For Tabitha – my sweetheart and best friend for seventeen years. Every day when I got home from work you brought me a pinecone (like in this picture) a stick, a stone, or whatever you could find near the driveway. Occasionally, when I’d forgotten (or I thought you’d forgotten), after we were in the house you’d spit out a small stone onto the kitchen floor for me, a reminder of your persistent love and dedication.

In life you taught me more about love than anyone; and in death you taught me more about grief and loss than anyone.

I know I’ll feel your love again one day; maybe I’m feeling it already.

    Introduction

    Life is easy: Assume responsibility!

Everything I’ve done, and every road I’ve taken has brought me to where I am today (and since this is where I am, there is no sense in hypothesizing about having made different decisions, or assigning blame). Everything I do and every road I take will deliver me to my future. I can’t mess it up because the destination is irrelevant. Experience life while I have it, the good and the bad, that’s really all I have to do.

In life we fall into the trap of seeing Physical Reality as the foundation of our being, but Physical Reality is not the cornerstone of existence. Reality is born in imagination; that which we see is merely our interpretation of that which is.

Never confuse what is perceived to be with what is.

By continuing to focus our attention on our perception of Physical Reality to the exclusion of the Non-Physical energy that exists in all things everywhere, we are discounting our existence and the purpose of our lives.

In the coming chapters we will explore the traps that our ego sets for us to keep us grounded in Physical Reality based fear and prevents us from achieving the blessings of self-fulfillment, happiness and peace.

(Understanding Death is a free pamphlet available at www.patrickbaxter.com. Please pass it on to anyone for whom it may alleviate the fear of death.)

This whole journey started with a lady who came into my bookstore in 2007 and asked for a book on dealing with death. I showed her several books
