About the Authors
Foreward
It is my distinct pleasure and privilege to write the foreward to this book by my patient Mr. Chuck Rudolph. The manuscript is a firsthand accounting of a patient’s and his family’s physical, emotional and spiritual journey through the diagnosis and multiple therapies for malignant melanoma. The story of the Rudolph’s life with cancer is a story of empowerment, humanity, family and faith. In my profession, we tend to so focus on the active medical issues at hand that we frequently only catch a glimpse of the life stories of our patients whom we struggle to save. I remember when I first read this book, I was overwhelmed by the emotional and spiritual depth of events that I myself was involved in, and was only minimally aware. Through every PET scan, every treatment, every procedure, and every bad report, the Rudolph’s found strength to keep forging ahead. The day-by-day accounting and the prayer list updates say it all. From the depths of despair to the heights of elation, the Rudolph’s journey through cancer is a testament to the human spirit. A beautiful story about an impossible, life changing event. I am honored to have been the Rudolph’s doctor, and am a better person for having read their story.
Dr. Svetomir Markovic, Oncologist, Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN)
This book is dedicated to my grandchildren: Luke, Ema, Tessa, Ellie, and any others who may come along.
You are the apples of my eye; and add brightness to my day each time I think of you.
There are so many people to thank that I am sure I will miss some if not many who are deserving of so much gratitude from us.
Evelyn, who for many years has been in my eyes the perfect example of the Godly woman in Proverbs 31. And who has stood with me on this long and painful (for both of us) journey. I believe you are the most courageous woman I have known.
Our children, Meloni, Aaron, and Amy: who have had to watch their father go through this trial. And wonder if we have had our last breakfasts together.
Aaron’s wife Astrida, and Amy’s husband Dan.
Bill and Kathy (my sister) and Jim and Sylvia (Evelyn’s sister), who, living so close have carried such a load for us. From mowing to snow plowing to hauling us back and forth to Mayo Clinic to hundreds of other things you have done; we could not have gotten through this without your help.
Our Sunday School class: who let me teach whenever I was able, even though sometimes I was so weak I had to sit rather than stand. You know I love to teach, and getting ready for Sunday was very therapeutic for me.
Our niece, Norma: who being a Doctor of Nursing, helped in so many ways.
The 2nd Half class at Grace Chapel who continued so close to us, even after we moved to Minnesota; I look forward to sharing the stories in heaven of what all your cards, letters and prayers meant to us.
So many of our friends and siblings who helped with meals or took us back and forth to Rochester for the radiation cycles or other things: The physical rest I received while riding rather than driving was more important than we will ever know.
Dr. Markovic, our oncologist, who always had a next step and was so positive in outlook: We have grown to appreciate him so. He also made suggestions on this book, especially the medical language.
Dr. Ben Kipp, our nephew, who was always available to help me understand what was happening in a more complete way and from a different perspective.
Bob (Evelyn’s brother) and Linda: for letting us stay in your home with you so often.
All the nurses and other medical personnel
