All the way from Portable Four,
There was a special class who wanted to do more!
They met an Asian Elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo,
And she took them to a place nobody else knew!
3,2,1 Blast off the rocket ship went,
And the children in Miss Gomez’s class,
Well, a day with an animal they spent!
They will never forget their time on Planet Species,
For falling in love with threatened and extinct animals was sure easy!
And dear readers, you can help the animals too.
Just keep reading, and we will tell you the story from their point of view!
And when you’re done reading this book,
Please pass it along to someone else who can take a closer look!
Because if with this book you share,
The animals will know just how much you care!

Macintosh HD:Users:KaylieMGomez:Desktop:0121151316.jpgThe Scientific Classification of Animals
The Scientific Classification of Animals is something scientists use to put organisms, or living things, into categories. Scientists group organisms together when they have something in common. The classification of living things is referred to as taxonomy. There are 7 different categories, or groups, in the Scientific Classification: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. The Scientific Classification ranges from Kingdoms, which are the most general, to Species, which are the most specific.
The first, and most general groups, are called Kingdoms. There are 5 kingdoms
• Animal Kingdom known as Animalia
• Plant Kingdom known as Plantae
• Fungi Kingdom known as Fungi
• Protist Kingdom known as Protista
• Moneran Kingdom known as Monera
Each of the 5 Kingdoms are split into smaller, more specific groups.
First they are split into Phyla. Animal Phyla are major groups of animals within the Animal Kingdom that are defined with a Phylum. There are over 30 different Phyla of Animals.
Within Phyla, there are Classes. A Class is not like a class you take at school. It is another, more specific category than Phyla, that helps classify animals into groups based on even more things they have in common. There are many Classes of Animals, but the 5 most common are:
• Mammals known as Mammalia
• Birds known as Aves
• Fish known as Carniata
• Reptiles known as Reptilia
• Amphibians known as Amphibia
Within each of the Animal Classes, there are Orders. An Order is even more specific than its Class. For example, the Classes of Mammals have Orders that describe if the mammal is a bat, primate, rodent, or a large predator.
Within each Order, there is a Family.
Within each Family, there is a Genus.
Finally, within each Genus, there is a Species. This is also known as an animal’s scientific name.
Conservation Status
Similar to the Scientific Classification of Animals, a Conservation Status of an animal deals
