    In The Beginning

Heidi and her gang were instructed to stay away from the misfits and the thugs where they lived. Funny, but the thugs and thieves all thrived in the same environment. Mr. Diggers, a chimney sweep, and Bruce, one of the town’s drug addicts, lived by each other for four years now, under the bridge. Mr. Diggers always seemed to be dirty and stayed that way between jobs, and Bruce tried to keep himself clean whenever he was sober. Made sense to Heidi. Heidi found she could manage a few grown-ups as well her gang of boys.

She was Heidi Hanson, 14 years of age, leader of the pack, all male that is, and dutiful daughter of Nelson and Tamara Hanson. She also had two older brothers, Winston and Zachary.

Heidi hand-picked her all male gang from their country of origin, thus we have:

    Gilbert—Africa,

    Patrick—Ireland,

    Nicholas—Greece,

    Antonio—Italy,

    Graham—England,

    Casper—USA.

Yes, Gilbert. I was just checking to see if anyone would show up and you did. You came running and I thank you for that, Gilbert. When Heidi went to sleep that night she had a big grin on her face. She appreciated the power she had over people.

Uncle Claude owned a huge farm that covered lots of land in northern England. It also had a creek that ran through it. Of course, this meant lots of berry bushes and thickets and one of the most beautiful heather fields known. Because her uncle doted on her, Heidi was able to make a small patch in the heathers to be the meeting place for her gang. They decided to make a path to their secret spot, and every day they took turns carrying cobblestones to the area so they could make the pathway large enough to ride their bikes into the chosen place. It took all of them just about all summer to complete the project, but they were so proud of themselves when the job was done. They thought they were hidden but Uncle Claude knew exactly where they were. The whole gang personally thanked him for the patch and the stones, and he was pleased. The gang also told Heidi how lucky she was to have such an uncle.

Heidi overheard her mama talking to her father about a dog for her and she was all excited. As she was climbing the
