Moepi Winston Sematlane

Moepi is the fifth of the eight children of the late Reverend Ezekiel Nkhahle and Mrs ‘Mamafole Mahlape Sematlane. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the National University of Lesotho and a Master of Science degree in Public Economic Management and Finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. His entire working life has been in the civil service in various ministries of the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho, including a five-year diplomatic placement in Denmark during the early 1990s. Prelude

Human beings are gifted in different and varying ways, as well as exposed to different and varying experiences. But all human beings have a natural endowment of an extremely amazing cerebral capacity, which is by far more than just to sustain their livelihoods.

This short work takes root from a cumulation of short monthly articles written under a series I called Thinking the Way I Like in 2001. The motivation of the series was a long thought over why some countries remained economically underdeveloped relative to others. At the inception of the series, I circulated the articles amongst a few close people to thought-provoke and motivate them to reflect on their potential of changing themselves into a better people and Lesotho into a hallmark of creation. I did not think of publishing these articles in spite of a lot of persuasion from my wife, ‘Mamalala. In recent months, however, through sharing some of the articles with some of her colleagues and other people, I gave in to the persuasion. Hence this work! And I wish to thank them dearly.

These thought-laden enunciations have always placed humanity and its capability at the centre of development. Personally, I respect humanity and its inherent capacity to reign over the world beyond worldly material limits. I believe in a God-created universe and man himself having been created in the image of God. This belief alone coupled with the evidence of what man has so far been able to create and achieve gives me a deeply rooted faith in the infinite potential that man has in making the world a better place. It is the application of that potential, through the knowing and confidence in our individuality, which shall always guarantee success in what we do.

This work is arranged in short articles, which will instantly place readers at the nucleus of their individuality and assuringly ignite the need to introspect and combust the burning desire to change for the better. The tenet of the articles is the inherent human ability looked at from different dimensions. Readers can hop inside the book and pick on any article without necessarily following the page sequence. Each article has its own full message that requires nothing other than the readers’ genuine reflection on the meaning as pertaining to their individual lives.

It is my humble belief that this short work will contribute, however little, to the lives of those individuals who will elect to apply their minds to its gist. May its purpose sustain!

But please remember, this book is a brainchild of an attitude of ‘thinking the way I like’! So some of the articles can be highly provocative, making the readers stand on their mental and sometimes emotional toes. Enjoy!

The Second Creator

The essence of humanity cannot be anything less than the ability to come up with creations that will continue to make and prove the world is a dynamic place, which can only be comprehended for that very dynamism.

God’s creation in the form of a human being remains a mystery. Also mysterious is the capacity of the very human beings to emulate their supreme Creator by creating every other necessary utility out of the produce of the world to favourably accommodate and support their existence. In all its trials to comprehend full workings of its very brain, humanity can only ascribe its cerebral ability to the supernatural being – which is God.

Then comes the application of humanity’s mind to solve life’s problems and to create environmental and atmospheric settings that favour humanity’s own expectations and comfort. This ability of humanity to create, and continue to create and still create, leaves no doubt that human creation is phenomenal and an eternal gift. It is a cosmological right bestowed on humanity to assume the place of the second creator in the universe.

When humanity is able to achieve a fearless identity with this cosmological right, it provides an infinite opening to strike thoughts that no one has struck before; it infuses into humanity confidence to reach creation heights that have never been reached before; it holds up the hope that could have otherwise been easily submerged by challenges; it also offers a reminder that challenges are only a goad to elevate us to our true potentiality.

Each human being is ‘sufficient unto itself’ – it does not require any prior experience to think any different from all other human beings. The saying that we should not reinvent the wheel does not mean that we have to wait for other people to invent and then free-ride on their inventions.
