A native of Welsh, Louisiana, Coys grew up during the desegregation years in the South. He is a graduate of Welsh High School. He was ordained as a minister on November 18, 1990, and ordained as an associate pastor in Beaumont, Texas, on February 18, 2002. He resides in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with his wife, Beatrice, and sons, Brandon and Dominique.
