    Preface

My daddy has so many books and magazines including my past class books in his library, on the top of each magazine are written a warning; "You are warned never to remove this magazine from the library". I was really afraid to touch the magazines, each time I drew nearer them; the fear of that warning broke my nerves. The red and cream colour design however was very attractive; I liked it and wanted by all means to open them.

One day, I extended my hands in confidence to see the content. I drew one of the magazines forcefully because its position in the shelve was a bit difficult for my height as a teenager, the books on that row fell on me and my fear multiplied, I picked them up and climbed the reading table to re-park them. My curiosity kept me tap tapping on the books. I settled down with the magazine, first I realized they had been sent to Dad from Britain; with the title "The Psychologist Magazine" 1967, they were actually far older than me. On the front cover was written the highlights in red coloured fonts.

The contents among others were, how to use mnemonics, how to overcome worry and overcoming lack of constancy of purpose. When I opened the first page I saw great quotes from great minds for the first time in my life that really thrilled me. What surprised me was that Dad did not ask me who scattered the shelve. So I continued going back to the magazine; one other day I picked another one and discovered the principle of self reliance that taught me to do everything within my powers in any circumstance and only ask for help when I have done all I know how to do.

I later forgot most of the things I read in this magazine but two things I never forgot were self reliance and mnemonics. I began to apply mnemonics in integrated science study and few other subjects following the example of functions of money shown by the psychologist columnist. I also adapted to the principle of self reliance which almost took my life because I did not know exactly what it meant at that time; so when I was sick I do not relate it to my parents until they notice an unusual dullness and in the year 1996, Appendices testis’ nearly brought my life to an end because I kept the pain to myself.

In the year 2011, my little cousin Christabel began to act in a very unstable manner; she would never stay at a place each time she entered my room, I was upset at the rate with which she scattered my books. One day I looked at her sweating; all because of her purposeless and tireless labour of scattering and I smiled in my heart, a word hit me ‘childishness’, and my mind began question; why can’t this child just stay at one point? Why? Why?

I had brought this magazine to Lagos the last time I travelled to my state Anambra. One Sunday morning; I stumbled into it and my eye caught; ‘overcoming lack of constancy of purpose’, and I began to dig deeper into the content of the few volume, to my amazement, my mind began to find answers to a lot of reasons why people are very unstable in their pursuit.

I could not give up on the impress of the findings driving me to write on the topic with the aim of helping people worldwide. The moment I recaptured my childhood dream of becoming a writer and related it to what the spirit of the Lord told me in the month of February, 2010 that, I will make you great through a pen. I now remembered how many books I had tried to write but stopped at the introduction or sometimes first chapter including stories. There was a strange passion that took sleep away from me and propelled me to pursue this book, consistency of purpose.

    Introduction

    The little Christabel

The little Christabel is about my little cousin whose acts inspired me. She is about two and half years old.

When I watch her confined to a room without supervision, she goes from one activity to the other; she open books, tore them, opens olive oil, pours it on the rug, pushes down the chair, drives it, and turns down the reading table. She talks to the books and sometimes flogs the books. When I step in and warn her not to scatter my books, she says things in response that amaze me, such as, Brother, I love you.

I discovered that she cannot continue at anything for a long time, and this gave me the definition of a childish inconsistency of purpose.

As I observed little Christabel, I discovered lack of purpose, focus, decision-making ability, thoroughness, self-control, and time consciousness.

In my quest of her and people’s inconsistencies, I recalled the psychologist magazine I read. I dogged deeper into the column titled overcoming lack of constancy of purpose. I went further into findings. I found these timeless principles of consistency that I shall be sharing with you in this book. I discovered this common factor in some successful and influential people in all walks of life. Men like Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, and Nelson Mandela demonstrated that the principles I am about to
