FOREWORD
I was first introduced to Scottish Terriers when I was nineteen years old. Although we’d had several dogs during my childhood (an English Sheepdog named Oliver, another English Sheepdog named Winnie and a wonderful little Humane Society Rescue named Sam), my father had always wanted a Scottie. He used to tell a story of his grandparents having a Scottie on their farm that looked after the chickens. He said that each spring, his grandmother would show each chick to the Scottie, and then the Scottie would take it upon himself to guard each of those chicks against foxes and other predators. His grandmother said she only ever lost four chicks under that Scottie’s watch (at least that’s how the story was told). Finally after telling that story for almost a decade, my father decided to stop talking about it and actually get a Scottie.
My parents purchased a little male Scottie pup from a pet store (my parents didn’t know about puppy mills at the time). He was coal black and had the biggest curls I had ever seen on a puppy. My parents named him Angus MacTavish MacFergus Dundee, but they called him Gus for short. Gus was a stubborn little fellow, wild and undisciplined, but he eventually trained my parents, and after a rocky start, things began to smooth out. However, it is when things get too smooth that people tend to rock the boat, so about a year later, they bought a little female Scottie pup and named her Gertie.
Even though Gertie was also purchased from a pet store, we later determined that she hadn’t come from a puppy mill. She was much calmer and seemed to know her way around a kitchen, and normal household noises didn’t seem to scare her the way they did when Gus first came to live with my parents.
