Althoug...view moreShirley Cato was born in West Point, Georgia, and graduated from LaFayette High School, in LaFayette, Alabama. She spent her early years drawing and painting her favorite subjects, animals. Although she has had no formal training, art came easy, and in the l970s, she painted a great deal and attended many art shows. Her paintings were purchased by many people throughout the USA. Two of her portraits went to professional football players, and she has also done artwork for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co.
Including her art career was another career, that of professional horse trainer. All this was done while she and her husband raised two beautiful daughters. Their farm was located in Huguley, Alabama, and during a twenty-year career in showing horses, she won a total of five world championships and nine reserve world championships.
She started a new business in l985, that of a professional photographer. Her business, named Through the Lens, has become a well-known and highly thought-of photography studio in the community of LaGrange, Georgia, and surrounding areas. She studied high fashion and glamour and attended many classes with great photographers, including Dennis Reggie, wedding photographer to the stars.
She has had her photos published in national magazine’s named Windows, Western Horsman, also in a hard copy book called The Big Click. Her photos have appeared on the Oprah Winfrey television show. She has served as Official Steeplechase photographer at the Callaway Gardens event for many years.
She competed at the local level of the Georgia Professional Photographers of America, and also the Southeastern Level. She has won many first place photographic awards including first in pets and animals, in 1990, first in fine art portraiture, 1993, and first in commercial photography in 1995. Also have been included many honor awards and in l998 won the coveted Dick Dickerson Award. One winning photo has been printed in the Georgia Professional Photographer of America brochure representing all Georgia professional photographers. She received her fellowship Degree in 2000.
In 1995 and 1997 she served as President of the LaGrange, Artist Guild, while running her business as well as painting artwork. She is a proud donator of her art and time to the local clubs. She has taught photography classes at the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum, as well as lectured to clubs like the Opelika Kiwanis Club. She is ever increasing her knowledge and experience and is always looking toward future wins and excitement in her photography and art.
She has begun a new career as author. Her first book is under the care of agents hands as we converse. It is a wonderful story filled with excitement, drama, and hope. She is looking forward to a full career as author and the excitement of a best seller.view less
