Make Love, Not War
Those who are old enough to remember the ’60s and ’70s might recall the words, Make love, not war,
as the hippies’ slogan. Flower children preferred, Live and let live,
and If it makes you happy, then do it.
That era was a time of long hair, sandals, and instant gratification.
At the same time, the Vietnam War was raging in Southeast Asia. Thousands upon thousands of U.S. soldiers were losing their lives, dying in the name of freedom, but not for freedom.
Not that war was anything new to this planet, for there have been wars since history was first recorded: men conquering men, never satisfied with what they have, always taking what belongs to others, no matter who died or what the cost.
It was a time of civil rights, Martin Luther King marched in the streets of Alabama before he was gunned down at his motel. Thousands of others, hoping for equal rights, marched for freedom. They made their demands known to a government whose leaders they could no longer believe or trust their word. Students were gunned down on their university’s lawn.
At times it seems we have come a long way; yet things stay the same.
In today’s world, the war is against terrorism, spurred by the memory of those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, four planes, and a farmer’s field. In today’s world, no one is safe—not women, not children—and nowhere is safe—not churches, not hospitals.
The fighting takes place in the name of a god and an unholy war; all in the name of religion, politics, beliefs, and fears.
History has taught us that mankind does not learn from our own history; we repeat it. The world we live in will always be at war. There will always be unrest in a world of uncertainty, a world that has weapons of mass destruction, a world bent on self-destruction. We live in a world not of peace, but of blood. The blood cries out to God.
And it came to pass, when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and slew him.
—Genesis 4:8
Not only is war nation against nation, but man against man. We rob ourselves of peace.
The economy is getting worse by the day, and money is becoming less valuable. Our credit lines are getting worse. Hard-working, honest people are not able to pay back the money they owe as they try to live the American dream.
Jobs and careers are being lost by the thousands. Families are being torn apart by the pressures of everyday life. Stocks are falling; our 401(k) plans are becoming less and less valuable. Our futures are being ripped away from us.
People are no longer able to afford neither medical care nor the medicines they need just to live. A large gap is forming between the haves
and the have-nots.
The rich are becoming richer at others’ expense. The poor are becoming poorer. People are looking for, waiting for, and longing for food that will keep them alive for one more day.
Our souls are in despair. Where there is no hope, there are no dreams, no joy, and no laughter of little children. Only death waits.
There is no peace.
As if war and the
