Kenna - Leonard Phillip Wolfe
CHAPTER I
What in the hell were you thinking? It was like you were out of control. There were dead bodies lying everywhere. I’m beginning to wonder if I can even get you out of this one. Internal Affairs is getting ready to come down here and talk to me. I’m going to stick to the story that you told me, even though it is probably bullshit.
George Dickey an FBI director said to his young agent.
Well that is what happened. So are you suspending, firing me, or what?
The young agent asked.
Oh, I’m not going to fire you. You’re too good of an agent to let go. I do hope that one of these days you are sitting right where I am at, and you have an agent just like you, that you have to keep getting out of trouble. When you do I want you to call me up and let me know. That way I can say it serves you right, Steve Crain.
That was quite a few years ago, and now the words of Steve’s old boss echoed through his head as he sat there waiting for the Internal Affairs. Monday and Tuesday were rather eventful, and he was able to give a good explanation for every kill except for the three bloody bodies on the sidewalk. Hell he couldn’t figure that one out, and he wasn’t going to ask Kenna, mainly because he probably didn’t want to know the answer.
My name is Earl Ward, I’m with Internal Affairs. You know why I am here, so let’s just get straight to the point. You just tell everyone that I am a new recruit, and then you can team me up with Miss Jenkins.
Earl instructed Steve.
Steve already didn’t like this guy, as he nodded his head before saying. Okay, they are going to go on a bust this morning. I can put you with her going in the back door.
Back door, why do we have to take the back door for, all of the action happens in the front?
The five foot six inch agent asked.
Steve stood up to lead Earl to the conference room, so they could meet up with the rest of the team. I’m not even going to explain it to you, but we always have her take the back door.
In the conference room Keegan was preparing his team for the raid they were about to go on. All eyes were on Earl as he was led into the room by Steve. Keegan stopped talking in order to let his supervisor have the floor.
Good morning everyone, I would like to introduce you to Earl Ward. He will be joining our team.
Steve looked over at Kenna, who was glaring back at him. Ugh, and ugh Kenna he will be teaming up with you.
Kenna, who had been resting her head on her fist, slammed her hand down on the table. Why in the hell do I have to team up with him?
It’s because, you don’t have a partner.
Well why can’t I team up with Jennifer and Helen?
Kenna asked, as she looked over at the two women whose eyes were bulging out of their heads in fear. I guess I’ll take Earl.
Earl smiled at Kenna saying. Oh we will get along just fine sweetheart.
Kenna rested her cheek bone back on her fist saying. I’m not your sweetheart. I’m not your girlfriend. I’m just the person that’s stuck with you.
Okay, back to our planning.
Keegan said in order to break the tension. All we have to do is make this one little bust, and we will have the rest of the weekend off.
The town in which the bust was in was Caseyville, which was only a nineteen minute drive. For Kenna having to make the ride with Earl it felt like an hour. Keegan said that it would be an easy bust in and out in thirty minutes. He had Kenna and Earl going in the back door, with Helen and Jennifer waiting in the back just in case.
Here’s your helmet.
Kenna politely said as she was strapping on her vest, and putting on her helmet.
Screw that I don’t need a helmet. I don’t wear one when I ride my bike, so what would I need one now for?
Earl said as he was strapping on his vest.
Helen and Jennifer came up beside them. Jennifer asked. Are youns ready?
Once Kenna nodded ‘yes’ they took off towards the house. Why isn’t Earl wearing a helmet?
Jennifer asked. Of course those two were covered from head to toe with all of the protective gear that they could get their hands on.
He doesn’t have anything up there to protect.
Kenna answered. Everyone was wearing headsets in order to communicate with each other. Earl turned around and gave Kenna a dirty look, but she just gave him one right back.
At the time that they snuck into the backyard, they were about fifteen seconds early. Behind the backdoor stood a gnome, which Kenna stared at for a few seconds. Suddenly it started to get the best of her, and she pointed her forty five at it.
Kenna don’t you do it.
Helen said in a loud whisper.
Okay we’re going in.
Keegan said.
Earl started toward the door saying. Stand back girls, I’ve got this.
Irritated even more at her new partner, Kenna said. You’re a cocky little prick aren’t you?
Earl puffed up, stepped up on the door landing, and kicked the door in. Just as the door flew open a huge man charged out of the doorway. Since Earl was still standing on the landing, the man hit him square sending him flying through the air. When Earl landed he hit his head on the gnome knocking him unconscious.
Ah shit,
Kenna said when she saw the size of the big man.
The man smiled, while walking toward Kenna. Even though the weight of the vest and helmet was holding her down, Kenna took a jump at the large man. She struck him in the stomach, and just bounced off. When she hit the ground the man laughed, and took a swing at her. Kenna jumped back to avoid the hit. She jumped into the air again, and this time she gave him a round house kick to the side of the head. Finally she was able to at least put the man in a daze.
You two could help out at any time.
Kenna said as she turned and looked at her co-workers. Right away she could see that she wasn’t going to get any help from them. Eer, forget it I’ll do it myself.
She looked back at the man, noticing he was now shaking off the blow he took to the head.
Kenna took off the vest, and helmet to lighten her weight, just as the man charged at her. She jumped into the air, twisted, and kicked the man to the back of the head as he charged past her. When the man stopped he was about ten foot away from Kenna. He turned to face her, just as she leaped with her arms straight out to her sides. Her right foot hit the ground; her left foot caught him just above the stomach like she was walking up him. Kenna’s right foot caught the man under the chin as she back flipped back onto her feet. He was still standing there with blood gushing out of his mouth. Kenna round house kicked the large man to his right side with her left foot. She immediately spun around hitting him on the right side of his head with her right hand, which still held her forty five Smith and Wesson.
As the man was crumpling to the ground Keegan come flying out the back door. What happened, is everybody okay?
Yeah, we’re good.
Helen said, as if her life had been in any danger. Oh no what about Earl?
As she asked everybody went over to check on Earl.
Kenna looked down saying. You should have let me shoot the little bastard.
Keegan looked up at Kenna, and Helen explained. She wanted to shoot the gnome.
Oh, well he’s still alive. He has just been knocked unconscious. We need a medic back here.
Keegan yelled out.
After lunch Keegan walked back into the office knowing that he was going to have to face Steve. He was hoping Steve would just tell him good job for getting a pound of cocaine and two dealers off of the streets. Then after telling him good job he would say. ‘Go ahead and take the weekend off now’.
Keegan come into my office.
Keegan’s shoulders dropped as he followed his boss’s command. What the hell happened?
Keegan nodded his head as he said. Well we busted two men, and got a pound of cocaine.
Okay, but what about Earl?
Well there is that one little glitch.
Glitch, are you shitting me. He is in a coma. Where is Kenna?
She went to lunch, I’m sure that she will be back at any time.
Shut the door and stand in front of it, just in case she comes back. I can’t have her barging in on us.
Keegan shut the door upon his request. What I am about to tell you cannot leave this room. Earl was sent here to keep an eye on Kenna.
With an unconvincing surprised look on his face Keegan asked. Oh really, why is that?
Are you serious? After these last two weeks they thought that she needs to be under close supervision.
You said thought, so did they change their minds.
No, they just don’t want to send anybody else in here to team up with her. Once they heard about Earl they cleared her of everything, but they said not to let her work alone. Hell they said that I had to work with her, if we couldn’t find anybody else. So you need to find somebody.
Keegan left his supervisor’s office worried more now than he was before he walked into Steve’s office.
Keegan sat in his office waiting for Kenna to come back. He was thinking of who he could put with her. Audra was the obvious choice, but who knew what she was going to be like when she came back. Most likely her knife wound hadn’t even healed up yet. Trying to figure out which chair she would sit down in, he turned the pictures of his daughters in the direction of the first chair, hoping she would see the pictures, and show mercy on him.
Are we ready to take the rest of the week off?
Kenna asked when she walked into Keegan’s office.
Have a seat Kenna.
Keegan pointed at the first chair, but she went three chairs down. When you come back Monday you need to have a partner.
Keegan said as he turned the pictures.
What the hell are you doing?
What are you talking about?
You want me to see the pictures of your girls, because you are getting ready to tell me something that I don’t want to hear.
Okay then just shoot me if you don’t want to hear this. I have to find you a partner, and I’m not telling you why.
But I have a partner. I have Earl.
Earl is a vegetable.
Yes, and that is a big improvement over the way that he was this morning.
There was a moment of silence then Kenna took a deep breath before saying. Fine, let me try calling somebody first.
You might know of somebody that wouldn’t mind being your partner?
Yes, and don’t act so surprised. Now get out from behind those little girls, so I can have your office.
Keegan didn’t move fast enough. Come on go, so I can make a phone call.
Keegan took her advice, and left his office. Steve saw him walk out of his office, and walked over to him saying. What’s going on?
Oh nothing new, she just kicked me out of my office is all.
Keegan said. The two looked into the office, and Kenna glared back at them. I think that we should go.
Steve nodded his head saying. Yeah, that is a good idea.
Kenna sat there staring at her phone. She wanted to make the call, but in a way she was afraid of what the answer would be. After she searched her phone book she took a deep breath, and then hit the send button. By the third ring she was thinking that she just wasn’t going to get any answer.
Hello.
Hi, do you still love me and want to be with me?
Kenna Jenkins, so what is the other reason that you called me?
Kenna had mauled over how she was going to ask, and now she was going to have to just say it. Jared I need some help.
What happened did you piss someone else off?
I have a lot of people pissed at me, but that isn’t what I need help with. I need a partner, and I just thought that you might want to come over here to Belleville and be my partner.
I don’t know. My therapist tells me that I need to get over you, that you’re not good for me.
Well I hate to tell you this, but you aren’t ever going to get over me. I’m not going to beg, so give me your answer, and it better be yes.
For a few seconds nobody said a word. Please, please say yes.
Oh hell, I’m probably going to regret this, but I’ll do it. So what do I need to do?
Jared asked.
Kenna smiled from ear to ear as she said. I’ll have Steve take care of everything, and I will see you Monday morning.
After Kenna ended her call with Jared she bounced on down to Steve’s office. In with Steve were Keegan and Adam. She still had a big smile as she opened the door saying. Are you busy? If not can you get Jared Keppler assigned to us on Monday morning? Thank you and I will see you Monday.
The three men sat there in shock for a few seconds. Adam spoke up first. I don’t know who this Jared is, but I believe you need to get him in here.
Steve nodded while saying. Yes, I am definitely getting him in here. Am I mistaking, did she ask, and not demand?
Steve I think you are right. Hey I’ll see you Monday morning, unless there is anything else that you need?
Keegan asked as he was getting up from his chair to leave.
Nope, I think we’re good.
CHAPTER II
I’m probably going to hate myself for doing this.
Jared said to himself, after they disconnected their call.
He was just pulling into Du Quoin, after making his morning trip on Interstate 57. In a way he couldn’t keep from thinking it was good to hear her voice, and once he had heard her voice all of the feelings he had for her started getting stronger. As usual he had driven past the cross he put along the interstate marking the place where he had lost his family, but today he was having an especially rough time with it. This was probably one of the things that could have been going through his mind, when he told Kenna he would join her over in Belleville.
Jared had pulled over along the road to take his phone call. He had sat there with his phone in his hand for just a little bit longer, before heading on to the Illinois State Police headquarters. As he walked inside of the building everybody was going along their normal day. His plan was to go straight to his supervisor’s office, to let him know what he was planning to do. Richard was on the phone at the time, so he waited outside of his office for him to end his call.
You can come in now.
Richard said to Jared, while he was hanging up the phone. When Jared entered the office, Richard asked. Do you know who that was I was talking to?
No. Well I might have an idea.
Are you sure you want to do this? You do know what you are getting yourself into with her, don’t you? James Benson is on his way over here. He and I are going to go out for lunch, so you think about it while I’m gone. If you still want to do it I will take care of the transfer.
Jared said to him with confidence. I don’t have to think about it. I already know I need a change of pace. Did they say how long it would be for?
They are just taking it a week at a time, so you could just be on loan to them for a week or two.
About that time James Benson walked into the office. Hey there what’s up, am I interrupting anything in here?
No, Jared is just putting in for a temporary transfer to Belleville.
James lost all expression as he asked. Are you going to join the state police over there?
Richard answered him. No, he wants to join the FBI.
With Kenna, do you know what you’re getting yourself into?
Jared smiled as he said. How could you say that, she’s your niece?
"Yes she is, and I know her better than anybody. I have to ask, are you sure you want to do this? I mean seriously. You barely made it out alive the last time
