The Godlike Principle - Barrie Heffner

    PROLOGUE

My name is Jack Cunningham. In August 1955, my wife Leslie and I were blessed with a little girl whom we named Karen. Everything was normal with the exception of a birthmark on her left arm. The story I’m about to tell you will probably leave you speechless. Most people would tell you this is not possible. There are times that my wife and I still don’t believe what happened, and it is still going on today. This story is about our daughter Karen and a special unbelievable gift that she has. Sit back and read about a situation you in all likelihood will never hear of or see again.

    CHAPTER 1

    The Beginning

On August 2, 1955, Leslie Cunningham and I were all aglow with the birth of our daughter Karen. The little girl came into this world about 5:12 a.m. The birth was normal with the exception of a very large reddish purple birthmark on her left arm. The doctors assured us that this would not be cause for any concern.

One day when Karen was about five years old, she was playing in the living room. Her mom came in to get her for lunch when she noticed her left arm. There was no mark left on her arm. She was quite alarmed when looking at the arm she saw nothing. She quickly called me as well as our doctor.

Later that afternoon, Leslie brought Karen into Dr. Osborn’s office. He quickly checked out Karen, looking at her arm. When he could not find anything out of the ordinary, he told Leslie, he wanted to x-ray her arm. The next morning after the x-ray, she again was in Dr. Osborn’s office. He looked at Leslie and said, I can’t find anything wrong. I have no answer for your questions. I asked several of my colleagues to look at all the results, and they have no answers. My suggestion to you is move on. There is nothing wrong. We can’t tell you anything more.

Fast forward to 1965. Karen was playing out in the yard with Lucy Blacken. They ran back and forth between the sliding board, the swings, and the monkey bars. Karen slipped off the top of the monkey bars, hitting the side of the bars and landing awkwardly on her left leg. When Leslie heard her scream, she came running out to find Karen with a compound fracture of the leg. She could see the bone sticking out of the leg. She quickly ran back into the house and called the ambulance company. They were there in approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. Leslie had covered Karen up and was trying to comfort the crying young girl. When the ambulance crew arrived on the scene, they checked the girl. The ambulance attendant looked at Leslie and said, Ma’am, she is bruised up pretty bad, but other than that, she doesn’t appear to be hurt. We will transport her to the hospital to be checked out, but I believe she is going to be all right.

Leslie quickly grabbed Karen’s leg. There was nothing wrong. She shook her head and started mumbling. She called me and I tried to calm her down, with no success. She looked at me and said, I want to talk to Dr. Osborn. Later, we were in his office. She explained what she saw when first getting to Karen. Dr. Osborn asked her, if she could be wrong? Leslie literally screamed at the doctor. She yelled, I am not crazy. This girl’s leg was broken when I got to her. The bone was sticking out of her leg. Dr. Osborn told Leslie, This is the second time I have to tell you that I have no answers for you. Your daughter is OK.

When Karen was a junior in high school, she was the leading scorer on the field hockey team. In the next to the last game of the season, a player on the opposing team took a shot late in the first half of the game. The shot rose off the player’s stick and caught Karen on the side of the forehead. The shot opened a large gash on her head. The umpire quickly stopped the game and summoned her coach immediately. When the coach and the first aid personnel got to her, they placed a towel with pressure against the cut. The towel quickly became soaked with blood. She was immediately transported by ambulance to the hospital. On the way to hospital, the attendant picked up the towel to look to the cut. To her complete amazement, there was no cut on Karen’s head. She kept looking at her head, then to the blood-soaked towel, and back to her head. She was stunned.

Leslie and I met the ambulance at the hospital. The attendant asked us to wait for just a minute as they wheeled Karen in. The attendant told her story to both of us. Leslie looked at me. We must be crazy. I’ve got to talk to Dr. Osborn, or I’m going to go nuts.

Dr. Osborn again consulted several of his colleagues about what had transpired. Nobody could provide answers. They were simply mystified by these turn of events. Leslie started to check news articles and made phone calls to every medical professional she could. Most people dismissed her as either crazy or just an overzealous mother, who didn’t have their facts together.

Rowland Green was a research biologist in Atlanta Georgia. He always was reading news articles and looking at TV reports and documentaries on medical issues and unusual circumstances. To put it mildly, he was one of those guys who was always fascinated and looking for answers to the strange, unanswered situations. One day, he came across an article about this mother in Racine Wisconsin who couldn’t get any answers to unusual happenings with her daughter. The more he read, the more interested he became. He called a private investigator in Wisconsin to dig up info quietly about this family, concentrating on the daughter and unusual circumstances.

About forty days later, Rowland had a very interesting set of facts about this young girl, who seemed to beat all medical issues that came her way. He had no idea at the time, what kind of impact this little info venture would have on his life. He kept a very low profile about this find as not to offend or scare off anyone. He also had the investigator let him know if there were any more developments involving this girl.

Leslie was becoming more paranoid about facts about our daughter and if it would attract attention. She knew the usual number of people such as medical personnel, coaches, and teachers knew a little something about Karen, but no one appeared to be that interested in the strange circumstances. She was determined to keep it that way.

Two years later, Karen was a freshman at the University of Wisconsin majoring in Health Care Management. Karen knew that something special was happening with her and that led to a concern about other people. Her mother was concerned about information about Karen’s unusual healings would get out, but Karen was determined to be in a position to help people. She also had the unbelievable luck of having been set up for life by me. I had made a killing in real estate in California and Florida along with some additional very lucrative investments in the stock market. As a result, Karen had a portfolio that was worth about twenty-five million dollars.

During her senior year in college, Karen, and about seven of her friends, went camping to a state park in the spring. It was a way to get away from the grind, especially with finals coming up. They also had the very realization that their time together in school was about to come to an end. The second day they were out, the group decided to go on a hike on the trails. There were numerous warning signs that some very sheer cliffs and outcroppings were along the trails. The state had made sure that there was plenty of warning. Karen and Louise Grimes decided a little later during a break to explore a little more. Louise not the outdoorsy type stumbled about a hundred meters up the trail and took what appeared to be a fatal plunge down the hillside, bouncing off several rocks and boulders. Karen screamed so loud that the rest of the group knew almost immediately what had happened. Karen, who was the true outdoor girl, was almost two-thirds the way down the hillside before the group got to the point where the fall occurred. One of the group members already had run back to the car. She drove five miles back into town to get help. Help was on the way back to the trail point within minutes.

Karen arrived where Louise was lying. She saw a woman who looked completely broken. Louise, who was unbelievably still conscious, was pleading with Karen for help. Karen saw multiple injuries. She applied pressure to two cuts on Louise’s head. She then just held onto Louise until the paramedics arrived on the scene. When they arrived on the scene, they had Karen move off to the side as they attended Louise. After about ten minutes, they called to the surface to send the basket down. The paramedics told the people on the surface that she is covered with a tremendous amount of bruises, but appears to be otherwise unhurt. The surface personnel questioned them. Are you sure? they asked. They again repeated that she appears to be OK, but they will check her out when they get her to the hospital.

Louise looked at Karen and asked, How can that be, I hurt so badly when I came to a stop? Karen said, I know. I thought you would be dead before I got to you. When I did, you looked so bad, so hurt. I don’t know what’s going on here. Louise said, Thank you for your help. Karen said, I didn’t do anything. I just held you. Louise said, Exactly, I believe you helped me. I don’t know how, but I felt so much better in your arms.

After they got Louise up and on the way to the hospital, Karen sat down and just broke down. She was beginning to develop a thought about herself. She was both curious and scared at the same time. She thought about talking to her mother but decided that might cause more problems than it was worth. She decided to talk to Dr. Osborn when she got home.

    CHAPTER 2

    Karen Makes a Tremendous Decision

After graduation, Karen came back to Racine before starting her new job. She had a private meeting with Dr. Osborn, as was her plan. She went over the whole ordeal that happened with Louise.

Dr. Osborn was almost shaken by the tale that Karen told him. He sat back in his chair and said, Karen, if what you tell me is true, and I do believe you, you might, just might have one of the greatest gifts in the history of all mankind. Have you thought of what you might do? If you do, please don’t tell me. In that way, you might be safer. My suggestion is do whatever you want with this, but be careful, because there are literally thousands maybe many more that would exploit you even if it meant danger to you. And one more thing, Karen, rest assured that this conversation will stay between us. Karen thanked Dr. Osborn and left his office.

Twenty days later, Karen started her job as assistant hospital administrator at Aurora Sinai Hospital. She was well received by the entire staff of the hospital. Karen quickly learned her craft. She was extremely talented within her occupation. She had contact with patients and their families.

Approximately three months into her new job, Karen came across the case of a thirty-eight-year-old mother of five young children. As assistant administrator, she talked with families about a wide range of issues. She became extremely knowledgeable about Nora Strong’s case. This woman was very ill with pancreatic cancer. She had all the treatments that were possible. The oncologist had given her no more than six months to live. Now she was brought in with continuing worsening conditions. Karen made it her point to see the family. She offered them all the help they needed. The entire family thanked her. Nora Strong told Karen, How can we ever thank you for your kindness? Karen said, You already have, but I’ll take a big hug as payment. Karen gave Nora big long hug and said, Please get some rest. I’ll see you in the morning. The next morning, Karen made a point to see Nora and her family at about 10:00 a.m. after the doctors had made their rounds. Nora told Karen she was feeling a lot better. Well, Karen said, that hug must have done some good.

Later in the morning, the oncologist came in to do his normal rounds. As he came into Nora’s room, he said, Hello, gal, how are we feeling today? Nora said, Doctor, I actually feel much better. Thank you. He was impressed with her demeanor. He checked her, like he would normally do. He went to her chart to review her tests and had this crazy look on his face. He told Nora, I’ll be back in a few minutes. He immediately went to the RN in charge and said, Mary, can I speak to you in private?

Mary Black said, What could I do for you, Doctor? Dr. Simpson asked her if she drew the blood for Nora’s test. She said, No, Doctor, but I happened to be in the room when the phlebotomist drew her blood.

Mary asked Dr. Simpson, Is there a problem?

Dr. Simpson said, Something doesn’t make sense here. Excuse me, I’ll be right back. He looked back at Mary and said, I’ll explain in a little bit. Mary had a puzzled look. Dr. Simpson rushed down to the lab. There he met Josh Young, the director of the lab. He said, Josh, who drew the blood this morning for Nora Strong? He said, Jillian Love pulled the blood for her this morning. Jillian, who was standing close by, said, Doctor, is there a problem? He said, Jillian, just answer one question for me. Is there any chance that there was a mistake made involving Nora Strong’s blood? Jillian was slightly taken back and said, I don’t think so, Doctor, with our procedures. Nothing is ever perfect. It could be possible, but I don’t think so.

Dr. Simpson said, Jillian, I don’t think either that you made a mistake, but will you do me a favor? Go draw another blood sample from Nora Strong and come back here and run her tests again. Please call me when the results are in. Jillian said, Right away, Doctor.

Ninety minutes later, Jillian Love brought the results to Dr. Simpson. He said, Thank you to Jillian and rushed back to the floor where Nora Strong was. He looked for Mary Black and said, Come with me for a minute. Mary followed him into a vacant office where Mark Simpson asked her to look at this lab result. Mary, who was regarded as one of the best if not the best nurse in the hospital, looked over the lab results. She looked at Dr. Simpson and said, What’s the issue with these results? This person is completely healthy. Mark Simpson looked at Mary and said, I was praying that you would say that. I was beginning to believe I was nuts.

Now Mary looked confused. Dr. Simpson looked at Mary and said, This is Nora Strong’s blood work. Mary took several steps back and said, Something is wrong here. This can’t be right. I thought the same thing, so I had lab run the tests again. I’m going to have Dr. Peterson look over the case just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Do you think this is possible? Mary said, I can’t believe this. Is it possible that she is OK? Dr. Simpson said, I don’t know, but it kind of looks that way. Mark Simpson just shook his head, while Mary said, Oh my god! Mark said, Mary, don’t say anything about this until we are sure. Mary was now crying softly. Mark was leaving the office and said, Mary, compose yourself before you leave this office.

Dr. Joel Peterson confirmed the test results. He was as astounded as Mark Simpson. They along with Mary Black prepared to meet with Nora and Jim Strong. The Strongs had no idea what was about to happen. When they came into the room, the Strongs were terrified. Mark Simpson began by saying, Remember yesterday, when I left your room. Nora nodded and said, I didn’t know what was going on. Well, Mark said, your latest test results showed no problems. That’s why we did additional blood work. That’s why I had Dr. Peterson come in to verify what I’m about to tell you. Nora, Jim, your tests reveal that there is nothing wrong with you. You do not have any signs of cancer or anything else for that matter. You, my dear, are healthier than most of us. And no, I have no way to explain it. Absolutely none. Congratulations, we would like to watch you for at least one more day, but you should be able to go home soon, very soon. As they shook Nora’s hand, Jim was hugging his wife and crying almost uncontrollably.

Obviously, Karen heard about this miraculous turn of events. Now she was just about sure that she had some kind of power that no one could explain. She thought about this for minute, and a twinge of fear actually came across her. Although I may be able to help people, I’m going to have to be very careful about when and how I do this. People would kill for the ability to help loved ones, especially children. She knew she gave Nora a hug, but what she didn’t know is how much contact it would take, if this were true, to help people. She thought it might be worth giving it a try
