    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

T HERE ARE MANY people who have directly or indirectly contributed to this work. I would like to thank my wife, Mary, for her support, understanding and sacrifice.

Other family members and friends have read my many drafts and given me their opinions, which are appreciated. And most of all, I want to thank God for the wonderful gift of imagination which he has given me.

    CHAPTER 1

T HURSDAY NIGHT. THERE was a big game between the Portsmouth Pirates and the Berwick Spiders. The game was very close. It was the 4 th quarter and only 5 minutes left in the game. The score was 21 to 21 and the Berwick Spiders had possession of the ball. Robby, a slim figure in blue and white, was staring at the enemy over the backs of his crouching linemen. Set! Hup-hup-hup. The center snapped the ball, and the crowd stared with anticipation, holding their breath. What would Robby, the Berwick Spider quarterback, do?

Robby quickly stood up and rolled to the right. He faded back as if to pass. He moved away from one tackler and straight-armed another one. Downfield, three receivers zigged, zagged, looked back and zigged again. Back and forth, Robby dodged. It looked like he was trapped. Still unable to pass, he raced forward. Five yards. Ten yards. Then he passed the line of scrimmage and went on to a first down before he was tackled. In excited anticipation, the team formed quickly into a huddle. Robby gave breathlessly instructions for the next play. Robby called for a time out. As Robby ran over to the coach, He talked to the coach. Then the announcer came over the loud speaker, Number 24, CW Wilkerson going in for Number 28 Bobby Moon. As CW ran onto the field, Robby turned to CW, let do what we did at practice. The bomb. Are you ready?

In the bleachers, Marvin turned to his wife, Whew, Sally, I was sure that Robby was going down. That was a tense moment.

I’m more worried about him getting hurt. Sally replied relieved. Oh look, there’s Susan. Doesn’t she look great in her cheerleading outfit?

Distractedly, Marvin answered, Ya, she looks great. Hush, they’ve started again. Marvin yelled out, Go Spiders! Go!

Set! Hup-hup-hup. The center snapped the ball. Robby rolled to the right and faded back as if to pass again. He moved away from one tackier and straight-armed another. Downfield, three receivers zigged, zagged, looked back and zigged again. Back and forth Robby dodged. It looked like he was going to be trapped again. He scrambled to the left. Suddenly, he was finally open. Robby stopped in his tracks, and threw a perfect spiral, 17 yards, downfield. CW, the receiver, was already in the end zone. Touchdown!

Marvin jumped up from his seat, Hooray! That’s our team! Way to go Spiders!

The Berwick Spiders set up for the field goal. The team lined up. On one knee, Robby calls, Set! Hup-hup-hup. The center snapped the ball to Robby. Robby held the ball with one finger. Albert, the kicker, solidly struck the ball. Up, up, the ball went as it spiraled towards the goal post. The crowd in the bleachers stood to their feet holding their breath. They watched as the ball flew through the goal post. The referee’s arms when up as he blew his while. Field goal! The buzzer went off. The game ended with the Berwick Spiders, 28 and the Portsmouth Pirates, 21. The fans in the bleachers were yelling and stamping their feet. The band played the Rocky theme of victory. The excited cheerleaders were waving their pom poms, jumping up and down yelling, We’re number one! We’re number one! Some of the cheerleaders and fans ran onto the field to hug the football players.

Linda Clark, the head cheerleader, ran out to Robby, her boyfriend. She jumped into his arms and gave him a big kiss. She screamed, Way to go Robby! Alright!

The other football players were giving Robby high fives or patted him on the rump. Even the coach gave Robby a high five and a smack on his helmet.

After the field was cleared, Marvin and Sally walked out of the bleachers and down to the field house. They found Linda and Susan standing next to the field house waiting for the players to come out.

Smiling, Marvin said, Susan, you and cheerleaders did a great job. I’m proud of you.

Susan barely able to contain yourself said, Thanks Dad. Wasn’t Robby great?

He sure was. I am proud of the whole team. They did a fantastic job! Marvin exclaimed.

Susan walked over to her mother, Sally, So, how did we do with the new cheerleading routine you helped us with?

I loved the double twist. It came off perfectly. I was so scared for you when you were on the top. Sally grinned.

Susan asked, Mom, can we give Linda a ride home tonight?

I don’t see a problem with that. Sally replied.

Robby came out of the field house. A big cheer went up from the other parents waiting. Robby raised his hands in a victory grip. Linda ran up to him and put her
