    Y oung Anneese Beasley lived in a home with her dysfunctional family. She didn’t have a relationship with her mother, and her father worked constantly. Her mother drank a lot but hadn’t been professionally diagnosed as an alcoholic. They lived in a ranch-style house with a large back yard in Atlanta, Georgia. Anneese carried a doll around that her mother couldn’t stand. Anneese wanted to have a relationship with her mother, but her mother and father fought a lot at night, so she had only her doll to talk to and trust.

    LIFE ISN’T WHAT IT SEEMS

    A nneese got up early, wanting to eat breakfast. She called for her mother, but her mother ignored her. After several attempts to get her mother’s attention, her mother finally scuffed to the kitchen in her robe, revealing parts of her body and a cigarette in one hand. She handed a box of cereal to Anneese and then shoved her to the refrigerator to get the milk. Her mother grabbed the doll that Anneese clutched under her arm and threw it in the corner. Her mother shared no words, only evil glares.

    After eating, Anneese picked up her Thomasina doll and went outside. She walked, played, and talked with her doll until she felt that her Thomasina doll was not mad anymore for being thrown in the corner. As she eased to the back door to go inside, her mother met her and began yelling at her for having the doll again. She grabbed the doll from Anneese’s hand and ordered her to go to her room. As she passed her mother, Anneese noticed a strong smell of wet rust and cigarette smoke. Anneese, Neesy for short, lay in her bed, crying and praying for God to protect her doll.

    She suddenly heard her father coming into the house. She wanted so badly to tell him that her mother had taken Thomasina, but they started talking loudly. Before Neesy knew it, it was nighttime. She quietly tiptoed toward the kitchen, stopped to look in the living room, and saw her mother lying on the sofa. One leg was hanging off the sofa as if she were about to get up.

    Neesy, being a brave soul, decided to get some more cereal. She had missed dinner and was hungry. The refrigerator seemed so high to climb for a seven-year-old. She figured the counter would be the only way to get on top of the refrigerator. Once on top of a chair and then the counter, she could reach the cereal.

    Suddenly she saw her doll’s hair. Neesy wanted to rescue her, but she didn’t want to get in trouble, so she quickly climbed down. For the rest of the night, she thought about how she would rescue Thomasina without her mother seeing her. Before morning, she came out of her room and climbed on top of the counter. She brought Thomasina to her room and made her promise to be good and not talk or be seen when her mother was around.

    *     *     *

    For several nights, Neesy wanted to make her mother and father stop arguing. But she was only a little girl, and she could share her thoughts and feelings only with Thomasina. Whenever her father would come home late at night, her mother would start yelling, then her father would start. This particular night a weird silence occurred for a few minutes. Then she heard the front door opening. Several thoughts ran through her head. Are they going to leave me? Are they going outside to talk?

    She jumped out of bed and ran to the window. Her mother kept pulling on her father, yelling at him. When he turned around, he pointed something at her. Neesy heard a loud noise that sounded like the firecrackers that they played with on the Fourth of July. Smoke came from the thing that her father pointed. Her mother’s body fell to the ground hard. Neesy just watched as her father got into the car and drove away. Thomasina called her to the room. Just get into bed! Thomasina said. Neesy climbed into bed and told Thomasina everything that she had seen. She asked Thomasina not to tell anybody because her mother would wake up and be mad.
