DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my parents, Bani Sen and Late Sunil Chandra Sen, who have always been and will always be my inspiration in life.
PREFACE
There is a growing need for doctors in already developed countries of the world. The USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand have all recently experienced a shortage of homegrown doctors employed within their national health services. Thus more and more of these services are turning to overseas medical graduates to fulfil their need of doctors. For overseas doctors, working in these countries provides them a better quality of lifestyle. It also gives them the opportunity to receive better training in specialized fields. The ease of modern travel means that overseas employment opportunities are far easier to come by, and this is a key reason why the number of foreign medical staff has increased so dramatically across the globe.
This book gives an overview of the geography, culture and economy of the USA, a guidance on how to enter US healthcare system, medical registration, immigration regulations, ECFMG & USMLE examinations, postgraduate medical training & specialization, residency and post residency and all relevant links to essential web sites. All essential information is collected, collated and assimilated systematically for you. Thus it will save overseas doctors an enormous amount of time, which could be better spent preparing for ECFMG/USMLE examinations and interviews. This book contains comprehensive collection of all the necessary information that overseas doctors will need to work within the USA.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I am highly grateful to the group of international medical graduates whose inspiration and motivation helped me to write this book. This would never have been possible without you.
I am also grateful to all my friends in USA, who have provided me with relevant up-to-date information to practice medicine in the USA.
INTRODUCTION
It can be discouraging to read headlines such as one from The New York Times
in 2013 which indicated that the: Path to United States Practice is Long Slog to Foreign Doctors
.
The article opens with the following comment:
Thousands of foreign-trained immigrant physicians are living in the United States with lifesaving skills that are going unused because they stumbled over one of the many hurdles in the path toward becoming a licensed doctor here.
Your Pathways
Fortunately, this handbook is designed to help you avoid any and all such hurdles
in your own path to the medical profession.
Naturally, any discussion of hurdles and serious impediments to success force many potential IMGs
(international medical graduates) to wonder if there is even a point to going through the often challenging processes required to practice medicine in the United States. After all, medical industry statistics show that one in four doctors currently working in the U.S. had to go abroad to get training.
If American students are going outside of their own borders to get training, why should an immigrant physician make the effort? It helps to understand precisely why the students opt to get training elsewhere.
• Firstly, it is the high cost of a medical degree at an American college or University.
• Second, is because there are not enough seats in medical schools for those hoping to get training and certification. Nor are there enough residencies in chosen specialties for a lot of the potential students.
• Third, there are the demands put upon students of all levels, and these are considered to be very high and challenging due to American licensing standards.
Naturally, it can make it much easier, cheaper, and faster to head outside of the States to get training. However, even when that American student returns to practice their trade in their own country, they may have to still go through the same certification and licensing requirements of immigrant physicians.
Ultimately, every single physician in the United States (regardless of where they initially trained) has to do a proper residency and get the Board Certification necessary for their chosen area of practice. They must do this following a rigorous set of guidelines and requirements. Though this is difficult, it does result in a truly optimized level of skill and experience.
The Benefits of Meeting the Challenges
So, the international medical graduate - IMG - willing to run the gauntlet of requirements is going to certainly obtain a very comprehensive education and be able to put their certification to use almost anywhere else
