    Rider - Valerie Lee J.

    Chapter 1

Layne I think your twins will be fine. Next time you should be careful walking up and down the stairs at night. You told me lately that you have been thirsty for water late in the evenings. You may consider keeping a pitcher of water in your room. That is one way to avoid these accidents. Even when I look at the bruises they should heal soon. My only guess is that you are having two identical twin boys. We will not know until once they are born. Please, let me listen to the sounds again. I could hear them earlier and they seemed fine. I hope that you do have someone coming to take you home.

I do not intend to offend you Dr. Mitchell, but I am capable of driving myself. I may have to make a choice to move from my apartment in the city. I lived there for several years. The particular apartment that I am in may not have enough space to raise my two sons. I still have a few months though to worry about that. I usually try to drive to a house that I had bought outside the city at least once a month. Lately I have not been able to go due to my pregnancy. Not that I think driving has been difficult. The drive to the house is about two hours. The past few days I have been having pains in my back. That is why I chose to see you as my doctor. I know that you are good at what you do. I know that you will take care of my pregnancy.

Layne I have been your doctor for a year. I do want to make sure that your pregnancy remains safe. Layne placed his stethoscope in her ears and could barely reach to her bulging belly. She could hear the small rhythmic noise of the two beating heart beats of the children. She had no idea what sexes her children would be. The Doctor had assumed they would be boys. She knew that everything appeared fine. She had nearly been in her mid forties and hoped that she was not too old to give birth. She had took care of her health. She would often exchanged health related information with other doctors. They seemed to follow each others new information. After she listened a while longer to the children she found her bag and promised Dr. Mitchell that she would see him soon at her next appointment. On the way home Layne drove in silence thinking about the children that she was about to have. She thought of Dr. Bren. They had been close over the years visiting each other in different cities. At one point he thought about living with her. They quickly dismissed the idea after a few years. After twelve years of flying back and forth to visit one another Layne confused him the night she called and told Dr. Bren that she was pregnant. He had been over thirty years older than she. She could tell that he had been surprised. A few of their colleagues had suspected that they were close even though neither of them said anything about their time together. He remained quiet before he spoke.

Layne I will be glad of any child that we have. I admit that I thought that I might have been a bit old to be a father. I do want you to promise to keep me informed throughout your pregnancy. I know that things will become difficult for you. At least we both have our careers.

Dr. Bren I will stay home with them for sometime. I have been a physician for sometime and my patients do depend on me.

I do understand Layne. I do hope that you come to visit me soon.

I of course will Dr. Bren. I am sure that you would enjoy seeing your sons when they are born. Layne could remember the details of their conversation that evening. She and Dr. Ben seemed to both have similar schedules and took care of their patients between working hours. They both remained in their offices over the years. He had first introduced her years before to some new medicines that were developed. They spent their time resting together as a routine at least for the past several years when she came to visit. Layne usually had a long flight and had been exhausted. Dr. Bren usually remained in his city. He had been reluctant to fly. Layne sighed heavily as she arrived home. She had spent the whole drive running their first conversation through her mind after she told him of her pregnancy. The only things she wanted to do then was lie down for a nap. By the time she awoke her phone had began to ring. She went down to her kitchen and knew to expect Dr. Bren to call her. He sighed slowly.

Layne I wanted to call and make sure that everything went well at your appointment today. Layne you have not also seen any of your patients in about a week. I know that you are all alone there at your apartment.

I had still been visiting the house up until two months ago.

Layne I would ask of you that you do not drive for a while to your house. Layne knew that she would decide to dive to her house soon. Of course Layne I will not be able to prevent you.

Dr. Bren I am a doctor as well as yourself. I would not do anything to harm my children.. Layne remained alone as she continued to rest for a few hours. She remained on the bed in the downstairs so she could be close to the phone. She woke and drank a glass of water as she called he neighbors. They assured her that she would watch her apartment whenever she went out of town. The neighbor she had met two years ago told her that they had also planned to visit out of town soon . Layne had planned to dive to her house that next afternoon. There always seemed to be something different about the area each time.

Layne arrived and turned on the kitchen lights. She could feel the cold air inside. She had not wanted to keep the ice on during the time she had not been there. She could hear the noise of the generator and kept her coat on until it became warm. She had began to prepare soup on her kitchen counter. She had nearly been done when she found that she was missing several ingredients. She had gotten back into her car and drove the several miles to the near by grocer. Layne grimaced as she went through the isles. The few people that were around seemed to be surprised to see her alone. She had been far along in her pregnancy. Layne waited a while before she came to the line. Everyone had appeared to have left the small store. Layne held her stomach as she stood in front of the young cashier.

I do not know how safe you are being alone driving. Everything around here is spread out somewhat far. I am sure that you must have quite a bit of a drive to get home. Layne sucked her bottom lip before she spoke again.

Actually I do have someone waiting for me outside. I only came to pick up several things to finish my cooking. The young boy paused before he spoke again.

My grandfather owned this store. We have had the store in the family for quite a number of years. He also was a breeder of horses on a farm several miles away. I actually could recommend someone to instruct you if you ever become interested in riding. I am unsure if you have ever been on a horse. Horse riding may ease the stress of your pregnancy.

My doctor has actually recommended that I begin walking. The young cashier shuffled through several papers before he found what he had been looking for. He had given her quick directions as he wrote down a phone number and handed the piece of paper to Layne.

By the way my name is Eden. I am sure I will see you again when you come back. I have never seen you before and I am unsure how long you plan to stay around the area. Layne left the store and began to drive back to her house. She began to finish the soup and had become exhausted. These days she found a difficult time moving around as easily. She began to wonder if Dr. Bren was correct and she should not have driven the distance to her house. She continued to drive several minutes not knowing if she were lost. She drove and found the sign she had been looking for. Her back began to give sharp pains. Layne had drove her car into an area that appeared to be taken care of. She noticed a group of horses. A man had began to walk toward them with a bucket of water. He turned around quickly after he found a crate and walked back toward her.

I apologize for that but I wanted to give my horses some water. As if he thought something were wrong he appeared concerned. The nearest hospital is quite far. Maybe about eighty miles.

I am fine. I am used to moving around. I appears that you breed horses. Layne had continued to speak through her car window and could feel the cold air on her face. I was wanting something that would ease my pregnancy".

I would be uncomfortable with the idea of having you on a horse.

"I had ridden several times at a younger age. Then I became a doctor and my schedule became busy. I have appointments quite often in the city, and meetings that I occasionally have to attend in other cities. Layne had not felt comfortable then at telling him about visiting with Dr. Bren.

Layne I could not remember you telling me, I could not remember if you had anyone else assisting you through your pregnancy. There is no other gentleman around to assist you.

"There is but he lives in different city. We have been visiting with each other for sometime. He is an older man that has been a physician as myself for a number of years. We have known one another for several years.

I do hope that you have spoken to him about your pregnancy.

We do speak often. He wants I and the baby to visit him. He seems to be uncomfortable with traveling the distance. Maybe his age has something to do with his reason for not visiting my city more often. Layne, he had come to hold her hand. I will assist you with riding if you promise to be cautious. I know that things can be difficult during this time. He took her hand and assisted her out of her car. They walked toward of one of the horses. Layne this horse is Futon. He seems to enjoy eating right before any ride. He seems to enjoy apples the most. I do not mind buying them they seem to keep his teeth clean. He does not enjoy me brushing his teeth. He only lets me clean them maybe once a month. Layne had given Futon a stare in his eyes and brushed her hands against his fur.

I think I will be fine with riding Futon.

Layne, he is probably the most patient out of all of my horses. I want you to walk around with him first. Miller held his reins as Layne held her stomach and walked next to them. She paused after a few moments and grimaced due to the pains. She pulled her hair to tighten the braid that she wore. My guess is by the time that you ride Futon a few times you will want to buy him. I will be glad to show you how some things are done when taking care of a horse. The area that Layne and Miller had been in appeared quiet. She had nearly stepped in horse tracks as she continued to walk. I try to keep the surroundings as clean as possible. With the several horses that I have things seem to be difficult. Layne had been too exhausted from their walk to say anything else then. She quietly remained next to him. He had began to tell her his work as an instructor. Layne had tried to concentrate on his words. She could only feel the small pains in her back. When she had not been able to bare the pain anymore they began to walk back. Layne do you think that you are ready to ride Futon? I will walk along side you on the way back if you think that you are ready. Miller took Layne by the hand and she mounted the horse. She had remained balanced. The pain had eventually left her back. Futon walked slowly as if he knew her condition. He continued to walk at a slow pace until they reached the area of the other horses. Miller had assisted her off the horse. Layne had been concerned that Futon would make a sudden move and cause her to fall. Once she had gotten off he began eating from a stack of hay. If you can wait a minute I have an apple that I want to feed him. If he will even pay any attention to me now that he began eating something else. The horse eventually lifted his head. Layne I want you to wait before you begin to drive home. He continued to feed Futon. When he finished he held a sponge with a bucket of cold water. He damped her forehead as she began to breath slowly. Layne may I ask you your age. You seem content at who you are. I know that you are older than I. I know that you have spent some time as a doctor. I hope that I do not offend you. She was used to that sort of question. In the medical field they associate experience with age. Doctor I will assist you if you need any assistance with your pregnancy while you are in the area. I bought this house about a decade ago. Since I have not had any children I decided to spend my time with my horses. I have to admit that I am glad that I have been able to enjoy the house for as many years as I have.

The doctor that I am close to, Doctor Bren has visited this area twice. Both times I remember quite a bit of the details. I remember the conversations during his visit. All of that may be in the past. I do not think that he will be leaving his city anytime soon. He still has appointments that he tends to in his city. Also as I mentioned to you he is a bit older than I. He insisted a while ago that he wanted to keep our relationship without any obligations to one another. He has only one daughter. His daughter died in a plane accident that occurred several years ago. She lived in his city and had been on her way home from a business meeting. Not too long before the plane was to arrive it had run out of gas and collapsed. Doctor Bren was depressed for a short while, but eventually he seemed to gain his composure. I even chose to visit him a couple of more times during that time. I am sure you could understand how he must have felt. Everything was confusing to him then.

Layne I am in contact with my family. I do have a sister. I do not get to see her often. Layne we are discussing your relationship with Doctor Bren. I do hope that you continue to remain in contact with Doctor Bren. He is the father of your child.

Miller I am having twins. You are correct though we will remain close. Layne began to breath calmly as she sat for a moment. She had not had any conversations with any of the residents in the area in quite sometime.

Layne I am glad to have met you and we can continue to stay in contact and we will schedule a time for you to continue riding. Before you go I want you to drink a glass of water. I think that settle your stomach and quit your back pains. Layne breathed a few times before she allowed Miller to take her hand. With only two tries she stood and waited for him to return. He handed her a glass of water. I know that you at least have a forty minute drive ahead of you. At least make a call to me when you arrive home. Layne left and had intended to do as he asked. She had arrived home and immediately dialed the numbers to call Miller. I think Futon enjoyed your company. I have been trying to bring him inside of the stable since you left but he refuses to move. He bends his head down and continues to eat the hay. I will need to come with a solution to solve this problem next time he is around you. Layne listened and grimaced as she was on the other line.

He may listen to me next time I am around him. Since I have not had dinner I am eating from the soup that I made.

Whatever is best for you Layne. If you ever need me to do some shopping for you at some point I would not mind. By the way before we hang up have you thought of the next time you would want to ride Futon.

Miller I was thinking if not tomorrow, then the day after. I will get off the phone. My back is bothering me and I am unsure how I manage to tolerate the pain. I will get some rest soon. Before I can I will need to place a phone call to Doctor Bren.

Layne I will be around the next few days.

Layne I am not fond of the idea of you driving to your house. I would have thought that you would have stayed in your city and let Doctor Mitchell continue to consult with you for your pregnancy. You seem to work together fine". Layne knew that it was not the best idea to drive as much as she had.

Doctor Mitchell preferred that I stayed in the city also. Layne could not ignore the pain in her back as she grimaced. I did choose to take care of the children on my own.

Layne I rather not travel but I will if absolutely necessary. I do want to find a doctor that you could consult with while you are outside your city.

I do not plan to go back to the office for sometime. Despite the pain I needed this vacation. The house has a bit more room than the place I have in the city. I will find a physician and then we both will feel better. Keep me informed on your appointments.

I know that you were telling me about the one young girl that you have as a patient. You thought that she had a tumor.

When I looked further at the tests she seemed to be fine. I will continue to keep a watch over her. She has still been able to be outside with the other children. Her parents did not have the best of money and they relied on my information. Layne I will admit that your pregnancy has taken me by surprise. I have not had any children since I was in my early thirties. Sometimes I do think about the idea if I had had another child besides my daughter.

Doctor Bren I do not expected for you to insist me in any other way with the children. If you rather keep things the way they are Doctor then that is fine. I am glad to raise the children here with me. I will manage. Although things may be difficult at first. I met a gentleman that is a horse trainer by the name of Miller who insisted on teaching me to ride horses. He has insisted that he would assist me with anything while I am outside the city if I needed him to. At first I was hesitant to ride Futon but he is a good horse. I think riding has made my back less stressed. Maybe I may even decided to purchase a horse for the children to ride in a few years. I am certain that they will decide to become doctors at some point in the future".

Layne I do hope that you decide to visit here. I would enjoy to see the children. They do mean quite a bit to me. Layne grimaced at the sharp pains in her back. She had not wanted to mention that to Doctor Bren at the time and have him become worried. She asked him about his patients again. She had known with the young girl that he had spent several months wondering if she would need to be treated. Her parents had become concerned about several pains that she had complained of in her chest. He had originally recommended a specialist for the young girl. After several months no one seemed to recognize anything different. The specialist had thought that maybe the pains had been associated with an allergic reaction.

Layne I remember the times when being intimate with you had been an easy thing. I had not wanted anymore children then. You are too independent for me to convince you to move to my city. I tried years ago and had even thought at some point asking you to marry me. We have the mutual respect of our careers in common. I do not think either of us wanted to marry. Layne remained silent. She could imagine Doctor Bren sitting at his desk in his home speaking to her on the phone. He seemed to speak to all his associates at his desk. He continued to speak in his business tone. She had not minded. They never spoke any differently. Doctor Bren had become popular with his medical office over the years. He had carried any other personal relationships other than with Layne. When they ended their conversation she had been unable to rest and continued reading from the novel she began and sat on her couch. The winds had been blowing against her windows. She draped her black cashmere sweater on over her clothing. She had not wanted to think about when she would see any of her patients. Layne had not taken a vacation in the past several years. She had only been able to take two days from her work during the week and visited with Doctor Bren. Layne had realized something she needed from the local grocery store. She had wondered if Eden would still be working then. When she had arrived he had been working. He seemed surprised to see Layne.

I am always at work Layne. My other relatives seem to want for me to be at the store. My cousin seems to think that I could use the extra money in case I decide to attend the University next year. I gave you the phone number to Miller. He is an instructor and has lived in the area for sometime.

I did contact and visited with him. We will schedule times this week to continue the instructions. I have to admit the whole time I rode the pains in my back seemed to bother me. I will need to visit with a doctor in the area at some point in the next few weeks. The horse I rode was Futon.

I have to admit with the hours I have been working Layne I have not been riding in several weeks. I do want you to remain cautious, your children are due soon. Layne looked at the young gentleman and could remember when she was his age. She had gone through several relationships before she began medical school. She had not felt any different then as she would have thought years later. She had only been a few years older and carried a bulging stomach. Layne felt uncomfortable quite a bit at carrying the extra weight of her pregnancy.

"If my pains continue once the children are born then I may not be able to go back to my apartment in the city for a while. I have no set time that I plan to leave the area. I am usually alone when I come here. My trip in the area this time has bought more excitement for me than in the past. Of course I told Doctor Bren that I was beginning riding instructions and he was a bit bothered by it.

Horse riding is something that I think you will become familiar with doing. My own horses lives inside the stable in the land that my parents own. I want to buy another but they are expensive to maintain. Their names are Cecil and Russ. If you have any questions about riding I would be able to answer them. I was raised here and around horses since I was a younger child. The store has been keeping me busy and that prevents me from riding as often as I would want. Layne felt bad for Eden that he could not spend more time riding. She grimaced as she walked back to the car. The clouds were becoming darker. She slowly turned over the engine and her headlights. She passed the entrance to where Miller lived and continued on her way home. She had planned to contact him that next morning. She had been glad that she had been able to make it to the store before it began to rain. The ride back to her home had been uncomfortable. She tried to remain calm while she spoke to Eden at the store. While they spoke Layne continued to feel the sharp pains in her back. As she slowly pulled up the drive she breathed a deep breath. She had known that the children would be born soon. Layne made a call to Doctor Mitchell and explained her condition. He told Layne that he would find the nearest hospital and to hand the nurse his phone number once she had arrived. Layne had worried that she would be in labor while away from the city. She placed the next call to Miller.

My children are being born and I do not think there is anything I can do to have them wait. She gave him the address of the hospital of where she would be. He took the number quickly and had quickly hung up the phone. Layne had the idea that Miller would meet her there. Layne packed a few things and quickly went to her car. She drove in silence the thirty minutes. The whole time humming to herself to keep her mind off the pain. She parked her car and entered through the wide doors.

We already received a call from Doctor Mitchell to expect you Layne. I was afraid that we would have to send the police and ambulance to look for you. He said that you had also been a doctor and was a brave woman. You have been carrying your children around for nearly nine months. Layne he said not to worry, he will call Doctor Bren personally and tell him that you are in labor and have him call the hospital soon. As far as I know your delivery should go smoothly. You do not have any other health conditions that anyone is aware of. Layne only could nod her head. She listened to the nurse. She could feel the staff pushing her toward a room. As she entered the room there was a doctor waiting for her. Doctor Layne I am Doctor Avery and I am here to assist you during your delivery. I have found out quite a bit about your credentials and that you have diagnosed several cases that were difficult in the past. I am sure that you are capable of handling your delivery with simply a nurse, but Doctor Mitchell specifically asked me to assist you.

Doctor Layne, a nurse had come to the entrance and paused for a moment, Doctor Ben wants to speak with you. I informed him that you were in preparation.

I do not mind speaking with him for a moment if someone would push me toward the phone.

Layne Doctor Avery will do a good job with your delivery. Layne remained quiet too tired to speak anymore. The nurse took the phone from Layne. Layne could hear her tell him that she had heard everything she said and that she was breathing quickly and should concentrate on her delivery. Layne nodded to the woman as Doctor Avery pushed her back into the room. Layne continued her breathing exercises until Doctor Avery could see the crowning of one of the children. The nurses immediately began to pat the child as they took it in a wrapped cloth to another room. Layne was too exhausted and unable to say anything. Layne continued to breath until the second child had been ready to be born. He had cried loudly. Layne could not hear the noise anymore around her. When she awakened she noticed a nurse examining one of the children. Layne remained quiet and the nurse left. Layne starred at her children as she noticed their soft breathing. She eventually fell back asleep and the room had been dark that night as she had her children next to her.

Layne I had been concerned about you yesterday evening Miller told her. I called the hospital twice and they said that you and the children were fine. I decided to wait first thing this morning to come and visit. Layne could notice the sensitivity in his eyes as he spoke. She watched as he slowly walked toward the children and picked up a child. Your children are beautiful. I am unable to tell at this time if they have the looks of you Layne. Layne only starred in their direction. She spoke softly.

I would have thought that you would have instructions today, she told him.

I had two people scheduled , but I decided to call and cancel the appointments. I explained to them the situation and they did not mind. Layne I looked at your children and think that seeing them was worth the cancellations. I am sure that everyone will be home soon. I guess that Doctor Bren has not called you today. Layne realized that Miller was correct. She had not thought of him the short time she had been awake. She grimaced for a moment.

Miller if you would hand me the phone I could give him a call. I am sure that this room must have a phone. A moment later Miller handed her the phone. She spoke softly. Doctor Bren it is Layne. I woke and thought I should call you. The children seem to be doing fine thus far. They do appear beautiful. I think that we have to wait longer for either of our features to appear. I have Miller here with me in the room. I do not want you to worry about the children or I. We will be fine these next few days before we go home. Hopefully we will see you soon.

Of course Layne I believe your word. In the meantime I would want for you to rest.

I am curious to know have you seen any patients today?

I actually did Layne the whole time I was thinking of our children and of you of course. Do you have any idea when you plan to come home?

I enjoy my home outside the city. I have since then met a few new acquaintances. Layne smiled at Miller. I want to stay out here for a while before I go back to the city. She had not wanted to leave the area outside the city as quickly. Miller wore an old faded pair of jeans with a black tee shirt. She handed Miller the phone to stretch over to the side with her children. Doctor Bren had wanted to say something into each of their ears. A moment later Miller hung up the phone and Layne gave him apologetic look. He enjoys speaking for a while. He can tend to be long winded. I do plan to continue with my instructions. I enjoy riding Copper. She had began riding the other horse to give Miller the opportunity to continue riding Futon.

Layne I think that you have become one of my better instructions lately. You are the type of rider Copper needs. In fact their has not been another instruction that has ridden him in over a year. He is not a horse that seems to enjoy the change in students that I have. My other horses seem more willing to let several different instructions ride them a week. Layne I do not want you to rush to come back riding. Take the time that you need at the hospital. I will tell Futon that you asked about him. I do not want to miss the other instruction that I have in about an hour. I will come to visit you later. I hope that you will find something to occupy your time while you are here. She had to agree that the inside of the room she was in did not seem anything as her home. There was only the solid beige color.

Miller I plan to leave soon. She had known that Doctor Avery would allow her leave soon. The thing that I am concerned about is that I have not had any time to decorate the room for the children. I want to change what is already there.

I understand Layne. I want you to rest. Miller leaned over and had given her a kiss on her cheek before he left. The room had become quiet again. Layne had remembered to pack the novel she had been reading and began to read in the quiet room. Miller had closed the door when he left her. The novel she had been reading seemed to remind her of her own life. She placed the book her chest as she rested. She had planned to finish reading when she awoke. The room she was in had been cool. She was able to feel the small pain from the delivery she had been through. Everyone around her seemed to think she was strong to had been able to give birth to two children minutes apart. Layne had not dreamt but concentrated on the darkness around her until a nurse tapped on her door.

I was wondering Layne if you would want some water. I could even give you ice to munch on. Layne agreed to the gesture and the nurse returned a few moments later. I do hope that this will assist you to feel better. Layne had been fully awake and starred out the window beside her bed.

Doctor Avery should know that I will be ready to leave soon. I think my children are also ready to come home. She moved the small bars on her bed and walked toward her children. By this time they had been placed in two baskets. She fed them. The nurse bought her the proper paperwork for her to sign. Doctor Bren and I do thank him for the delivery of the children. I will give him a call soon. Layne took a shower and combed her hair. She took time and splashed cold water on her face as she packed the two tailored suits that she had bought with her inside of the popular named brand garment bag she bought with her. She grabbed a basket with a child in each hand and cautiously bought the children to the nursery as she finished packing things in her car. Layne slowly placed everything inside of the trunk. She had been ready for her children. She covered them with blankets over their baskets. The blankets protected them from the wind. She placed them in the backseat as she drove. Her children seemed content and remained quiet on the way home. When Layne arrived to her house she took them from the backseat. She opened the house door and closed it behind them. She walked down the hallway to the bedroom on the lower floor. She promised them within several weeks that she would complete their bedroom. She quietly sat with her children in the rocking chair she had and watched them sleep. They had been in silence for a while. One of her children had woken up and yawned for a moment. Layne had enjoyed the silence. She had to admit that her children seemed to be calm for the time being. Layne had not wanted to pay attention to anything else other than her children. She knew that their life would be quiet outside the city. She had never thought of raising them in her house. She quietly put them both in their baskets and prepared to bathed them. She ran water in two small dishes. She then picked up the phone to dial Doctor Bren.

Doctor Layne I had been resting. I hope that everything is alright.

    Doctor Bren everything is fine.

My guess is that they are sleeping.
