Educational theme: The struggle against tropical diseases (malaria).

Infected mosquitoes are the most common cause of malaria. Malaria is a tropical disease found in areas such as Africa, Central America, South America, the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Asia and the Indian subcontinent. A single bite from an infected mosquito can transmit the malaria virus. When the mosquito penetrates the skin, it sucks up blood and deposits a secretion as part of its feeding habit. It is in this secretion that the disease is borne and passed on to the human body. The characters in this book are able to prevent the spread of malaria (the Sadness) by using known protections against mosquitoes.

    The Village

It was a common thing to share evening meals in the village of Trodizan. As the sun set into the night sky, the villagers would prepare for an evening of song and dance. Sparks from an open fire would rise into the evening sky and the welcoming aromas of roast meat and strong palm wine would fill the air.

The men and women would dress up in colourful tribal attire and sing and dance to the fine rhythms of large African drums. The atmosphere was always warm and merry.

The children of the village would engage in various fun games. Of all the games played by the girls of the village, Akra was their favourite. Other games they loved to play were A-die and Play Catch. A-die is similar to hopscotch. Play Catch has a song to it, which goes like this:

    Kayleh Ju! Kaleh Ju!

    Yes, oh!

    Go tell you’ mama, say

    Yes, oh!

    Da soup whay ee cook.

    Yes, oh!

    Leh ee lef me yone.

    Yes, oh!

    Ah catch am nak am.

    Yes, oh!

    Kayleh Ju! Kaleh Ju!

    Yes, oh!

    Ah catch am nak am.

    Yes, oh!

    Ah catch am nak am.

    Yes, oh!

The person who is singing runs around trying to catch and touch one of the other girls. Whoever she touches then becomes the new singer and the rest sing the Yes, oh! chorus.

One night, in one corner of the village, Triggy and some friends gathered around
