Another day but thee day
The alarm clock went off when the clock struck at 7:30am. Elijah Khoda woke up. Right away, he extended his arm to hit the snooze button. The alarm stopped and everything went silent again. Elijah knew it was a big day, for him it was. But he treated the morning like any other morning, deciding to rest for another five minutes. So he closed his eyes, then five minutes became the new thirty minutes because when Elijah opened his eyes, it was 8:00am. His body finally became active and jumped out of bed.
As desperate as he was, Elijah decided to skip his shower and breakfast, the only things that were done out of his morning routine were brushing his teeth and putting on deodorant. Then he went back to his room to get dressed. Elijah just yanked out clean clothes from the dresser and the closet, a white shirt and blue jeans. After getting the shirt on, Elijah was in the middle of putting on his pants. Then his father, Sam Khoda, knocked on his door and came in without his son’s permission. Elijah was caught by surprise.
Dad!
Elijah whined. Then he lost his balance and fell to the floor with his pants down. Sam just stood there laughing. Elijah sighed and quickly finished putting his pants while he was still on the floor. Then he stood up straight for his dad as if he was his commanding officer.
At ease, son
Sam told him.
Elijah relaxed.
I just want to talk
Elijah looked at his dad with surprise, Seriously, a talk now?
Can’t we just wait until after school? Oh wait, maybe not, because it will bother me the whole day. Especially when the word ‘talk’ is involved, what’s up?"
Well I just want to have a man to man talk, considering that you’re not really a boy anymore
Sam said,
That’s right. Even though I don’t turn eighteen until next year, so I guess I’ll be your boy until then
You will always be my boy, Elijah
Well good because boys have fun all the time
That’s what I wanted to talk to you about
Elijah paused, Oh
he said. Elijah Khoda was seventeen years old. He always thought he would be young forever. Maybe because he was having too much fun, he never considered a reality check. Sam decided to keep it simple and not ask his son to sit down. So instead they both stood face to face.
Listen, Elijah, your mom and I always wanted you to be the person you want to be, and you turned out great. You’re strong, smart and you chose a path that most kids don’t take. Which is good, this world needs at least on individual who’s not part of it. It’s just the actions of one’s self can send the right or wrong messages. One day you’re gonna have to balance them both
Believe me, dad, I try but the world can be a little cruel at times
Elijah said,
You’re not wrong about that
his father told him, Your life and the world are two different things and it’s all about how you react to them both. Even when the world can interfere with your life, it’s up to you if you choose to stand your ground or declare war, which leads us to the next topic, decisions. You’re gonna be eighteen next year and that’s when you get to make your own decisions
So why are you telling me this now?
Elijah asked,
Because the decisions you make now can later be used as examples. Whatever comes out of them, they add to your strength and knowledge. Between now and then, you have the right to experience
I see what you mean
The second reason I’m telling you this, decisions aren’t simple anymore. They affect the ones around us
Tell me about it
Elijah agreed, You buy Coca-Cola than your usual Pepsi and everyone looks at you like you’re the kid who does talk
Sam chuckled at his son’s words. That’s the world we live in
he agreed, Anyways, decision making can affect the ones around us. So when you have your freedom, you can do whatever you decide but there are gonna be decisions where it doesn’t involve you being left off the hook because you’re young. And that’s just one thing. One day you’re gonna be on your own, facing the world, and you’ll have to decide how to face it, not just literal but emotional. Not a matter of ‘have to’ but a matter of will. These decisions are more important than you think. It doesn’t matter when you make the right decisions, that’s just a matter of learning, once you do and in the end, you’ll look at the world differently
I understand, dad
Elijah said.
Well that’s all I have for now
Sam said, Now as you were
Yes!
Elijah whispered. Then right away he went and grabbed his wallet and his mp3 player. Sam noticed his rush and was curious.
What’s your hurry?
he asked,
It’s after eight
Elijah said, I’m gonna be late for school
Must be a special day because you usually take your time getting ready for school
You’re thinking of primary school, dad
And various times these past few high school years
Sam teased,
Thanks for checking up on me, dad
Elijah said with sarcasm.
Then his dad left his room. Like most teenagers, Elijah didn’t share in on his social life with his parents, except humorous moments he had with his best friends. He went up to his closet and pulled out a red hoodie from his collection. Once he was ready to go, Elijah left the house. He took a minute to put on his mp3 player. Elijah knew he was going to be late, so once he put his music on, he started running. The music gave him energy as he was running through the reserve with great pace, making his way to the high school.
Once Elijah arrived at Lakes District Secondary School, he stopped for a moment to catch his breath after all that running. He looked in the distance and saw his peers getting off from one of the school buses. Some were hanging out in front of the school. Elijah went further and as he passed each student, he kept an eye out for the special girl, but there was no sign of her. Elijah made it to the main entrance and went in. Once he was inside, he scanned the area and only saw other students walking around and hanging out in the hallways and the MPR (multipurpose room). Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. Elijah turned around and saw a guy his age, same height and had light brown shoulder length hair. It was non-other than his best friend, Andrew Little.
Welcome to LDSS, a place of crowds so big, everyone eventually gets lost
Andrew said smiling,
Elijah chuckled, What are you, the greeter?
The first non-official LDSS greeter, yes
How’s that going for you?
It’s good, you know, no salary but vacations. The plus side, we get to have a new best friend every five seconds
As more students were coming in, Andrew greeted each of them. Hi, I’m Andrew, welcome to another day of school. Hey ladies, if you’re looking for a date for the school dance tonight, I’m forever available!
Looks fun
Elijah said,
It keeps me socially active
Andrew said. Andrew always liked being social, especially with girls.
Say, as a non-official greeter, did you happen to see ‘her’?
Elijah asked.
Andrew knew what Elijah was talking about. No, not yet
he said, This calls for a stakeout
Elijah and Andrew were sitting at a table in the multipurpose room, the one that was close to the main entrance. Elijah was patiently waiting. Remaining confident as he was and not letting any doubts get to him; he usually didn’t want his plans to be perfect but that day was more important to him than anything else. Elijah had dated a girl before but there’s a special someone that he always had his heart set on for years and years. Until then he was passing the time by chatting with his best friend about their usual interest, video games, movies, tv shows, girls, and wishful thinking.
One more week, Elijah, then it’s coming out to theaters, I don’t care if we have to hitchhike to Prince George. We are seeing this movie. Especially after the show got cancelled and I found out they’re making a movie of it, it changed me for the better
What do you mean it changed you?
Nothing, I was just in the moment, I’ve always been for the better
Indeed, you have
Elijah said, What about the videogames? Can’t forget them
Elijah kept checking the entrance as he and Andrew were talking.
Never do
Andrew told him, Oh yeah; I’ve decided not to touch my x-box until the new star wars game comes out
Well that would be worth the wait
Elijah said,
Oh yes, it will be a small price to pay, but as they say, enjoy the little things
And you’re a ‘Little’ also
Elijah teased.
They both started laughing. It was never a dull moment when Andrew was around. The both had a great bond and humor with imagination they could make each other laugh. Being friends since elementary school and making it to senior year together, which was their next topic they talked about.
Well, we made it bud
Andrew said, We made it to grade twelve. We’re no longer the little guys now. We own the school!
Let’s not forget, it’s also a matter of time before we get to go see R-rated movies
Of course
Andrew agreed, Can’t forget that
After that, the subject ended. Elijah and Andrew sat there and let their minds wander. The only noise was the chatter from other students around them. Elijah looked at the main entrance. No one was coming in at the moment. It was quiet for too long, Elijah decided to keep himself socially active so he wouldn’t fall into doubt or loneliness. He thought about what his dad said and made a conversation out of it.
You know, with all this excitement and anticipation, we better enjoy it while we can
Elijah said,
Yeah?
Andrew was listening,
Yeah, my dad had a little talk with me this morning on how much fun I have and that one day I may have to take it easy because we’ll be adults next year
Can’t argue with dad’s wisdom; my dad tells me the same thing, just because we’ll be adults doesn’t mean we don’t get to have fun anymore. We’re still young; we better enjoy it while we can, like you said
Yeah that’s true. Especially with graduation coming up
And it will be coming by fast
Andrew said,
Kind of exciting and sad at the same time
Well as long as we have our memories, we’ll be young forever, that’s what hearts are for
Suddenly from behind them, someone slammed their book on the table, startling the two. The commotion caught other student’s attention for a brief moment. It was Elijah’s other best friend, Paula Hennig. Ha, made you flinch
Paula said to Andrew,
Beginner’s luck
he said to her And how come you didn’t punch Elijah? He flinched too
Because Elijah doesn’t put a stuffed spider in front of me when I rest my eyes
Oh that
Andrew said laughing, That explains you slamming books on the table
Did he really?
Elijah asked,
Yes!
Paula admitted, Once I got my work done in math class, I decided to rest my eyes because I was feeling tired. Then after a few minutes, I opened my eyes and I saw a rubber spider looking back at me
Oh
Elijah said then he started laughing,
I was so freaked out I screamed
Paula said,
You actually screamed?
Elijah asked,
She did too
Andrew said,
It was embarrassing
Paula told him,
Embarrassing that you screamed over a rubber spider or that you screamed in front of the class?
Andrew asked,
Both. Rubber spider or not, I’m terrified of them, period.
The Andrew changed the subject. Did you just get here? How come we didn’t see you come in?
I came through the main entrance while you guys were talking guy stuff
If you came through the main entrance, you didn’t see you know who?
Paula shook her head, Nope I was alone
. She too knew what Elijah’s plan was.
So… how are you feeling, Elijah?
she asked,
Confident
Elijah said, A little nervous, I admit
Why so?
I just think maybe I should’ve asked her a few days ago instead of on the day of the dance
Well better late than never
Elijah was confident that he would be able to get a date. Second reason is, the girl was taking a break from relationships. So it’s unlikely that she would have a boyfriend at least that was what Elijah thought.
I just hope nobody asked her
he said,
Yeah, if only girls were just as easy to catch as Pokemon
Andrew added.
Guys and their wishful thinking
Paula muttered. She then opened her book and started reading. Elijah and Andrew noticed
When did you start reading
Elijah asked,
Since my English class; I had no choice to be honest. It kinda stuck since
Nice choice of book too
Andrew said, Thee Lord of the Rings
Oh yes
Paula said, My sister gave it to me before she and my other sister moved to Prince George. She knew I liked the movies so she encouraged me to read the books
It was quiet for a moment. Paula continued reading. Elijah looked at the main entrance, no sign of that person yet. Then Paula started talking again. So I went to Overwaitea last night with my mom
she said to them, and I saw this one guy that was working there, he was not bad looking, tall, clean face, nice smile…
Andrew covered his ears while she was describing the guy’s features. Then Andrew interrupted her.
Shhhh!
he said, I’m gonna have to stop you right there, you’re talking to us guys about a guy
So, you guys always talk about girls in front of me
Paula reminded him,
Of course, that’s our job
he told her,
I’m a girl, talking about guys is MY job
. Elijah didn’t bother taking part in their argument. He was getting more eager, as he was waiting for that special someone. There was half an hour left before school started. He kept looking at the main entrance. If he wanted to, he could get up and go look for her himself and he wouldn’t stop until he found her but Elijah figured he shouldn’t get too eager, so he remained patient. But still, he had been waiting for a long time for that day. Elijah would rather take a leap of faith than wait for an eternity. His mind returned to reality. Paula and Andrew were still talking.
Honestly, there are a hundred girls in the school, why do you gotta pick on me?
Paula asked,
Because you and I have more of a big brother and little sister relationship
Andrew said, Each and every other girl I know is a friend, and sometimes they can be more than that
he winked at Paula after he said that,
I wouldn’t be surprised if you became a pimp
she said to him,
Elijah looked back at the entrance. And the wait was over. There she was, walking through the main entrance. Sabrina Clarin. Elijah’s heart stopped as soon as he saw her. It felt like it was the first day he met her all over again. He turned around, so he would look normal. He interrupted his best friends.
She’s here
he whispered.
They said nothing, so they just took his word for it. Andrew looked from the corner of his eye and saw Sabrina going in the library. She went into the library
Andrew told Elijah, Now go get her
. Elijah didn’t say anything, nor did Paula. He got up from the table. Took a deep breath and went in the same direction Sabrina went.
Chapter two
The girl of Elijah’s dreams
Elijah entered the library and saw the girl of his dreams sitting at one of the tables. There was nobody else around but them, which was good. Privacy was Elijah’s friend at the moment. He decided to keep things plain and simple. Instead of making an entrance, he started to move nice and slowly towards her.
Sabrina Clarin was a dark haired brunette that Elijah fell in love with back in the seventh grade. It changed his life because Sabrina was the first girl he ever liked. It also gave him a perspective on girls. Before Sabrina, girls were just classmates, peers, regulars he saw every day. He never knew what it was like to have feelings for a girl. Life was full of surprises.
Elijah approached his crush, Hey Sabrina
he said.
She turned around but didn’t say hi back. Instead she said, shhh
. Elijah paused. Now it felt like he was bothering her. But he didn’t show his guilt, he decided to play along
Okay?
Elijah whispered, I’ll whisper too. How’s it going?
Then Sabrina looked at him and spoke in her normal voice, Good, how about you?
she smiled.
Elijah went back to his regular tone of voice, And you tell me shush?
It’s a library, silly
she told them.
Then they both laughed.
Well thanks for reminding me
Elijah said, And to answer your question, I’m good
Well that’s good
Mind if I sit down with you?
he asked,
What are you, seven? You don’t have to ask permission
Sabrina said laughing.
Elijah went around the table and sat across from Sabrina. Just making sure you’re not doing anything important is all
Not really, just writing down notes that lead to something important
Fall asleep in class again?
he teased,
Very funny, Mr. Khoda, my teacher erased all the notes on the board before I was able to write them down. Then I asked one of my classmates to borrow his notes. He was kind enough to lend it to me. Couldn’t do it last night because my girlfriends wanted me to be a judge at their own personal fashion show, they were trying to decide what to wear at the dance. By the end of the night, I was all judged out, so I just went to bed
And here you are
Elijah added,
And here I am
she said
Sounds fun
I dare you to top my story
Sabrina suggested,
I can try; there’s gotta be something more fun than an independent fashion shows
That was one of the things Elijah liked about Sabrina, she often kept conversations going. So she definitely wasn’t boring to have around. Elijah took a minute to think of a story to tell her. Not feeling the need to impress her. Then he thought about his birthday the week before.
Well… last week we celebrated my birthday
Elijah told her,
Oh this sounds fun already
And we had our traditional sleepover without fail. We gamed out; watch a movie or two until we couldn’t keep our eyes open much longer
Wow…
Sabrina said, That is better than my girlfriend’s personal fashion show
Can’t see how but I guess it is
It’s a girl thing, you probably won’t fully understand
You got that right
Sabrina chuckled, It’s a full time job, and I can tell you that. Just the expectations from your girlfriends, sometimes they want you to tell them something they want to hear, one wants everything to be perfect or even expect all of us to be there
Then how about you come back to hanging out with me, Andrew, and Paula?
Elijah asked,
I appreciate the thought but I’m good with where I am. Yes, the girls can drive me crazy sometimes but they’re my friends, we can’t live without each other
Sabrina actually used to hang out with Elijah, Andrew, and Paula, back in her early days in Burns Lake. Elijah liked it when she was with them. But then she made friends with two girls and she started hanging out with them since but Sabrina hadn’t forgotten about Elijah, Andrew or Paula. She’s a pretty thoughtful person, saying hi to them every now and then. He hoped that one day she would hang out with them again like old times. Maybe when he and Sabrina start dating, she would, but that was just a wish.
Sabrina went back to writing her notes, while Elijah sat there and let her do her work. He was alone with the girl of his dreams. It was silent. Not to mention there was nobody else around. It was the perfect time to ask her out. Elijah had always been brave and bold, but shyness could be anyone’s worst enemy. He wanted to ask her more than anything. But he didn’t. Instead he just brought up another topic.
Hey, have you seen Adam Sandler’s latest movie?
Elijah asked,
The Longest Yard, I did too
Sabrina said Aw it’s so hilarious, me and my girlfriends couldn’t stop laughing
Yeah, same with me, Andrew and Paula, I think it’s the funniest movie of the year, it made me laugh more than any other comedy that came out this year
I agree
Sabrina said, Yeah it sucks that our theater closed down; we’re missing out on so many good movies
I know eh, me and Andrew had to bug my parents to take us to Prince George just to see Star Wars Episode III
I wanted to see Red Eye. That looked like a good one
Yeah, we’ll have to wait for that to come out on DVD
Guess so
she said.
Sabrina continued her writing her notes. Elijah sat there hesitating and he hated himself for it. Before he could say anything, Sabrina celebrated her accomplishment, firmly putting her pencil down on the table.
Done!
Sabrina said, Hallelujah
Woo!
Elijah said mildly,
Let’s see the teacher wipe away those notes now
Sabrina added,
He or she won’t have a chance
Nope! And it’s ‘he’ for the record
Sabrina started putting her schoolwork away. Once it was packed away, Elijah and Sabrina just sat there looking at each other. Making eye contact, Sabrina had such beautiful blue eyes. Looks like we got an awkward silence in our hands
she said,
Looks that way, but what’s so awkward about it?
Elijah said,
What do you mean?
Sabrina asked,
I mean, we’re friends
he reminded,
I know, but I don’t see how that makes it awkward
If we were strangers it would be
The silence makes it awkward, was what I meant
And we just killed it, because we were just talking about the meaning of it for the past ten seconds
Elijah told her
I dare you to pick the next topic in five seconds?
Sabrina suggested,
Bring it
Elijah agreed, Sabrina held up her hand and used her fingers to count to five. Elijah was thinking fast. Just when she held up her fourth finger, Elijah just asked, You get a lot of compliments about your name?
Not often, although one of my girlfriend’s mom calls me by my last name instead of my first, she actually thinks ‘Clarin’ sounds prettier than Sabrina
I think Sabrina is a pretty name
Why thank you; one time this substitute teacher thought my last name was pronounced ‘Clarr-in’
Haha, idiots
I know
she agreed, Do you get a lot of compliments about YOUR name?
As matter of fact, I do
I bet you do, it’s not every lifetime you hear a name like ‘Elijah Khoda’
Nope, I’m one of a kind
Elijah said, even some people call me Khoda, most of them not by accident
,
I can imagine
Sabrina agreed.
Just as they were enjoying each other’s company, a voice interrupted from behind them.
Sabrina!
he called. Elijah and Sabrina looked and it was Jonathan Clarin, Sabrina’s brother. He was tall, had dark brown hair just like his sister, wearing a black hoodie and had earphones hanging from his pocket, must have a mp3 player with him and he didn’t look too happy.
Were you in here the whole time?!
he snapped,
Since I got here, yes!
Sabrina told him,
I don’t care, do you have my money or not?!
Jonathan demanded
Just wait
Sabrina sighed and started going through her purse and pulled out a twenty dollar bill. She got up and went towards him. She gave him the money and still didn’t look satisfied. You know, you don’t have to make a big fuss out of everything!
Sabrina argued,
Of course I do, nobody cared or listened before, so why should I play nice?
Jonathan said. Then he left the library.
You can at least say thank you!
Sabrina shouted. Then she felt guilty for shouting, Forgot I’m in the library
she said sighing. She turned around and went back to the table with Elijah. Sorry about that
she said to him.
That’s alright
he said. Sabrina wasn’t talkative like before. She just sat there looking at her schoolwork. She looked like she was feeling sick.
Are YOU alright?
Elijah asked,
Yeah, it’s just my brother. He makes me wanna pull my hair out sometimes, which by the way seems like a good idea right now
"Would you rather talk? You have
