My dad had a garden fork, and it seemed to appear that it was the only one in the whole neighborhood, because there was always someone coming to borrow it.

One day, my dad sat on our verandah, listening to the radio when one of my uncles, his youngest brother, came and sat on a bench next to my brother. I was playing with my toy cars, but heard and saw everything.

My uncle initiated lengthy discussions with my brother regarding church, politics, education, and other topics, which lasted for over three hours. In the middle of the conversation, our next-door neighbor came over, greeted my dad, brother, uncle and then said to my dad, Mr. Ben, can I borrow your garden fork, sir? My dad agreed and told the neighbor where to find the fork. While the neighbor was on her way to get the fork, my uncle said, It is the fork I had come to borrow.

Well, it’s too late now because I have already agreed to my neighbor having it. Why did you take so long to ask, seeing that you have been here for such a long time? When you want something, there is only one way, and that is to ask. See, in delaying you have missed out, said my dad.

Well, it was not a matter of delaying, but I felt that it would not be nice to just come and ask for the fork without first spending a little time. replied my uncle.

The Bible told us in Luke 2:41 that Jesus’s parents took their eyes off him for one day and spent three agonizing days looking for him. Because they stopped focusing on Jesus and believing that he was with the crowd..

Well, I do hope that this experience will help you to understand that what you should have done first, replied my dad.

OK, I will remember this all the time, said my uncle.

But it was not my uncle alone who learned from what had happened and whose life had been changed by the event. Because from that day onward, when I wake up in the mornings, I pray to Jesus before I leave my bedroom. When I return from school, I do my homework first before going to play or watching the television. And I am studying my Bible lesson every week too before
