastic bag.

    Some old scrap paper.

Not any old scrap paper. Look what’s written on it, Russ said.

I took the paper from Russ. Even though it was a little smeared, I read aloud, Delta Airline, Flight 948—9:50 A.M.—3/18. I can’t believe this. That’s my flight. I know you, Russ, you’re making this up. You wrote this.. Why, you little..

Shaking his head, Russ denied it, I swear it, Jay. I found it this morning. It’s been in the rain and dog poop outside last night, but I bet the burglars are going to be on the airplane with you. If they are, we need to have a plan.

It was weird, but possible, and where else could he get a schedule like that? I thought.

    What’s your plan? I asked.

I think I have an assignment for you—top secret, while you’re on your trip.

Sure, Russ. Russ always has some scheme to get me in trouble and most of the time we do.

If you get any information, call me and I’ll call the police here. We’ll get the Hawaiian police and our Memphis police to get those thugs arrested. I want my things back, Russ said.

I’ll keep the airline schedule and the fingerprint. I’ve got your number, but I don’t know if they’re really going to Hawaii, I said.

Jay, I’m convinced. Don’t let me down, Russ said, I gotta go. Let’s get ’em.

Bye, Russ, I said. Sometimes, Russ made up stories, with his wild imagination, but maybe he really had found the note and the fingerprints. The Tiptoe Burglars and I might meet in Hawaii. Soon my thoughts turned to Hawaii and all the fun I would have.

Dinner’s ready, I heard my mother calling.
