Biographical Note about the Author, Max Alphonse Cineus Max Alphonse Cineus was born and raised in Haiti, where he lived until the year 1980. Haiti is geographically located in the Caribbean. Many people traveled to the Caribbean islands every year. The Caribbean islands are one of the most exciting places to travel in the world. One of these islands in the Caribbean Sea is the island of Hispaniola, which is shared by both the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Hispaniola has a good record of history, special resources, and very beautiful sites to visit. The general facts, history, and culture all affect the ways of this country. The country of Haiti is situated in the Caribbean Sea, which is just south of the Gulf of Mexico. The capital is Port-au-Prince, which is located very close to the island of La Gonave. Haiti’s culture is very much like the French. In fact, Haiti is the only Latin American country where the culture is French. The first language is French, but another common language that is spoken there is Creole. Many of the people speak Creole because the French settlers introduced this language to them. Creole is a mix of French and is the native language that spoken on the island. Max left Haiti in the 1980s and immigrated to Montreal (Canada) to study agronomics/agriculture. After a year in 1981, he moved to the United States. There, he lived in Brooklyn, New York, from 1981 to 2000. From 2000 to 2005, Max had moved to Queens, where he lived in this city with all his nuclear family. While writing this book, Max is currently living in East Vineland after moving from Galloway, New Jersey, in the year 2008.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

T HIS BOOK IS MY FIRST INSPIRATION as a writer. I have appreciated the positive and negative criticisms from my readers and especially my students and colleagues who encouraged me to make this dream a reality. I thank iUniverse for their expertise and knowledge in the art of publication.

This book would not have been possible without the support of many people. I wish to express my gratitude to my late mother, Philomene Dorcelon, who passed on July 27, 1997. She was the rainbow of my clouds and the engine of my life. Without her invaluable assistance and care, I would not be in this world, and this book would not have been possible. I love you, Mom, and thanks for bringing me up in this world. Requiescat in pace.

I also dedicate this book to my late father, Meres Cineus, whom I never met because I was about four years old when he left this world. May his soul rest peacefully!

My family guided me to light. My wife, Edith Cineus, gave me a life of love and sincere affection. To Kesha and Edwin, our two great kids, are always there to inspire in us joy, happiness, and sincere advice. I want to express my love and gratitude for their understanding and endless love through the completion of this book. I give special kudos to my siblings. I am referring to my dear sisters, Iphigenie and Arlette, whom I love from the bottom of my heart.

Lastly, I offer my regards and blessings to all of those who supported me in any respect during the completion of this book. I wish to give reverence and thanks to all my students and the most caring and outstanding teacher in the profession, Mrs. Linda Westbrook.

    INTRODUCTION

T HIS BOOK IS THE VIBRANT SOUND bell that starts ringing to alert the poor people that there is hope for them and that their sufferings are not everlasting. A miracle from heaven is still possible to change egoism and hatred in this world.

This book examines how the concept of poverty has developed. What accounts for its persistence, and what measures can be taken to eliminate or reduce it? What is poverty? Poverty is a lack—for example, of food, money, clothing, decent housing, education, material possessions, and even friendship and good relationships with others.

We are living in a perplexing world in which abject poverty afflicts about one-fifth of the world’s population. The poor people do not revolt. They have chosen instead some ways to adopt, survive, and cope with their current situations. They are very resilient, and they never raise their voices to question, Why not a better life? To fully
