Preface
Writing this book was not a sudden decision, it was long before (forty years ago). I was always looking for such opportunity, time, and references to write about the darkness and hidden gray spots of the history of Afghanistan in a book, which none of the Afghan historians mentioned yet about. As matter of fact, any Afghan writer who lives in Afghanistan cannot be able to write the truth because of the ruler’s regulation. At the time of King Zahir Shah’s government, I was suffering from his deception as well as his father’s and grandfather’s regimes, historically, because they were using their hypocrisy in every aspect of their lives. They never cared about the lives of others. With one hand they offered friendship, and with the other hand, they were breaking the reps and nicks. They ran the kingdom in such quackery on the people, mostly Tajik, for two hundred years in their country (Khorasan). I hope my respectful readers will not take offense in the true subjects of reality.
For example, from the Durani family, Ahmad Shah’s son, Timor Shah, brought down their government from Kandahar to Kabul for two reasons: first, to make the Tajiks, in general, happy or to make the people of Tajikstan, in general, happy and, second, to bring and set the British army base inside the house of Khorasan (Kabul) so nobody can fight for their freedom anymore. Then later on, at the time of Dost Mohammad Khan and Abdurahman Khan, another trickery was made on the Tajiks. But the most visible one was the dishonesty of Nader Khan (Pashtun), which history never forgets, when he signed in Qur’an with Habibullah Kalakani (Tajik), I am not kill you if you give me the reign without fighting.
Then he accepted religiously, saved lives in fighting. He gave it to him. But still he killed Habibullah and gave all his area’s women, girls, children, and goods by force to his Pashtuns. Those girls are still alive in the southern part of Afghanistan. Outsiders and historians who were inside Afghanistan in the past or are even now in this time of Karzai can see all his efforts to bring back the Pashtuns in power after his term. Mostly at end of his time, he played so much acrobatic as their reminder. So all these cowardly actions and injustices pushed me to write this book.
Who are the Talibans
Taliban means students,
a name mixed relatively from the Arabic language and Afghani language. From an Arabic point of view, Taliban is the plural form of Talib. Talib is a man who studies some basic requirements about the religion of Islam and stays with the mullah as a helper and takes care of the property of the mosque and calls for prayer. At the same time, he is willing to get more knowledge on what to do and how to perform the liturgy of the religion under the instruction of the mullah, who has been hired by the community members of that particular mosque. A mullah is a man who has to be a graduate from the Taliban ministration, like a student passing twelfth grade or college. A mullah also has to be certified from the Islamic institution or from one of the schools of Islamic theology. A mullah should have memorized the Qur’an or at least some parts of Qur’an, including the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A mullah must be able to give lectures about all other religions too, and he also has to be able to explain the Qur’an and Hadith.
A mullah also has a very high prestige among the Muslims. A mullah conducts or leads in prayer (Jamaat) in unity, and he has to have a certification to conduct a marriage ceremony. Talib in Afghani language is a person who is learning something or asks for something from someone. Also, in the ratiocination slang language in markets, he is called a beggar because he wants something—it could be like money or help or lessons. In general, he is the beggar. But today, Talib or Taliban refers to a group of people who stand by a sectarian form, from Arabs and Pashtuns, who are living in the swath area of Southern Afghanistan and parts of North and Northwest Pakistan. They do not have acquaintances with the real Afghan mujahideen who were established long before against socialist, communist regimes in Kabul and/or in Pakistan. Even right after invasion, the Taliban were students of Mullah Omer, who is from Nade Ali, a subgovernment of Kandahar Province. He was a mullah in a mosque. He instructed the beginners of Taliban. When he felt that mujahideen became formally existent, he then started calling all mosques’ mullahs, like the Islamic parties.
Gulbuddin already started the fight against Russia. At the first time, Taliban received some weapons from ISI Pakistan. Their first uprising was when they seized their closest town, Speen Bouldak, because they were familiar with that town. And after years, when al-Qaeda joined with them, they seized Kabul. Before that, generally, their name and their group were not famous as those of the Taliban.
The Taliban gave formal instructions to Afghan mujahideen who already entered in Kabul. Taliban went after them with a plan from an outsider to confuse, neutralize, and topple the real movement and replace the system in the frame of Islam to bring back the Pashtun and Wahhabi in power, with a new version of sectarian in Islam besides the political concept for the benefit of America, Pakistan, and Saudi.
The Taliban ruled from September 1996 to December 2001. They showed the most outstanding, unusual ruling in the twenty-first century in Afghanistan. They set the capital of Afghanistan in the city where they should be close to their main providers—Kandahar. Every piece of information was explored, just about their actions and doing something astonishing. A number of times the media followed them but could not analyze their specific choice. Only three countries had been recognized as their supporters: Saudi, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan.
I would like to share some of their longing with
