FOREWORD
M y name is Holly Willis and I am a certified and licensed pediatric speech language pathologist. While I work with a variety of disorders, I specialize in feeding disorders. I have worked closely with Laura Kopec for a number of years, personally and professionally. She has not only improved the quality of my life with nutritional counseling, but also the lives of many others. I have been impressed with her background, knowledge, and flexibility to meet people where they are in their journey to improved health.
I am also a mother of a child who has always been a bit of a picky eater. So, I can’t tell you how eager I was to read My Kid’s a Picky Eater. I was looking forward to some great ideas for parents like me, and I was not disappointed. This book is loaded with helpful information to encourage parents and motivate children of all ages to break out of their poor eating habits in a very positive way.
It is one thing to know that your child is not eating enough of a variety that would be considered a well-balanced diet. It is an entirely different beast to know what to do about it. For many parents, it is easier to take the road of least resistance and just give them what you know they will eat. It may be chicken nuggets at every meal, but they have to eat something or they’ll starve, right? Then what do you do when they get sick of eating that one food item because that’s all they will eat? Laura clearly understands that we as parents can’t simply reason with our children and tell them what is good for them and they will just eat it because we said so. I wish it was that easy, but unfortunately it is not. Those little people have minds of their own!
While Laura does not claim to have the cure for picky eating, she has given the reader a great place to start their journey in an attempt to increase their child’s willingness to try new foods. A well-balanced diet with a variety of foods is extremely important for your child’s overall cognitive, physical and emotional development. Let this book assist you in helping your child become a better version of themselves.
Holly Willis, M.S., CCC-SLP
