    Chapter 1

    (CHARLENE GRADUATED AND

    HER MOTHER’S PROUD)

It was May 24, 1957, a day after Pencil Cole High School graduation. Charlene Rene’ Youngblood, finally graduated at the age of seventeen and everybody was so proud of her especially her mother, Hadith. Hadith was sitting on the living room sofa when Charlene came home from an early private graduation ceremony. The front door was open and the screen door was already unlocked, Charlene walked into the living room where her mother, Hadith was. Hadith was cleaning chitterlings, but took the time to have a conversation with her prodigy, Charlene.

"Charlene Rene’ Youngblood, I’m so proud of you! You’re outstanding! Just a few years ago you were running around playing but never would put the pencil and paper down. You’re one smart cookie to graduate with straight A’s at the age of only seventeen. You just don’t know how proud of you I am! You know back in my days we couldn’t get no education we weren’t allowed to obtain, what they call… The American Dream, all we could do was chop cotton and work on Haddon’s plantation." Hadith remembered as she leaned her head back and went down memory lane ignoring the flies that landed on her.

Really Mama? Charlene asked. Charlene contorted her face she couldn’t imagine that kind of life.

You know… That’s why I can’t read today. And when I try I… . I… uh… Always… hum… I don’t know… I guess I had a block in my head a’ . . . something, I guess I just couldn’t learn nothin’. Never could baby, but you make up for all that. I mean all of it! You’re young, beautiful and got a high school education and all. Just a high school education would’ve been good enough for me, I don’t mind being ugly. But I care about having good sense. Hadith said.

All Mama you’re not ugly and you’ve got good sense. Charlene said. She motioned her head agreeing with herself.

Ha! Ha! Yes I am too! Just ugly as hell–ll, dumb and can’t read and senseless. All my life, but you… you have it all and a high school education you don’t need anymore. You could get you a job anywhere, girl. That’s good! A high school education is a good education! I mean a good one to! Hadith chucked and stressed with excitement in her voice. She had a huge smile on her face as she clinched her fist greasy chitterling juice started running from her hands and down to her wrists and arms.

I know it’s all good and all but Mama I’m not satisfied with just a high school diploma. Not when I could have better I want the best I could have I wanna do better and better in life. Charlene explained.

You won’t more education? Hadith asked. She gawks at Charlene idiotically.

Yes ma’am, why not Mama? I can’t help it I do and have always known what I wanted. And I do know that I don’t want to be flipping burgers or sacking groceries all my life. It’s okay for a good starter but I’d rather not for the rest of my life Mama. Charlene said.

Well Chile all I got to say is I’m behind you one hundred percent. If you can do it then do it? Baby it’s all right with me. Hadith agreed as she nodded her head trying her best not to lose her train of thought.

Mama, the counselor helped me get enrolled in Greenville Business College. It’s an all-black college for us. Charlene said.

What! Sho’nough! A college for blacks! Isn’t that something? Hadith proudly expressed.

Um… hum. And I’m going too I want to better myself. I start this fall I’m not doing nothin’ anyway I’m smart enough for it. Charlene boasted. She elegantly turned and walked toward the front door to go to the mailbox. That’s a blessin’, girl! You on top of it! I mean on it! Hadith’s alto vocals echoed hitting the old dark antique paneling and high ceilings. Charlene paused to take in every word.

Yes, ma’am gotta be. Hey, I’ll be right back. Charlene said. She headed out the front door and to the mailbox.

Hadith was so proud of Charlene that she didn’t know what to do. Charlene came back into the house, letting the screen door slam behind her anxious to give Hadith the mail. Charlene attempted to give Hadith the mail.

Mama, I would give you the mail but your hands are dripping with chitterling juice, let me open it instead. Charlene insisted. She curiously tore each letter open one by one.

You know I can’t read anyway. Hadith mumbled reminding Charlene of her learning disability.

Mama they’re nothin’ but bills, they went up. Charlene said. She looked at the numbers at the bottom of each bill.

Well, I can’t do nothin’ ’bout that but trust God. Hadith mumbled softly and tried to avoid any further discussion about them; Charlene laid them on the sofa beside her.

Mama I’m so tired, I’m gonna’ go lay down. That’s all I wanna do. Charlene said as she rolled her head around in a circular motion and rubbed her neck hoping to rub some of the tiredness away.

Charlene, you know it’s time for you to start looking for a job too, at least a part-time one. You could help a little on the bills and have some money for school. You know we could use a lil’ money. It’s needed ’round here. Hadith emphasized.

Getting a job… .! Mama be for real. We don’t need money that bad. Uuuuuhuh! I’ma lay down, I’m tired. That’s all I’m thinkin’ bout right now. Charlene said. Hadith’s words rung in her head Charlene became so angry and frustrated that her countenance showed it.

    Okay baby. Hadith replied.

Getting a job right now was the last thing Charlene wanted to hear, she wanted to focus completely on her education. "Why she wanna bring up getting a damn job, I have plenty of time to get a job she needs to get off of it." Charlene pondered. She slowly walked away blowing out steam while she was vacating the living room. Charlene stayed in her room the rest of the day until it was time to eat. The phone started ringing off the hook, so many people called Hadith today she could hardly finish dinner. Hadith Youngblood was one who didn’t like to gossip much but always answered her phone making her conversations short because she’d gotten so forgetful lately and repeated the same sentences more than once.

Finally, Hadith finished dinner which was always a grand accomplishment to her; she went to the edge of the stairs and called Charlene’s name to let her know, dinner was ready.

Charlene! Charlene! It’s ready, Hun! Come fix yourself a plate! Hadith yelled and lost her train of thought again.

She moved slowly in a bend forward position through the house turning on lamps that gave off dim light. Inside the house was pitch black because of the old dark antique paneling one could barely see anything. Hadith went back to the kitchen, fixed her plate of food, went back to the living room, and sat on the sofa; she started eating chitterlings, collard greens, cornbread and creamed potatoes with her bare hands. Hadith ate as if she hadn’t eaten in centuries, nobody ever could understand her purpose of eating everything with her bare hands and not using utensils. They always had a deep discussion about it and tried to figure out if it was because of the mental block in her head, poor home training or maybe her parents didn’t beat her enough.

What was her problem? Everybody wondered. It was always embarrassing to be seen with her, but they’d manage somehow.

Meanwhile, Charlene came down, fixed herself a plate, went back to her room and started eating. Excusing the fact the food tasted like crap and didn’t come close to what she wanted. Charlene ate it to survive and went back to bed. Individually, Charlene’s siblings came over to visit.

"They picked a fine time to come over." Charlene thought. The Youngblood’s were gossiping, talking loud, drinking beer, smoking, stomping their feet and clapping their hands as if they were at a ball game; they were having a good time. The noise they made sounded like a midnight madness parade was going on. Charlene heard all the riff-raff and laughter but stayed in her room wanting to be left alone so she could rest having company was far from her mind.

"Don’t they have any respect for others who’s try… . in to sleep." Charlene thought. She put her pillow over her head to drown out some of the noise it was giving her a migraine headache. Hadith got up and walked to the edge of the stairway and started calling her name.

Charlene! Charlene! Hadith called. She hoped Charlene would come down to visit with the rest of the family but she didn’t answer to her call, although she heard her alto pitched voice pierce through the walls like thunder.

Y’all, I guess she’s sleeping. Hadith said walking back to her usual spot to finish entertaining the rest of the family.

    Where’s ole, Cana? Ernie asked.

    Well… Hadith tried to explain.

Hadith felt a little embarrassed and guilty about the fact she’d forgot Canada still lived with her. Hadith’s memory was slipping like an ice skater on ice she didn’t even remember to offer Canada anything to eat. If she would have knocked on Canada’s door Canada wouldn’t have answered it anyway she was a serious alcoholic, yet well behaved. Canada knew how to stay to herself and stay in her room when she was drunk. Canada was in her own world and didn’t care to be bothered by anybody not even Hadith (her own mother).

That’s a different story, y’all, you know it’s Friday night and she’s in her room, drunk with her music up as loud as it could go. But I’m used to it I can’t recall when the music even came on. Hadith explained.

Hum… Everybody said. They didn’t really wanting to elaborate on the subject; they quickly moved on hoping not to stir the pot.

Mama it looks so depressing in here when you gonna let me paint all of that old ugly dark paneling? Ernie asked.

Boy you work all the time and I don’t wanna put you through all that don’t worry ’bout it. Hadith said.

I’ma get you outta this old depressing looking house one day and paint them ugly walls. Ernie said.

Now why you wanna take away the history of my house? Hadith asked.

Oh Mama you just won’t let nothin’ be changed ’round here. Ernie said.

After he finished talking everybody started talking, it was now pitch black outside after several hours everybody got up and left collectively leaving Hadith sitting in her usual spot. Hadith looked around and all she could think about was her and Ernie’s conversation as the old deep brown paneling authentically became the center of her attention. Hadith was in deep thought as she took in every sound around her, she could hear her black and white television playing low, the sound of metal fans blowing near and far, the piercing music coming from Canada’s stereo, and the sound of rats running around in the walls. Charlene finally fell asleep with her outstanding career papers lying on her bed beside her.

    Chapter 2

    (CHARLENE’S YOUNG ADULT LIFE’S

    BEGINNING SHE ATTENDS COLLEGE)

A few months passed since Charlene graduated from high school, August 19, 1957, came rather quickly. School was beginning all over the county. Charlene and Hadith were both over the hill about this particular year.

"I’m seventeen, my life’s just beginning and it couldn’t get any sweeter." Charlene boastfully thought. She had her long-term and short-term goals all planned out completely she knew exactly what she wanted at least that’s what she thought. Charlene was well rounded mature beyond her years for her age and seemed to be quite remarkable. Her young early adult life was just beginning to flourish and blossomed like a spring flower. Charlene’s first day of school was like any other typical day, she was no stranger at Greenville because some of her peers she’d grown up with were there. Charlene looked attractively youthful and stunning several young men were interested in dating her but none of them seemed to grasp her interest although she got their numbers in case she needed a favor. Charlene was ambitious she exclusively wanted to focus on academic achievements and education more than anything. She was elated about being a freshman in college and believed she’d finally arrived, this was the American dream.

"Oh! Finally! You think Mama’s proud now she gonna be even prouder of me in the near future. I’m going to get all the education that financial aid could pay for. So I could make money for myself. "Charlene whispered. She smiled and walked into her Algebra I class and sat on the front row.

On the other hand, Hadith was at home standing over a hot stove, while stirring a pot of hot grits and thinking about Charlene. Hadith thought about how Charlene had passed her siblings in education and how she wanted to always go above and beyond her limits in everything she did even as a young child. Hypothetically speaking Charlene was a go-getter and wasn’t the one to be dared, tested or tried. You could never underestimate what she had up her sleeve she sometimes did things leaving Hadith completely stunned, speechless and blank upstairs. Charlene was a little weird and had an explosive temper also. Hadith often wondered,

Why she’d do some of the things she did and why she’d get extremely mad over some of the smallest things. But she’s a completely smart girl… Hadith often wondered as images of Charlene being angry would dance around in her mind. It made no sense to get so… angry over the least little things; yet be soooooooo… . smart. What makes her tick? What next? Hadith thought. Hadith was looking forward to Charlene finding a part-time job while she attended college like the rest of the teens her age.

However, at the moment jobs weren’t plentiful and nobody was hiring much, no matter how many applications Charlene put in nobody called her. Hadith waited anxiously by the phone daily hoping and praying somebody would call her and ask. Can she come to work tomorrow? When can Charlene come in for an interview? But not a word, Hadith nearly ran herself crazy rushing to the phone hoping to hear words of that nature.

At the moment, Charlene sat at her desk and focused on her education as she thought of ways to hustle bus fare money weekly until she found employment. Charlene made sure she asked some of her classmates to donate or lend her some money; ones she thought had it to give. This week was another week she needed bus fare money to get to and from school. Charlene dared to ask Hadith because she didn’t want to put that kind of strain on her proud poor struggling mother. Charlene often stayed quiet about certain things and this was one of them.

Truly, Charlene now realized why Hadith had constantly talked to her all summer about finding a job at least a part-time one.

"Mother was looking out and was always right." Charlene realized. Hadith wanted the best for all fourteen of her children, although she had no education she always counted the cost and would give her last few pennies to help them; especially when she saw them trying to help themselves.

Mother barley had enough to pay the bills and buy food this month. And I’m not gonna let these college guys run their slick jive games on me, they’re not getting in my pants, I’m not having it. Charlene pondered.

Her beautiful smile turned into a serious delirious look that couldn’t be explained at times she looked possessed and mischievous. Charlene sat in the lounging area at the round table and eavesdropped on several conversations other students were discussing as she worked ahead on future assignments. She couldn’t help but to capture some of the juicy gossip and events taking place around the campus; this evening a seniority party was starting that would last until 12 am in the morning all of those who were to graduate this year planned to party every day until graduation day and anybody who wanted to come was invited especially new comers.

"Oh my, school just started." Charlene thought. She continued on her assignments as if she wasn’t listening. Charlene planned not to attend the party they were planning regardless; she was more interested in studying and thought it would be inappropriate to hang out with some of the older female professors beyond her years. Instead of getting herself mixed up in some of the wild discussing things going on around the campus she chose to study she couldn’t stand the thought of any legal or illegal trouble.

God forbid if Hadith found out I behaved like a wild heathen with little or no home training or get in trouble with the school or the law. None of the Youngblood’s was raised like that, Charlene thought.

In fact the Youngblood’s were known for their proper upbringing, good manners and well controlled behavior. They were always bragged on throughout the town, they’d never been in any trouble of any kind. Hadith was proud of that even though they weren’t all angels and couldn’t do any wrong but to her they seemed to have good self-control and understanding even though they had their own faults and some were more hot headed than others. That was perfectly normal at least Hadith thought. Hadith finished the breakfast which consisted of toast with jelly, eggs, bacon, orange juice and thoroughly cooked grits, (without lumps today). Hadith fixed her plate, went to the living room, open the front door to let some sunlight in, then sat down in her favorite spot and started eating breakfast with her bare hands as usual.

As soon as she sat down a couple of cats from next door ran over, started climbing on her screen door. One strange cat tore the bottom of the screen door until it was open enough for him to come in.

Meow! The cat said. He wasn’t a stranger about coming in he ran in and gathered around Hadith’s feet and started begging for food.

Git! Git yo’ ass outta here! Hadith shouted and cussed. Hadith picked up the nearest flyswatter she killed roaches with; and swatted the cat with it. Between the roaches and the cats she didn’t know which ones would steal her food the quickest. Hadith ran the cat out of the house, shut the front door and locked it. She finished her breakfast, remembered to take her medication for a change and fell asleep on the sofa. Hadith slept all day without a care in the world.

Meanwhile, Charlene borrowed money from one of her classmates and rode the street bus straight home. She unlocked the front door and swiftly came in. Hadith reflexed and jumped out of fear.

Girl, you scared the hell outta me! Hadith said.

So… rrrie. Charlene apologized. She wanted to laugh so bad but held it back.

That’s okay. I slept that long. My… . I didn’t know it was time for you to come home, Chile I didn’t even cook dinner. Hadith said. Hadith changed her tone of voice.

Mama, that’s okay I’m not hungry anyway, a friend guy bought me something to eat. Charlene said.

Okay baby. Hadith said. Hadith tried to lift herself from the sofa to go to the bathroom.

Mama, did you remember to check the mailbox? Charlene asked.

Chile, I ain’t checked nothin’ I been sleepin’. I thought you was gonna check it. Hadith said.

I’ll check it. Charlene said. Charlene put her backpack down and ran outside, got the mail, laid it on the center table and went upstairs. Charlene was too tired to read the mail right now, she wanted to study for a final, take a shower and go to bed. And that’s what she did. Hadith got the mail, opened it and held it as she prayed and wished she could read.

Lord God, how com’ I never could learn how to read? Hadith said. "If only… ." were her final thoughts before drifting to sleep on the sofa with her mail laying across her chest.

    Chapter 3

    (CHARLENE BRING HER BOYFRIEND

    JESTER TO MEET HADITH)

The months went by swiftly adding up to a year. It was now May 20, 1957 Charlene had finally got through her freshman year of college and was only a few months over the age of eighteen. Charlene’s life was bountiful than ever, it flourished before her eyes. Charlene was now just as successful and popular in college as she was in high school. She was well established, esteemed and admired by those around her; she had beauty, style and charisma. All the young men found her to be attractive, perfectly put together and intelligent. Several tried to hang out with her or take her out on dates but she was selective.

But no matter how picky a person is there’s always someone that would capture one’s interest, rather its fate, divine intervention from God or the perfect time, place or chemistry that bring the two together. Out of everyone who tried to date Charlene there was this one young man that stood out from the crowd and captured her interest. It was Jester Youngblood and although his last name was also Youngblood he wasn’t related to any Youngblood’s that were any kin to Charlene’s family. In fact he wasn’t even from the state of Jackson Mississippi, he was from the state of California and had a sexy accent that made him stand out from everybody else everything about him was different. Jester Youngblood was admirable in many ways; he was young, handsome, quiet, understanding, honest, hard-working, diligent, strong and off to himself. Jester was equally compatible with Charlene they had similar goals and many things in common including smarts and popularity although soft spoken. Jester held several positions or offices on the school board committee he was very active in the community. He believed in equal rights and improving the quality of life for society, he was a dedicated humanitarian. He wanted equal rights for minorities and those less fortunate he worked constantly on cases that involved racism especially since the riot and boycott at Delton Jr. High last week. Racism, education equality of life for blacks seemed to be a pressing issue right now. Rioting and boycotting was common, Jester always said to himself, "When is all this racism ever gonna end." Jester detested the racial fights and understood it was a serious growing issue that had been woven and embedded into the fabrics of society.

Meanwhile, Charlene was pleased with the fact that Jester’s school major, concerned issues like that. She showed great appreciation for all education in general but especially criminal justice and humanitarian development. She silently gave Jester praise to the highest degree for what he stood for. Charlene and Jester was a perfect match and their similarity was like a work of art molding together, familiarity helped them to understand each other better and they believed in some of the same values. The couple’s progressing love for each other grew stronger by the day, especially Jester’s love. His emotions were soaring out of control and before long he’d fallen head over hills for Charlene and they became inseparable; there wasn’t anything Jester wouldn’t do for her. Whatever she needed he tried to provide and whatever was his was hers. Jester gave so much to Charlene that it became second nature to him. The closer they became the more they expected each other’s companionship, they’d fallen deeply in love their courtship became so serious they couldn’t stand to be away from each other. Jester would go as far as coming into the lady’s bathroom to wait on her. He even changed some of his classes so they could have the same classes together everything about them was becoming one. They believed they were meant for each other, soul mates even their ties were strong they believed nobody could ever come between them. They wanted to be each other’s everything. Jester knew for certain he wanted to do everything possible to make her happy. His deep emotions for her were genuinely stronger than hers was for him Charlene was the apple of his eye. Jester always talked about Charlene to his parents when he went home and Charlene was always talking about her, "one and only love, Jester," to Hadith.

Charlene came home every day with a great big smile on her face and juicy gossip about personal business between herself and Jester that should’ve stayed between them. The conversation went from education to, "Jester, Jester, and Jester. Hadith really didn’t have much of a life of her own so she would listen with anticipation and itching ears as Charlene feed her more news she wanted to hear. Hadith couldn’t wait to get more good news so she could brag on Charlene to the rest of family and friends. She wanted the world to know about her Charlene." Charlene didn’t mind all the attention, as she repeatedly promised to bring Jester over so Hadith could meet him and see what she thought of him. She wanted mother’s honest opinion; besides she’d met Jester’s parents already.

The day Charlene decided to introduce Jester to Hadith (her mother) was the day the couple rushed to her house. Hadith had been busy around the house all day and decided to shut it down early and go to bed. She no longer waited on Charlene or wondered when she was coming home knowing Charlene and Jester were spending a lot of time together lately. But today Charlene came directly home Jester parked his Oldsmobile in front of the house, turned the ignition off, reach over to Charlene, start hugging, and kissing Charlene passionately before they got out. Charlene was so anxious to introduce him to Hadith that she jumped out of the car and took off running leaving Jester behind. Charlene almost broke her key in the door trying to get in the house.

Mama! Where are you, Mama? Mama, come here! The overjoyed teen yelled with excitement as she ran through the house looking for Hadith and stumbling over almost everything in sight. Hadith was lying in a dark room on the other side of the house dead to the world, when she heard Charlene yelling Mama and stumbling over everything.

Ooooooooh! You scared the living hell outta me. What’s wrong, Chile? Hadith questioned anxiously.

Nu… thing… Why something’s always gotta be wrong when somebody’s happy? Charlene asked.

There’s nothing wrong, mo… there. Get up, put your robe on. I want you to meet Jester. Charlene said.

Jester! The one you’ve been talking about, lately? Hadith asked.

Yeah, he’s in the living room. Charlene said jumping up and down with excitement.

In the living room doing what? Huh! Whatchin’ the bugs crawl around. Hum! Hadith said chuckling a little.

Ma… ma… Please stop talking like that. Hurry up! Charlene softly whispered.

I’m coming, let me find my house-shoes, help me get my robe on. "Hadith demanded anxiously, she couldn’t wait to meet Jester. Charlene helped her put her robe on then she got Hadith’s brush off the dresser and brushed her wiry wild coursed hair in place. She took her mother by the arm and politely walked her to the living room. Jester was sitting on the couch but stood up when they entered.

Mother this is Jester Youngblood, Jester this is my mother Hadith Youngblood. Charlene introduced them.

Hello Mrs. Youngblood, it’s nice to meet you. Jester said.

"Nice to meet you too Charlene’s, told me a lot about you. You know you favor my brother-in-law Harry, you sure you ain’t no kin to any Youngblood’s here in the land of Mississippi? Hadith asked.

Yes ma’am, I’m absolutely sure." Jester said.

"Mom, he’s no kin to us. Ha! Ha!
