    Vampire - Valarie Malone

    Chapter One

A LL MY LIFE I have felt different. A disconnection with the world that I could never place. Constantly feeling like I don’t belong in this life. Other than my best friend, everything else just doesn’t make sense. He’s an anomaly in the despair that I call life. I feel lucky to have him in my life because without him I think I would’ve taken my life a long time ago. Even in my darkest moments he always seems to be the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s amazing how well we know one another. You never see anyone taking time out to truly know anyone. Not truly knowing them. Josh is multitalented, very sweet, and has a lot to offer. He is the one that you want in your corner if trouble ever arises, and someone to comfort you when you’re down. A true fierce friend, I love him dearly. He faces major challenges in his life but, never falters being there for me. My name is Eiralav Duncan. I live in a small ass town in Oklahoma called Wilburton. Describing this place is like dancing with no rhythm. The town is fine, I suppose. There’s just nothing to do but, I guess you’d say that about anywhere if you’ve lived there long enough. It’s weird on this particular day that I have a bad feeling. All day long I have had this foreboding feeling that was making me sick. I figured I would talk to Josh about it. Maybe he could offer some peace in my sick feeling. It was an odd December night, it was cloudy and close to rain but, it was strangely warm for December. I guess when Josh came to pick me up I just blocked all the weirdness out. He and I get together every other weekend and just drive. We never know where we’re going or where we will end up. That’s just the joy of spontaneity when we get around one another. I was in the car just a few seconds and here comes the chatter. It’s the greatest thing, What’s new in your world? he said. Not really much of anything. I lead a dull life, I replied. Well my life isn’t much better. I work for a guy that sucks ass and is a small minded bigot, he said, sounding frustrated. I think that ‘assholish’ phase kicks in when they start telling people they’re too loud. It’s called getting old. I said. That may be it, but it still doesn’t give them the right to be a bastard to those of us who aren’t old. Its not our fault, Josh said, looking like he wanted to punch something really hard. Okay, you’re right. It doesn’t give them the right, but he’s also old Josh. He’s never going to see it any other way. Whatevs! he said. You can’t change the way people think. That’s how they are and you have to learn to deal. So just suck it up! I said. He just stared and blinked in disbelief. I know you think I’m taking up for him, but Im not. I think people have the right to do whatever the hell they want as long as they’re happy. But that doesn’t mean that they or you need to worry about what some asshole thinks or says. I said, trying to cool my jets. Josh was so good at pissing me off. Especially on a subject that I feel very passionate about. The sound of Josh’s laughter broke through the night and irritated my mood. You sound more pissed than I do, he said through laughter. I am, I mean, I was. I said, smiling up at him. Uh, huh, he said. Okay smiley, so what do you want to do? Well, I wanna drive around somewhere, I just don’t know where. What do you wanna do? he asked. I don’t care. I’m just along for the ride. I said. He just shook his head and gave me his you suck so bad look. What?! I said. Why do you always say that? Josh said. Because its true! I’m here to accompany you in whatever goofy adventure you want to embark. I said while laughing and trying to sound extremely intelligent, which was not working. Well we could go north, he said. Yea, okay, and get lost again like we did the last go around?" I said while again laughing at him.

He smiled and said, well it was your fault because you didn’t tell me where you wanted to go. Well it doesn’t matter where we go cause I always have fun as long as we’re together. You always make our little getaways interesting, I said.

He leaned over the table of the little picnic area used for camping and kissed me softly. We had stopped at our usual spot in Robbers Cave and talked while deciding where to go. When he raised up, I looked at him and smiled. Then the air changed from slightly warm to an eerie cold that almost made my skin crawl. Josh was no longer looking at me. His attention was drawn to the wooded area of the trees behind me. I couldn’t speak. It was like my voice was paralyzed. I turned my head to face what Josh was staring at. When I saw what was drawing his attention, I gasped in disbelief.

It had the body of a man, but it was no human. He was beautiful with yellow-green glowing eyes that seemed to pulsate. His hair was long and dark, and his face was light, almost ghostlike and seemed to glow. It wasn’t like death though, it was like life magnified. It reminded me of when the sun rises and kisses the morning. He wore dark clothes, and a long black trench coat that almost swept the ground. Black pants that complimented his black leather combat boots. He was very masculine, and was wearing a dark purple long sleeved silk shirt. All around in the trees behind him were red glowing eyes that seemed to hiss in the night. The creature appeared to be floating on magenta mist. It was so strange that I could see all this through my peripherals. When my gaze went up, our eyes locked. I could feel that Josh was no longer sitting on the bench. In one swift motion, the creature floated to close the gap between us. He bent over the table to caress my face as he whispered something in my ear. And as if my soul recognized what he said, my body responded in a slight tremor. These are the words he whispered: Tha gaol agamort. Which is ‘I love you’ in Scottish Gaelic. I was completely confused, my head swimming like I’d drank too much tequila. My body still paralyzed, I couldn’t see if Josh was still there. Until I heard his voice, in a shaky voice he spoke to the creature. Who are you? What do you want? I am here for her, the creature said. Why are you here for her? Josh asked while the creature just gave him a sinister smile. Moments passed and it really began to frustrate Josh even further. Why are you avoiding the question, you fucking bastard? Josh asked sounding slightly more pissed off. The creature looked at Josh with disdain and absolute hate and said in a sneer, I avoid nothing. I will also answer nothing to the likes of you. Then with a magnified voice that seemed to thunder in the night, he said, Be gone! Or I shall drain you of your life. Josh took a half step back. The creature turned back to me and caressed my face once more. Then from out of the darkness the creatures that were in the trees with red eyes flourished in the night. Their hisses became louder and louder. Then Josh’s voice came commanding in the night and yelled, What do you want from her?! The creature laughed and simply said, Everything! He glanced up and with a fierce stare with his glowing eyes and said, This, will be your last chance. Leave or die!

Without hesitation, Josh turned and ran to his car. Before he could open the door he took another look and watched as the creature bit into my neck.

Josh gasped in fear and as soon as my body jerked I heard him start his vehicle and speed away. I couldn’t believe he left me. At about the same time that thought processed through my mind, the pain overwhelmed my mind, body, and soul. It felt like shards of metal debris tearing through my entire existence.

And at that moment, I realized I was screaming. The first thing I remembered when I woke up was that there had been a beautiful creature there to claim me. And it had threatened Josh, he had left me there. But I could not be mad at him. I believe I would have done the same thing in his position.

It took a few hours to get my head to work right. It was unusually hot. I made my way to the lake and splashed myself with water, wiping my face with the bottom of my shirt. I glanced at my reflection and had to look again. I was beautiful. My skin glowed, my eyes were sharper and had deeper definition, as if they could peer into ones soul. My waist long curly hair was healthier, thicker, and a brighter burgundy than I had ever seen. And the bite on my neck was completely healed. The other thing that caught my attention was that my eyes were actually glowing violet. It was about that time that I heard a vehicle approach. I looked up to see a park ranger had pulled up and was getting out of his truck with a blanket. He took one look at me and hesitated. A hesitation that lasted maybe a second, and then he smiled warmly at me.

He walked up and slowing, in a deep sincere voice, said, Hello miss, are you alright? Yes, I think so, I said, still dazed from current events. My senses began working like a locomotive and I could hear his thoughts, smell his skin, and feel his breath. I could hear his blood rushing through his veins. I was trying so hard to contain myself that I didn’t hear him speaking to me. Miss? Miss? Are you sure you’re alright? he asked while wrapping the blanket around me, looking very concerned.

Yes, I’m alright, I said, keeping my eyes to the ground so that he couldn’t see them, in case they were glowing. He looked at me with concerned eyes. Without looking at him, I knew what he was doing and thinking. To put myself at ease, I spoke to him. Who are you? My name is Ian, Ian Haddock. he said while opening the passenger door of his truck.

I’ve never seen you here before, I said, after he made his way around the pick-up and got in. Yeah, I’m new. I’ve only been here about two weeks, he said while driving over rocks and avoiding potholes.

AS he drove I was sneaking glances at him. He had dark hair down to his broad shoulders. He was very muscular, and I have to say that he was relevantly yummy. The very thought of him looking at me was really intense. With his dark eyes smiling at me and keeping the conversation going, he said, So why were you out here so early? I didn’t look up, just kept my eyes on the floor. Second passed and I finally said, How did you know anyone was down here? He looked at me and knew that I was intentionally not looking at him. And then he looked straight ahead to the road to make a right hand turn and said, I have no idea. I just had a feeling. Huh? I said while chuckling. He looked over my direction without actually looking at me and asked, Are you uh, warming up over there? I smiled and said, Yeah, I am a little it. Good, I’m glad," he said, trying to hide his smile.

We pulled up to the park rangers station and Ian got out of the truck and walked around to the passenger side to let me out. What are we doing here? Am I in trouble or something? I asked, trying not to sound as panicky as I felt. No, you’re not in trouble. I just thought you’d want to grab a hot shower and some warmer clothes.

We went into the station and it was empty. Are you alone today? I asked while he was looking in a locker room for some clothes for me to put on after my shower. Yeah, I am today anyway. But I like it because it gives me a chance to breathe, he said.

I smiled at him, then silence filled the room. Then his phone rang and he said quickly, here, take these and have a shower. I’ll be here when you’re finished. Okay, I said while grabbing the clothes and heading for the bathroom.

The shower felt amazing. I couldn’t remember feeling so revived. But as I put on the warm clothes, I noticed that I was hungry. When I thought about food, that wasn’t what I craved. So as I walked out of the bathroom I noticed Ian had taken off his ranger uniform shirt and was wearing a tight wife beater, exposing his muscular arms. He was making sandwiches when the smells again overwhelmed me. The smell of the soap on his skin, his breath, and his blood pulsing through his veins. My breath was coming faster and I was about to lose all control when I heard him say, You feel better now that you’re warm?

I barely looked up and just nodded. I was looking around the room when I noticed something was off, so I asked, Why do you have all the blinds closed and the door locked? Ian looked at me and smiled and started walking toward me. He said, I’m going to give you what you need. What the hell are you talking about? I said while taking a step back. You feel weak, and you have a lot of senses going on all at once. And you can hear my blood can’t you? he asked, still smiling at me. How do you know that, Ian? I asked while still stepping away from him. Because I know what you are. he said while still coming toward me. How do you know that? I asked while being totally shocked at what he was saying.

I’m not stupid. I saw your eyes. I just want to help you. So let me. he said. Why do you want to help me? I asked. I don’t know, I just do. he replied.

I don’t know what to do. I said, looking down at the floor in embarrassment. I think I do. Come here. he said as he grabbed me, pulling me to him and wrapping me in a warm embrace. Locking us so close I almost couldn’t breathe. His scent wafted around me like burning incense and I could feel his pulse beat faster and faster. Our lips touched and I could feel his grip get tighter. He finally spoke after being able to break his insanely passionate kiss. He took in a deep breath and said You’re gonna have to bit my neck and drink from me.

Without any hesitation I did as he instructed. The intensity of it was like the hydrogen bomb went off inside both of us. That was the first time the sex had ever seemed to go frame and frame, and not in order. But our bodies became one and everything seemed to melt away like a kick ass acid trip from hell. I remember hearing the song Fades Like a Photograph playing in the background. Afterward, we held each other and he says, That was wickedly intense!

I breathed a sigh and smiled at him.

Are you okay? I asked him, raising up out of his embrace. Yes, I’m fine. Everything is fine. No need to panic. Now come back over here, he said smiling at me and holding his arms open for me to come back into his embrace.

I fell into a coma-like sleep and didn’t wake up ‘til after nightfall. When I finally awoke, I saw Ian cuddled up beside me, staring at me, smiling like he had just won the lottery. What are you doing? I asked him while getting up to put on my clothes.

Nothing, just laying here watching you recharge. he said. Can you take me home? I asked. Sure, but, why do you want to go so soon? he asked while getting dressed, hobbling around to find his shoes. Because there are some things I have to do, I said while giggling at him for hopping around.

We finally made it to my house. As I was getting out of the truck Ian grabbed my hand and smiled at me. With a raspy voice he says, Hey, if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask me, okay?

Don’t worry, I won’t hesitate. I kissed him good-bye and mouthed the words thank you to him. By the way. Are you ever going to tell me your name? he asked. Sure, my name is Eiralav. I said. And you’re welcome. he said.

    Chapter Two

W HEN IAN WAS finally down the road, I rushed into the house where my roommate was playing Guitar Hero. She didn’t notice that I came in. I just walked in and went straight to my room and locked the door behind me. I sat on my bed and replayed in my mind what had actually happened to me. Everything was a blur and all jumbled together. I didn’t even realize that I was crying until I looked in the mirror. Behind me was magenta smoke billowing from the slightly opened window in my room. I turned around to see a form taking shape in the smoke. It was the beautiful creature that had taken claim on me just the night before. I stood there frozen like a damn statue with my mouth open. Then he appeared and swept toward me.When he stood before me he looked so powerful, his eyes glowing their fiercest yellow-green glow. SMiling at me with sadness in his eyes, he spoke. I have been looking for you, my love. My love? Why are you calling me that? I asked while looking at him like he just escaped from a mental hospital. Yes, you called to me with your soul. I just simply answered your call. he said. That doesn’t make sense! What the hell did you do to me? What the hell am I? I shouted, frustrated with exhaustion. You are now like me. Powerful beyond belief. You are a vampyre, although you are not yet completely changed. But you will be the next full moon, which is in three days. he said while waling around my room, looking at my things.Who are you? What do you want from me? I shouted, unable to control my anger and despair. I sat heavily on the bed and let out a long exasperated sigh. The creature walked over to me and knelt down and gently took my hand.My name is Kellan Anderson. I am a vampire who was tapped into you. I don’t know why. I just followed it. he said with an understanding voice. He continued with his explanation. This has only happened once before in the 1920s. I couldn’t explain then and it isn’t any easier now. When a soul calls to me it cannot be ignored. You will understand all of this very soon. he said.He looked at me and held my hands, caressing them gently as if thru touch the information would be easier to take. So you’re telling me that my soul called to you and wanted you to change me? I said trying to piece the puzzle together. Yes, that is pretty much how it happened, he said. Okay. So what are the guidelines? I asked. Guidelines? he asked looking confused. Yes, what are the need to know rules of being a vampire? I asked sounding curious. Actually I was very curious. Some of this was pretty cool.Well, first, I would like to try to explain to you why certain souls call to us, if you will allow me to do so. he said while gesturing for me to slow down.Yes, please, I said.He smiled and pulled up my desk chair to sit directly in front of me.Alright, sometimes when one’s soul does not feel complete in the world, they call to what does complete them. If the soul cannot reach what it longs for, then it just settles. It stays unhappy until it departs, and then seeks out what was missing. he said while keeping his eyes on me to make sure I understood.Sometimes a souls unhappiness leads the vessels, which are human bodies, to do strange things like committing suicide, he said. My eyes widened and blinked in disbelief. Are you kidding me? I asked. No, my love. I am not kidding. It is absolutely heartbreaking. he said with saddened eyes. Yes it is, I said. I didn’t know what else to say. His words had stricken me with a great sadness. He drew in a long breath and let it out slowly. He leaned forward and began to explain the completion of my change. On the third night you will have completely changed to Vampire. It will be indescribably painful, he said while looking away from me. How long will it last? I asked. The time varies for every vamp. It really depends on how powerful the vamp is becoming, he said. I don’t really understand what you mean. I said, biting my lip. What I mean is that all vamps are different. All have different powers and some are more powerful than others, he said with a slight smile. How powerful will I be? I asked, not able to contain my curiosity. Only time will tell. You will be growing more powerful from the time you were bitten to the time you complete the change, Kellan said. Why are our eyes glowing different colors? I asked. Okay, our eyes glow when we have a longing for what we want. When we are angry our eyes glow red. And what ever color your eyes glow when you want something is the color of mist that you will transform into when you fly. But not all vamps are the same. he said, pacing to get his thoughts organized. Well why do your eyes glow a yellow green and your mist is magenta, Kellan? He found my eyes and said, because I’m different than all vampyres. I am extremely powerful, and whatever color mist you have, there will be magenta in it as well. Because you are the one who made me? I asked. Yes, he said, smiling. I looked down at him and he gazed back at me with his glowing yellow-green eyes. I looked down and could feel my face getting red. So we can fly? I asked, shaking off how flustered I felt inside. Yes, we can. And you will. You will also have a relentless bloodthirst as well. he said. What if I already have that? I asked. He stopped his pacing and spun around so fast it was a blur. Have you fed yet? Yes, I replied. His eyes widened and stopped breathing for what seemed a long time. Finally, he inhaled a breath and asked, Did you kill the one you fed from? No! I replied in confusion. Why not? he shot back. I didn’t want to kill him, I said. He offered himself to you." he said, not phrasing it as a question, but I nodded. Kellan smiled and let out a sigh of relief.

What? I asked completely panicked. When humans offer themselves to you, you will never feel the need to kill. If they don’t offer and you take anyways, and you will, then you will kill them. he replied. Why do we do that? I asked. Humans who know we exist are not threatened by us. Only the ones who don’t know are threatened. So in order to stay in the shadows, we kill those victims. he told me, while touching my face gently. But I don’t want to kill anyone, I said, shaking all over. I know you don’t. But you’ll never have a choice, he said looking at me sadly.I looked from him and processed what he was saying. I couldn’t believe it. The fact that it was wrong was one thing, but to kill innocent people was another. How could we have souls if we did that? It just kept circling in my head. Then I shook myself mentally as Kellan’s voice snapped me back to reality. When was the last time you fed? he asked me while looking at my hands. They were shaking and he knew that I was drained. Kellan glided through my room to hold my face in his hands. He noticed that my eyes were glowing a fierce violet.

Early this morning. It was a little after sunrise. I said, looking back into his eyes which were glowing as well. You need this, come here, he said in a rush. Is the door locked? he asked while taking off his trench coat and purple silk long sleeved shirt and draped it over the chair. Yes, I answered him, sounding weaker, so much that it was a whisper. Good, come here. he said as he grabbed ahold of me and picked me up like I was nothing more than a chair.I straddled him while he sat back on the bed. I positioned myself on him to make sure we were both comfortable. I glanced at him nervously and he just smiled up at me. Um, what do you want me to do I asked him in a shaky breath. What did you do earlier? he asked. Well, I bit, fed, and had sex. I said quickly in one breath. Kellan chuckled and looked up at me and he could tell that I was embarrassed. He stopped laughing and cupped my face in his hands. He pulled me to him and gazed into my eyes, smiled and me and kissed me passionately. It was deepened into a fierce passion. He absolutely took my breath away. He made me feel goddess-like, completely desirable. I felt beautiful and feminine. He drew back from our kiss and said, Bite my neck and drink from me, my love. I didn’t answer. I just nodded and quickly went straight to his neck without any hesitation.Softly kissing and licking it before biting him. Kellan moaned the moment I bit into his neck and drank. With the intensity that surged through my body like lightning striking in every sensitive area. I could feel Kellan wrapping me tighter in his arms. He lifted me up to him so I could position myself better. When I was done feeding I raised up and gasped. I could feel the power coursing through me. In one swift movement Kellan took one of his fingers and sliced it though my shirt, ripping it off of me. Then in another movement, flipped me around twirling me in the air. Before I could blink he was on top of me. He then bit into my neck while I bit into his shoulder. Completely engulfed in passion, heat, and desire. We made love that seemed to echo through the night.

We were just laying there totally melted into one another when I heard a knock on the front door. My roommate answered the door. Josh’s voice and scent came through my locked bedroom door like a clever thief in the night. Kellan looked at me and said, I must go, my love. I looked at him and said, okay. I could hear Josh telling my roommate that he couldn’t help me.Kellan was fully dressed and turned to me and kissed me tenderly, and said If you need me, just call to the moon and I will hear and come to you. I smiled and nodded to him as he turned into magenta mist and billowed out my window, disappearing into the night.

    Chapter Three

I CRACKED MY DOOR open, after getting dressed. I could hear Josh talking to my roommate incoherently between sobs. He was so upset that I just couldn’t stand it anymore.

I peered into the living room doorway. They were sitting on the couch and my roommate, whose name is Pamela (but I call her Pistol Pam because she shoots her mouth off way too much) was trying desperately to comfort Josh.

Pam was at the end of her non-existent patience when she saw me in the doorway. Hey, Eiry come see if you can get him to calm down, because I am about to lose it here. she said, making her way toward me.

Josh turned in a fast motion that surprised even me. He looked at the doorway and turned as white as a sheet. I came through the doorway while looking at the floor. He immediately stood up from the couch. He was just staring at me, from what seemed a long time. Finally, he got the nerve to speak while studying me. Eiry, is that really you Yes, Josh, it is really me, I said while still looking at the floor. I thought you were dead, he said trying to stifle a sob. No, I am not dead. I am right here. I said. Why won’t you look at me? he asked. Because. I said, not really knowing what else I could say.

You hate me don’t you? You hate me because I left. he said through tears. No Josh, I don’t hate you. I’m not even mad at you. I said.

He just stared at me. I know he was because I could feel his stare. I finally said,If I look at you you’ll just freak out and leave. Why will I freak out? You do look different. Did you dye your hair or something? he asked, stepping closer to me. I turned to face him. No, I didn’t dye my hair or anything like that. I said.

Please look at me! he said. "Alright, I’ll
