A Time for Memories 2 - Lyn Burgess

    FEELINGS

Well, let's face it. As we found out in my last book, not all memories are warm, sentimental ones. We have other sorts, such as being scared, puzzled, lonely, frightened, startled, on edge, worried, possessive, hurt, sly, jealous, spiteful, coy, angry, hopeless, tearful, helpless, loving, or when those little hairs on the back of your neck stand up there's a shiver down your spine but you're not sure why.

Then on the other end of the spectrum, we have memories of wonder, awe, happiness, pleasure, or nice ones when those hairs on the back of the neck are tingling with excitement and puzzled pleasure. There's also that feeling that you're not sure about, the one that just seems to haunt you until something happens to pinpoint which, if any, of those feelings you're having.

    CHAPTER ONE

We rejoin the Rook-Leighs two years after we left them.

Derek, almost fully fit, had been back on duty for almost two months. He's still with the army but not in combat, although not just for health reasons; he had also been promoted. Before going back, he knew it would mean office work with the boredom that often ran with it.

When Derek told Rosy, the beautiful Rosy joked, 'Boring, sweetheart. Don't talk too soon.' She turned to look at him, laughing, meaning it as a joke.

What was to come? No one was ready for it, least of all them. They thought maybe naively that they had had the scare of their lives. They didn't know fate very well and the nasty tricks it could have up its sleeves.

Derek went over to Rosy, putting his hands on her shoulders and saying, 'Oh, you don't think I can do boring, my wonderful little nymph?' He started to tickle her.

What he hadn't told her was that he was to become one of two who will be looking for a spy or maybe more than one. When he had been well enough, his immediate superior had visited him. His name was Gerald Bream. They talked a lot about the mission and why it had gone so wrong. That was when they came to the conclusion that there must be a spy---maybe more than one, they thought. With his high-security clearance, he was in a position above most of the men.

The decision to do this was his, with the permission and blessing of Gerald. They had arrived at the conclusion that the spy was near the top. Then they had concluded that it could only be either someone in his crew or one of the ten people in the office or that maybe someone leaked it. No one else was to know about it. That was why he hadn't told Gil, and he felt awful for. It was for the best; it was supposed to make his job easier the fewer people who knew.

Right now, he was just enjoying being with Rosy, laughing so much they collapsed into a heap on the floor. That was the closest they had been since before he went away when they were at the little country inn they had found. Derek just couldn't manage it. They had tried a couple of times, then they gave up trying as it would upset him too much; he felt he was letting her down.

Rosy realised it was starting to come between them. After thinking about it, an answer came to her. Rosy invited Susan and Gil with their baby, Lindsey-Rose, down for a couple of days.

When Rosy told Derek, he replied, 'Oh, that's fantastic. They will have a great time.'

A few hours after they arrived, while Rosy and Susan were cooking the evening meal that night, Susan asked if they could take the twins for a couple of days; it was to give them a bit of together time before Derek went back to work.

'Oh, Susan, that would be lovely. Are you sure you will be able to manage three babies?'

'Yes, after you tell me about the problems you and Derek are having in trying to get back to being an active couple in bed.'

Rosy blushed. 'In bed, Susan, I'm not sure how many times we actually made love in a bed. I do know it's a lot less than elsewhere. We never seem to make it to the bed.' They laughed together. 'Just one thing, Susan. Please, may we pretend it's your idea?'

'Well, it is, my dear friend.'

'Yes, of course. I mean, I don't want to pressure Derek into thinking I planned it to make him perform. That wouldn't be fair,' Rosy said.

'That's fine, honey. It's our little secret.'

'Seriously, how will you manage, Susan?'

'Well, it just so happens that my Gil has a week off.'

'Oh, Susan, you are awful. Poor bloke. What is he going to say?'

Susan replied, 'Nothing, my dear Rosy. It was somewhat his idea.' They giggled. 'I think Derek has spoken to Gil about what you spoke to me about.'

They joining the men to have their evening meal. While they were eating, Susan said, 'Gil has something to ask you both.'

After Gil asked, at first, they all thought Derek was going to say no as he was silent for so long.

'Well, honey, what do you think?' Rosy asked him tentatively.

'How do you feel about it, Rosy?'

'I'm OK with it. It means we will be free to do a couple of trips out on our own, Derek.' Saying that made her feel more comfortable. Rosy knew that would work.

After all arrangements were made, they finished their meal.

    CHAPTER TWO

The next day, the girls went to the village, leaving the children with the men, to stock up on a few bits for a picnic. Walking along the lane, they were talking.

Rosy asked Susan, 'Do you and Gil still want to get Lindsey a puppy?'

'Oh yes, Rosy, we just haven't found one yet. Why do you ask?'

'Well, I have a secret---the other reason I asked you down.'

'What are you not telling me?' Susan laughed.

Rosy's dog, Zanda, suddenly barked from beside Susan.

'Where did you come from, lad?' Rosy stroked his head, saying, 'Well, boy, shall we tell her, or shall we show her?'

With that, Zanda barked a few times, then ran off to a garden gate ahead of them. When the girls caught up with him, he was just sitting, whining.

    'Rosy, what's going on?'

'Oh, my dear friend, all will become clear in a few moments.'

They watched Zanda go under the farmyard gate, disappearing around the corner of the house.

'Come, Susan,' Rosy teased, opening the gate.

Both girls walked through, then closed the gate with a loud clang. As they turned the corner, they were met by the farmer and his wife. They greeted Rosy like a long-lost friend, hugging her.

Rosy turned, introducing them to Susan. 'Jim, Lotty, this is my best friend Susan.'

Susan said, 'Hello.' In return, she received a hug from them both.

All the greeting over, Lotty looked at Rosy, saying, 'Now?'

    'Yes, please, Lotty, now.'

    'OK, Jim.'

He went over to a small barn while the girls all sat. A few moments later, there was barking that Susan recognised as Zanda's. Then out he came from the shed with another collie.

'Is this your new friend, lad?' Rosy asked him.

Along with Zanda was another collie. They came running over to Rosy, wagging their tails. Then the lady dog started rolling over to have her belly rubbed.

Lotty said to Susan, 'That little lady's name is Girly.' Looking up, Lotty said with a smile, 'Don't ask. We couldn't think of a name for a while, so we called her Girly. It stuck, and even when we did think of a name, she wouldn't respond, so Girly it stayed.'

Girly moved to Susan, sniffing her, checking her out thoroughly.

    Jim said, 'Well, Girly?'

Susan looked at Rosy with a puzzled look. Rosy put her fingers to her lips and whispered, 'Watch.'

A few seconds passed while Girly finished checking her out. That done, Girly gave two sharp yaps, making Susan jump. She looked up suddenly as there was a commotion at the shed. Out came another adult dog---not a collie this time, but a beautiful tan-and-white Cavalier spaniel. It barely got out of the door with this big bundle of black, white, and brown; some had long ears, while some had upright ones.

Now it was Rosy's turn to look puzzled. As they moved nearer towards them, the bundle drifted apart. There in front of their eyes were at least eleven or twelve pups. Susan couldn't believe her eyes---all those little legs splaying everywhere. Susan started laughing. Rosy looked at her, then joined in. Lotty looked at them, then looked up at Jim's face.

He shrugged his shoulders as if to say, 'If you can't beat them, join them.'

The spaniel went straight to Lotty, jumping up next to her on the bench. 'Now, ladies, this is Tuppence, my little girl.'

Looking at the pups, Rosy slowly looked up. 'Lotty, what, where, when?'

'Oh, Rosy, love, stop trying to speak. I'll explain why you have never met,' Lotty carried on. 'I didn't want you to feel guilty about her expecting.'

'You . . . you mean, Zanda, he's the puppa to them all?' a very shocked Rosy asked.

'Yes, Rosy, he is the puppa to them all.'

    'How? I mean when?'

'Do you remember that day when you couldn't find Zanda? Well, I had gone to the village for a few bits, and it seemed that, without realising it, I hadn't shut the garden gate properly. Girly was already with pups. This little lady had just come into heat. When I went out, I knew I couldn't really take her shopping. When I left, she and Girly were asleep in the barn. Well, anyway, when I came back, I found Romeo there huddled with them both, looking very content and proud of himself. He looked up at me, and he seemed to smile as if to say, I'm sorry, but I'm happy. I wasn't sure what had
