It’s the late 1700s, and little Debbie, who is about ten years old, shakes her brother, Gray, who is sleeping beside her. Gray, wake up, Gray.
She shakes him again. Gray, wake up.
What, Debbie?
I have to go to the bathroom.
What! Now?
Gray is about seventeen years old.
Yes, I really have to go.
Can’t you hold it until morning?
No, I have to go now.
It’s late, Debbie, plus it’s really cold outside. You’re gonna freeze your little butt. If you really have to go, then go. You don’t need me.
I need you to carry me. The snow is too deep.
Gray looks at his sister and sighs. I’m not going anywhere except back to sleep.
Please, Gray, please. The snow is too deep, and I’m scared. Please.
Gray sighs. OK, let’s go.
In their full-body shirt pajamas, they get out of bed. They go down the ladder from their loft bedroom into the kitchen-living room all in one. Their mother is sleeping in her bedroom with her door closed. They go outside after putting on boots and coats. Gray carries Debbie on his back playfully to the outhouse. Gray bucks and jumps, pretending to buck Debbie off his back, but he has her legs locked under his arms, and Debbie laughs at Gray’s playfulness.
It is very cold and snowy outside. Gray stands outside, shaking from the cold, blowing into his hands.
Come on, Debbie, aren’t you done yet?
Almost.
It’s cold out here.
Yeah, no kidding.
Let’s get back inside.
About fifty yards behind the outhouse, there is a black flash moving very fast. An alien running full speed not concerned about the kids at all runs into and out of sight. Gray senses something and looks. He focuses into the distance where the object ran by.
Come on, Debbie. I’m freezing. If you don’t get out of there, your butt’s gonna freeze.
Debbie opens the door. OK, I’m done.
She climbs on Gray’s back, and he runs them back into the house.
Brother and sister are back in bed. There is one big bed that they share.
Gray, you are the best brother ever. I love you.
Go to sleep, Debbie. I have to be up very early to go find something for us to eat.
Early next morning, before sunrise, Gray gets out of bed, tucks in his sister, kisses her on the cheek, and goes downstairs. Gray puts on warm winter clothing, and his mother is up, ready with a cup of coffee for him.
We are out of meat, Gray. You better get some food today.
I know, Ma.
Gray opens a chest and pulls out a flintlock rifle.
No, put that back. You’re not going to use that yet. You are a great hunter. You use your bow and arrow.
Ma, there is something strange going on in the woods. I haven’t seen a deer in two weeks. Not even footprints. I have seen footprints, but they are not like any I have seen before. I get very strange feelings when hunting now, like nothing is there but something is. I feel safer with the flintlock.
You put the flintlock back, take the bow, and go get us some meat.
OK, Mom.
Gray gets his bow and quiver, takes a drink of coffee, and heads out. It is still dark with a bright moon, so he can see just fine on this cold snow-covered morning. As he heads to his familiar hunting places, he hears something running at him. He sees an alien running right for him. Gray readies his bow with an arrow. As the alien gets closer, he shakes from cold and fear. He raises his bow but is too scared and weak to draw his arrow to full length. The alien is about fifteen feet from him, now running right at him; and Gray falls back, unable to prevent what is about to happen. Gray has never seen anything like this before and is very uncertain to what he should do. His heart pounds rapidly, pulsing adrenaline through his body, preparing him for quick physical actions.
Instantly, the head of the alien is cut off, and it falls, melting snow and earth from its blood. A predator materializes with its blades protruding from its right arm. A spear grows to its full length as it faces Gray. It approaches Gray with the ticking of its vocal chords, tilting its head slowly from side to side. Now standing over Gray, it retracts the blades into their sheath on the predator’s mechanized arm unit. It raises the spear in a throwing motion about to lance Gray. An alien jumps on the back of the predator, and it drops the spear as both alien and predator tumble to the ground. The alien tumbles off the predator’s back, lands on its feet, and quickly turns to face the predator. The predator rises to its knees and is trying to stand as the alien jumps face and arms first at the predator. The predator pumps out its blades and impales the alien in the abdomen as it lands on him. The predator’s hand is badly burned from the oozing blood, and the device on his arm starts to melt. The predator cries in pain. It forces the alien off him, avoiding the alien’s thrusting snapping jaws by dodging its head from side to side. The predator grabs it by the neck with its other hand and, using both arms, throws the alien, squirming and dying from the tremendous wound that sliced through its torso. The predator pulls a long knife from his belt and stabs the alien through its jugular, stopping the screaming and squirming of the alien.
While this battle is going on, Gray picks up the predator spear and watches, memorizing what he sees. The predator turns toward Gray with its right hand badly wounded and purplish silver light emanating from the malfunctioning gear on its right arm, which the predator detaches and drops to the ground. The predator turns slightly to the right to see another alien approaching him very fast. Gray notices this too and readies the spear in his arm for launching. The alien jumps at the predator, and Gray throws the spear as hard as he can, striking the alien in the right side of its body. The alien falls to the ground with the spear just deep enough to come out the other side of its body. It screams and writhes on the ground. Gray pulls a bowie knife from his belt and attacks the alien, stabbing it through the jugular as the predator did previously. Gray pulls the knife out to see it disintegrate. He pulls the spear from the lifeless alien body and holds it above his head in triumph with a powerful roar. A drop of alien blood strikes Gray on his cheek, burning him and leaving a mark on his face. This mark equals the sign of the predator hunter left upon him.
The predator grabs Gray with its left hand around the throat and lifts him to eye level. Looking Gray over, the predator tilts its head side to side, clicking with its vocal chords. It scans Gray’s internal organs with its vision, like it’s looking for something. It forces Gray’s head to the left and then to the right. It holds Gray’s head to the right with its thumb, exposing the mark of the hunter. The predator drops Gray and shakes its head fast with a predator grunt.
The predator ship is traveling through space to an outpost on the planet Otsavien. Gisen, the predator who fought the aliens with Gray, has had his right hand amputated above the wrist because of the injuries he sustained. This injury prevents him from being sent to planets to hunt. He now has the right to name a successor to his position. He has named Greygan, which means little warrior,
his successor. Gisen leaves the surgeon and his amputated hand and heads to the cockpit of the ship. Ticelon is the commander of this ship and its crew, and he sits in the left-hand side of the cockpit with another predator to his right. This is Grancil.
Ticelon, you wanted to see me.
Yes you have named that human your successor? You think Advar will let it stand?
The choice is mine, and what I saw in this human is pure predation. I watched it as it tracked, stalked, hunted, and killed its prey. I was going to take this human and hang its skull with my others, and as fate took my hand, I watched this human hunter take my spear and take down a Seccula. That Seccula surely would have taken my life. I am going to teach this human to hunt the galaxy’s most difficult prey, and it will make me proud.
Gisen goes to his sleeping bed to sleep till they arrive on Otsavien.
Now on Otsavien, Gisen is summoned to speak with Advar as soon as he awakes. Gisen is accompanied by his shipmates. The entire crew of the Bastingclo enters a room. Advar awaits them. Advar is very large for predators, very strong, and obviously the leader.
Advar said, Gisen, you have chosen Greygan, the human, as your successor. Do you think the lives of your crewmates can be trusted on a puny human?
Gisen answered, Humans have killed us with little more than spears. They are very aggressive and highly intelligent. We have all seen and know this. I looked into the eyes of this human, and it knew I was going to kill it. It watched me fight a Seccula and kill it. As another Seccula attacked me, the human intervened and killed it, knowing the Seccula would kill me. It reasoned, thought, and saved my life. I inspected the human and saw it bears the mark of the hunter. I believe it is meant for me to train and teach this human our ways.
Advar said, I have known, as we all do, humans are the most intelligent and quickly evolving species we hunt. I am very curious to see this human fight. If it passes the first rite of the hunter, we will have a translating device surgically put in its throat. You have three days to train it for the first test.
Gisen leads Greygan into an armory. There are all kinds of weapons in here. Greygan’s hair is noticeably longer now, along with his fingernails. Greygan has been clothed in leather pants with very sturdy boots that have sneaker soles for running and agile movements. He has no shirt. Gisen and Greygan cannot vocally communicate, so Gisen uses hand gestures the best he can to let Greygan know he has the choice to choose any weapon he likes. Greygan has a
