Sofia Abbasi
13-year old author, Sofia Abbasi, has fostered a passion for writing for many years. Life of a Teenage Demi-God is the first book in a fantasy fiction book trilogy. The unwavering young author learned at a very young age that perseverance and confidence fuel success over any adversity; Sofia has struggled all her life with severe eczema, asthma, and multiple food allergies, which made having a normal childhood and “fitting in” very difficult. Growing up can be a difficult experience for any child or teenager, but being covered in open eczema abrasions and wounds, or not being able to indulge in a towering, dripping ice cream cone with her friends due to allergies did not make the process any easier. It has been the support of her family, belief in her character, intelligence over the superficial, and focus on her writings that helped her excel past her impediments. A dedicated honor student, Sofia is beginning high school enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program, an advanced placement system. Sofia’s hobbies outside of reading and writing involve expressing her creativity via hands-on outlets, such as partaking in her school’s robotics club, performing on the violin, playing soccer, and deep sea snorkeling with her family, despite her constant battles with physical ailments. Sofia writes in hopes to epitomize the adage, “Do not judge a book by its cover.”

The Packet

S o, uh, this is weird, my mom and dad told me I have to start doing this log thing without telling me the reason why. And, uh, I guess that’s it. Today was the last full day of eighth grade, so we didn’t do anything. Yeah, so, uh, bye, I guess.

Go pack,
my mom told me as I walked through the door.
Okay, but where are we going?
You’ll find out when we get there.
Confused, I walked into my sister’s room.
Hey, Zainab, do you know where we’re going?
I asked her.
Yes,
she replied.
Are you going to tell me?
No.
Sighing deeply, I ran out of the room to get my suitcase ready.
***
Miami? Why didn’t you tell me?
I said as I watched the welcome sign pass by the car window. I glanced over to my parents, who exchanged nervous glances.
Sofia, there is something you should know.
I realized my dad was staring at me strangely. Have you ever realized that—
he paused like he was trying to find the right words. You, you’re special.
Oh, thanks, Dad,
I replied sarcastically.
No, not like that. I mean, you’re different.
Yeah, Dad, I know that. Not that hard to figure out.
This is more complicated than the normal feelings of being different people have at your age.
Azar, just let her see the hotel; it should explain everything,
my mom said to him.
What hotel?
Just then the car pulled up toward the hotel, and I gave it a good look. It was pretty strange that something this big didn’t seem to be noticed by anyone on the street. Even with the large letters made of fire, no one noticed? It was as if everyone seemed to just ignore it. No strange glances and no one stopping to get a closer look. My parents and sister said good-bye to me and left me there, obviously aware of the fact that I was still in shock.
I walked inside; there was nothing better for me to do anyway. The worst part? Almost all my friends from school were there.
Uh, am I missing something here?
I asked.
Kind of,
Leo said.

Wow … it’s been awhile. But I wanted to write in my journal again because I’m turning eighteen today! Why the random and bizarre log entry, you might ask? Well, I had a weird vision. Something I have the need to record.
I was at my parents’ house lying on the couch and watching TV.
Sofia, you need to stay here and take care of the kids. We’re needed at the station,
my mom demanded before she, her friend, and my sister left me alone with the younger children.
I rolled my eyes and flipped through the channels. Typical, I thought, this always happens. My mom’s friend’s kids started to cry. (They were twins.) I picked them up and sat them in their beds. It was as if the kids had sensed it coming; the door flew open.
Alex.
I wasn’t scared. I’d fought him a bunch of times before, and I’d won, might I add. All this for revenge?
I asked.
Oh poor, poor clueless Sofia. They didn’t tell you, did they? The twins aren’t as normal as you believe they are,
he said.
What?
I replied. I was starting to get a bit angry; why wouldn’t they tell me something important about the twins? I was supposed to know everything about my godkids, wasn’t I?
He chuckled. The less you know, the better.
He walked closer to me, his eyes locking with mine, revealing his hatred and anger. All I need you to do is hand over the twins and this’ll be over before you know it.
I took a deep breath, bringing a piece of smooth wood out of my pocket and pointing it at him. His cocky smile faltered, but only for a second. Sorry, Alex, but your cliché villain lines don’t work on me.
Fine, it’s your call anyway.
That’s when I realized something was off, and it all went downhill from there. The last thing I saw was a red light, and I woke up screaming.
Sofia, come on. Mom’s waiting for us.
Uh-oh,

Fourteen Years Later

Yay! It’s my birthday, and day one of my log. That’s about it; I guess I could also say that there are days that I just want to rip someone’s head off and then roll into a ball and cry like a baby. I guess I feel like that almost every day.
Hey, I’m going to leave you guys here. My mom’s calling me.
Weird, I got this ominous box. What’s this?

I had the strangest day today. Bonnie, who had mysteriously disappeared the day before, came up to me today. Hey, Sofia, sorry for leaving with such short notice yesterday.
Oh that’s fine; I understand you were probably a little freaked out. I wouldn’t blame you; heck, I was terrified. You know how my family is with their practical jokes.
That’s what my parents told me to say when strange things happened.
Yeah, sure,
she replied under her breath. Hey, Sofie, I got to tell you something.
All right, tell me.
She started to mutter, Rip it off like a bandage; rip it off like a bandage.
Then she said, loud and clear, Well, I’m your half-sister!
Wait, what?!
"I’m the daughter of Jupiter, and you’re the daughter of Zeus, you know, Romans versus Greeks."
Whoa! My best friend of three years is actually my sister. I guess life really is a box of chocolates: a big messed up box of chocolates, like the store brand chocolates that taste really bad. Oh … don’t Romans and Greeks hate each other?
And doesn’t that mean you’re a demigod? I thought. I decided to leave that part out, you know, ignore the obvious.
Not exactly, I mean—
Sofia and Bonnie.
My teacher called us over to her desk. They want you at the front desk for early dismissal.
What? We just got here—not that I don’t want to go or anything.
That’s when I realized she had called Bonnie’s name too. Wait why are you coming with me?
I asked Bonnie
You’ll find out when we get there.
We left the classroom to go to the office.
