    Chapter One

A S SHE STOOD THERE on the side of that dark highway, all Carina Rosario could think of were those horror movies about serial killers. She shook her head, thinking she had watched too many of those silly crime shows. She looked back at her car that had yet again left her stranded, just this time it was on a long stretch of dark highway coming home from a long conference in Washington DC. She had figured it would be a decent and easy trip back, but she had ended up in a line of traffic for hours due to an accident on the freeway that put her still driving at such a late hour.

Carina decided to pop the hood and start her usual shaking of wires and banging on parts of her engine. This normally worked for her when her old Honda would just die out on her, but tonight it wasn’t budging one bit. She gave one last bang out of aggravation and still nothing. She looked up from under the hood to see a pair of headlights headed toward her. She felt both a little scared and happy at the same time at the sight. These headlights could be a helpful hand or, like the movies, a tragic ending for her life. With all these thoughts racing through her mind, she almost hadn’t realized that a man had stopped and already gotten out of the truck in front of her until he said, Do you need some help, ma’am?

She nodded her head yes and replied, I’m sorry, yes, my car has decided to die out here in the middle of nowhere. She nervously chuckled.

Let me see what I can find out with her for you and see if we can’t get her back up and running. Carina noticed how polite he was and clean cut and slightly relaxed. The thoughts of movies still running through her mind and her guard still up, she watched him toil with her engine for several moments.

He finally looked up. It looks like you have a short in a wire somewhere along your line from the starter to the engine. It’s too hard for me to see out here tonight, so if you like, I can drive you into town and tow your car behind my truck. But I suggest you get someone to repair that soon. Feeling a little uneasy about getting in a truck with a stranger, she nodded and retrieved her purse from her car. He pulled a tow rope out of the toolbox on his truck and connected it to her car. After connecting the car to the truck, he opened the door for her and helped her up into his truck. He climbed in next to her and started down the highway toward town. What part of town are you headed toward? he asked.

I’m headed into the south side of town on Bower Street. Are you familiar with that part of town? she asked.

Sure am. How long have you been around these parts?

I moved here two months ago from Colorado with my job. This area is really nice, which is making the transition pretty easy. Carina sat silently for a little ways next to the strange man with numerous thoughts running through her head and thanking God he had come along when he had, and almost hadn’t heard him speak.

I’m Jackson by the way, and you are? he asked.

I’m sorry, how rude of me. I’m Carina. Nice to meet you, Jackson. What were you doing out here, if you don’t mind me asking, that is.

I was just taking a drive. He seemed kind of short, and she didn’t ask any more about what he was doing out in this desolate area at such an hour. When they finally pulled into her neighborhood, she guided him to her house and was glad to see lights still on.

Thank you so much, Jackson, for pulling my car home for me. Let me give you some money for your help. She started to dig in her purse to see how much cash she had on her when he stopped her.

Don’t worry about it, ma’am. I wouldn’t want any of my family out there stranded in the middle of the night. Just make sure you have someone fix that before you get out there driving again and break down. He shook her hand, went back to his truck, and untied her car. Good night.

Good night, Jackson. Thank you again for your help. With that, he was in his truck and driving away, back to wherever he had come from. Carina turned and walked toward the house, just glad to be home and able to relax finally. She looked at the house as she walked toward it, feeling a mixture of emotions. It was a beautiful two-story brick house she had recently purchased. It was cozy, and the kids loved it, yet she missed the old apartment and the memories.

She went in and headed right for the kitchen to set her stuff down and pour herself a glass of wine, feeling the stress of the day of travel and the car breaking down. Once she had her wine, she headed into the living room to sit in her chair by the fireplace and relax.

Long day? she heard from behind her. Yes. Long boring speeches and fifty million questions about my plans for this office and where did I come from. It’s like they never met a new person before. Then my car broke down again on the way back just to add insult to injury. I am really thinking it’s time to trade it in for a newer and more stable car, she replied.

You always say that every time that hunk of junk breaks down. Maybe for once you should actually go and trade it in. Sorry you had a long day with the meetings and nosy people though. Her sister, Lucy, had heard her say this many times before.

Thanks. Well, I am off this weekend for once, so I guess car shopping we go. I really wanted to do something more special with the boys, but maybe we’ll have time after car shopping. How were the boys today?

The usual craziness of little boys. She chuckled. Devin was running around Dante in circles and torturing him, then they were screaming at each other and fighting over toys. I tell you, those boys are nonstop energy. I just wish they would share a portion of that energy with me!

I wish I had some of it too, just even an ounce. I just can’t wait to be settled in finally in this office so that I can start taking more time for them and less time traveling. Thank you for all your help while I’m getting settled in. I’m glad you decided to move out here with us, Lucy. I’d be lost without you here to watch them. Carina hated to leave the boys with strange people she wasn’t sure she could trust.

You know I love the boys, and I wouldn’t leave you in a strange city without any help. Wait, so how did you get home if the car broke down? Did it start back up as usual, or did you get help? Lucy always overworried about her little sister.

There was a man who came along and towed me home. I was scared to death out there on that dark stretch on the way into town, when all of a sudden I saw him pull up. I was almost shaking. I was so frightened it was some serial killer pulling up.

I can’t believe you would just get into a stranger’s vehicle like that, Carina! What if he had done something to you? We would never have known. You know better!

Calm down! I was perfectly fine, and he was very polite and sincere in wanting to help. I wouldn’t just get into a vehicle with just any kind of crazy-looking person. He was dressed decent and talked with a slight Southern accent. Carina couldn’t help but think of how nice looking Jackson had been and how sweet. Yet she was also wondering why he was so short when she asked what he was doing out there so late when Lucy interrupted her thoughts.

You still never know, Carina. Some serial killers do dress very well and talk very sweet. We are definitely getting you another car this weekend. In the meantime, use mine since I’m home all day with the boys when you are at work.

Okay, thank you, Lucy. I promise I won’t get into any more trucks with strange men. You don’t have to worry about me so much, you know. I am a big girl now, not the little one anymore. Being the youngest of five, Carina had always been looked out for by the older four for fear their mother would have whooped their butts.

I know, I know. You are still my little sister though, and I’m always going to look out for you. So did you get his name or even his number? Carina saw the smile in Lucy’s eyes when she asked.

No! Why would I get his number? I mean, I did get his name, but I wasn’t out trying to pick up a man, you know. She hadn’t even thought about dating since she had lost Antonio two years ago. She knew he had been that one love of her life, and she still didn’t see dating anyone else. Sure she noticed men looking at her, and she noticed some were attractive, but that was it.

Lucy was laughing at her outrage of her question. I was just asking in case he was a mechanic or something. Don’t get all worked up, little sis. Sheesh!

Sure, Lucy, that is exactly why you were asking if I got his number. He didn’t offer to fix it, but he seemed to know what he was talking about when he told me what was wrong.

Maybe he just didn’t like you, dear, and didn’t want to have to see you again. Lucy was doubled over she was laughing so hard. It felt so good to Carina to hear laughter in the house again.

Okay, Lucy, keep it up and I’ll have to smack you around.

Yeah, like that will happen! With that, Carina threw a pillow off the chair at her and got her.

Oh, that is so not right, Carina! I will get even with you for that when you least expect it. But for now, I’m tired, so I’m headed off to bed. Get some rest for once instead of sitting up all night with your paperwork, okay?

Yes, ma’am! She saluted Lucy like a soldier saluting his sergeant and laughed as she walked away. Lucy gave her a dirty look and rolled her eyes as she walked up the stairs.

Carina sat back sipping on her wine, thinking about the day’s meetings and the new routines she was going to have to implement at her office the next day. Since she had come to Maryland, it seemed as if it had been nonstop reorganizing of this office. The gentleman who had her position had been terminated, and she had begun to realize why. There was no organization to any of his paperwork, and the employees had no direction. She shook her head and tried to force work out of her mind and relax. It was something she continued to have problems doing even after being with Thompsons for over six years.

She started to finally relax and dosed off sitting in her chair. As she dosed off, the same haunting images started to flutter through her dreams and make her upset in her sleep. She must have been yelling in her sleep because she felt someone shaking her arm suddenly. She jumped with a start from her sleep and realized Lucy was standing over her looking confused. What happened? Carina finally sputtered out.

You were screaming and shouting out Antonio’s name like you were scared. I could hear you all the way upstairs. Carina could see she looked really concerned.

I’m sorry, Lucy. I was having this dream about him again. I just keep having this dream about him over there and going through these buildings, and then there are explosions and gunfire, and I normally wake up. But this time it was different: I saw it happen, Lucy! Carina was crying uncontrollably and shaking in Lucy’s arms.

It’s okay, baby, calm down. It’s going to be okay. Lucy was crying with her little sister, not even able to slightly understand how she must feel and what it was like to lose Antonio at such a young age. He had been twenty-eight when he died overseas in Iraq. Antonio had joined the army right out of high school wanting to provide for his soon-to-be wife and one day family. Always a smart kid, a class clown, and loved by everyone, she understood why Carina had held on to him all through school and married him. The tragedy was that she lost him ten years later. The boys being so young made it harder on Carina, and Lucy stayed by her side since that day.

I miss him, Lucy! Why did God take him away from me? I need him here. The boys need him here to watch them grow up and teach them manly things. Carina knew it would someday be easier, but after two years, the nightmares still hadn’t gone away. The boys still woke up from time to time calling for him, though not as often lately. She dreamed almost nightly the same dreams of him overseas at war. She would never forget the night she opened her door to the two high-ranking officers who informed her that her husband had died fighting for his country. She’d never forget falling to her knees praying to God it was a mistake or hearing his mother behind her gasp and start crying. She had been visiting to check on Carina and the boys while they were alone on base.

The funeral had been filled with all the normal military events, and many soldiers were there to say their good-byes. They all came to give her their sympathies and share memories with her. For weeks to come after the funeral, people still brought her food or came by to check on her and give her their condolences, when all she wanted was Antonio to be on the doorstep every time she answered her door. It never happened, and Carina eventually had to move off base. Lucy had opened her home to her and the boys and been by her side through it all.

Eventually it got a little easier to go to work every day, but after two years, Carina wanted a change of scenery. She wanted to stop seeing Antonio everywhere she went and stop seeing his fellow soldiers. So when the office came open in Maryland, she jumped at the opportunity. Loretta, Antonio’s mother, hadn’t wanted to see her go further away but understood. She told her she even thought it was for the best that she start a new life somewhere that didn’t remind her so much of him. Loretta understood how hard it was for her to be around all the places and people that reminded her of him.

I will come see you and the boys often, Carina. Just do what you need to do for the boys and yourself. Loretta had always been a second mom to her, and she was thankful for her understanding.

Lucy interrupted her thoughts then. He’s not gone, sweetie, and he will always be in your heart and watching over you and the boys. God will take care of you, and he has a plan for you that maybe you don’t understand right now, but you will one day. I know in my heart that Antonio wouldn’t want you to be so sad and putting yourself through this with these dreams. I think you should find someone to talk to about these dreams. It would help.

I know you are probably right, Lucy, but at the same time, I just don’t see talking to someone helping me get over this pain I feel every night I lie alone in that bed. Or the pain I feel when I look at the boys and know their dad isn’t here to teach them how to be funny like he was or to be the smart one or play sports. I know it will get easier, but it doesn’t take away how much I miss his smile or the times we spent talking and laughing. She paused for a moment, thinking of the old days before he left for Iraq and the jokes he used to play on her. Maybe Lucy was right and it was time to talk to someone about the thoughts in her head. Okay, Lucy, I’ll look into someone to talk to about everything. Maybe someone in my office knows of a grief counselor or therapist.

I just know that I can’t imagine the pain you are feeling, and I’ve never been through it, so I don’t feel I have answers for you enough to help you. I mean, I’m always going to listen and hold you when you need a shoulder to cry on.

Thanks, Lucy. I’m glad you’re my big sister, she said, hugging her. Let’s get some real sleep. I’m headed up to bed myself this time, and I promise I’ll try not to wake you anymore tonight. She hugged Lucy and started up the stairs behind her to attempt some real sleep for once.

Yet when Carina lay back down, it was the same dreams all over again. She dreamed of Antonio in a tiny desert town with old run-down buildings all around him. There were locals walking around and carrying on their daily lives as if nothing was going on. She was standing so close to him she could feel his body heat. She was trying to reach out to him and take his hand when everything suddenly became a blur, and the earth shook. Buildings started to crumple, and people were flying past her while she was still just standing in the middle of the street. It was so realistic and surreal, yet it was like she knew in her dream that she was dreaming. Suddenly she realized that Antonio was standing beside her still looking at her with that gorgeous smile of his.

Don’t worry, my love, you will be okay. He spoke it so calmly and lovingly as if they were at home.

How do I continue on without you, Toni? There were tears streaming down her face as she asked him, not understanding how he could be so calm.

I’m always here for you, love. And with that, he was shot and lying on the street at her feet.

Carina sprang up in bed and sat there crying uncontrollably for a while. She just didn’t understand why the dreams were getting so more real and detailed. This was the first dream she had ever had that he actually spoke to her and told her that she would be okay. What could all this mean? She wasn’t one to believe in ghosts or hidden messages in dreams from the dead, but these dreams were starting to really freak her out.

I’ve got to seek therapy! She was talking to herself, but she realized at the same time that Devin was standing just inside her door quietly crying. Are you okay, Devin?

I heard you calling Daddy. I miss him, Mommy. It was so heartbreaking when the boys cried for him.

I know, baby, come here. She sat there holding her six-year-old son, trying to comfort him and understand why God would do this to them. Come on, baby, I’ll make you some breakfast before school.

They headed out to the kitchen and started making breakfast and coffee together. She let him crack the eggs in the bowl and stir while she got out the bacon and bread. Then she took over stirring and started the stove going. Everything was about ready when she heard Dante come wandering into the kitchen and sit down at the table. Even being only eight, he was already a mini version of Antonio. Antonio used to joke that Dante was his mini me and do the evil finger to his lips.

You got home late last night, Mom. I didn’t even hear you come in. I was worried about you. Did something go wrong at your meeting? Dante was more of a worrier since his dad passed away, and she understood his concern.

No, it was just a long meeting, and the car broke down again on my way home. I was fine, baby, and this weekend we are going to go car shopping with Aunt Lucy for a new car for us. How does that sound to you two? She was trying to cheer up their morning a little.

Both boys cried out and started dancing around the kitchen as if they were doing a victory dance or something. She couldn’t help but laugh and join in with them. The three of them were mid victory dance when Lucy came walking in, shaking her head at them all. Don’t let me interrupt. I just need my coffee. Laughing, she got her coffee and took over finishing the eggs and making plates.

Thanks, sis, I need my cup of coffee still. Carina made her cup and put some notes in her briefcase she had been working on at home.

Sit and eat some breakfast before you rush off to that office. It’s not healthy to not eat something in the morning. Lucy always lectured her about her eating since Carina had dropped too much weight after Antonio’s death. She hadn’t seemed to be hungry and was always so upset that her stomach would get upset when she actually did manage to eat something.

Yes, dear! I will take a small amount. I’m not very hungry this morning, and I need to get into the office early. She checked her watch and sat down with the boys.

Aunt Lucy, did Mom tell you we’re going car shopping this weekend? She’s finally getting rid of the ugly car. They all looked at Devin, and all they could do was laugh.

Yes, Devin, we discussed it last night when Mommy got home so late because that ugly one broke down again.

Now stop hating on my Honda! It’s last me over ten years, I’ll have you know, and it’s been paid for most of that time. I just didn’t see going to buy a new car because it was old.

Can we get a sports car? Dante asked.

No, dear, that’s just not practical for all of us. I was thinking more along the lines of a small SUV or minivan. She figured this way it was easier for her to travel in.

Dante was the first to speak up. I vote no minivan, Mom! That’s just not a cool car, and my friends would laugh at me.

Well, Dante, it’s not about what your friends think. What matters is what we think and what is practical in price range. I was kind of leaning toward an SUV, but we’ll see when we go this weekend. Okay?

I guess. He sat looking kind of disgusted eating his breakfast.

I don’t mind a minivan, Mom, if that’s what you want, said Devin.

Well, thank you, baby. I’m glad you approve of whatever I decide on for us to drive. Now let’s finish up and get you two on the bus.

Are you putting us on the bus today, Mom? Both boys were looking at her excited.

You know what, I think I will. The office can be okay with me getting there just on time today instead of early. She didn’t get to see them off on the bus very often, and since she wasn’t expected early, she figured why not spend the extra half hour with her sons.

Awesome! they both screamed in unison, and she smiled at them. It was moments like this that made her feel like life was getting better for all of them and more normal.

They finished up breakfast, and Carina helped Lucy clean up the kitchen while the boys got their backpacks ready.

Thanks for the help, but don’t worry about the rest. You only have a few minutes before that bus gets here, so you get going.

Thanks, Lucy, I appreciate it. I’ll try to be home earlier tonight, and maybe we can even all sit down to dinner together. I’ll call you during the day and let you know when I’ll be home.

That would be great if you were home for dinner. If you can’t, don’t stress about it. The boys and I will keep a plate warm for you. She knew Carina stressed a lot when she didn’t get to spend enough time with the boys. It was like she was trying to give them extra time to make up for their dad not being there.

I love you, Lucy. You are so amazing to me. I’ll see you tonight, sis.

With that, she was out the door with the boys to get them on the bus and her to the office. They got to the end of the drive in perfect time for the bus to come, and she gave them hugs before they left. It felt so nice to be putting them on the bus for once. She waved and got in the car and headed to the office.

As soon as Carina got into the office, her assistant handed her a pile of messages and mail from the day before.

How did the meetings go in DC yesterday? Was it boring, or did they actually come up with some good ideas? Sarah was a great help to Carina, but she was also very hyper and talkative at times.

They were long and boring, yet they did have some good ideas, and I got the chance to mingle with my colleagues in this area. We have our hands full with this area though, and they haven’t been happy with our production over here. So I have a lot of work to do today so I can get home at a decent time. Please hold all my calls. Just tell them I’m in meetings. Unless it’s my sister or sons, I am off-limits today. Thanks, Sarah. Carina headed into her office and closed the door. Her goal was to be home in time for dinner, so she dug in right away into her messages and mail. She started by returning calls while doing some paperwork. A couple of calls were to clients that had been upset with her predecessor. She called them and introduced herself and assured them that matters would from here on out be dealt with in a proper business manner. They all seemed to calm down and appreciate her guarantee, and that made her thankful. The fewer problems she had, the better for her.

She started to look through the stack of mail that had been left waiting for her, and she sighed. It seemed that she got more mail from people writing because they were unhappy with this office than the amount of junk mail! Suddenly a letter in a simple envelope got her attention. The return address had no name; just an address from Iraq was there. She dropped the letter and sat back looking at it as if it were anthrax ridden. Who on earth would be writing to her from Iraq? She didn’t know of anyone she knew being over there right now, though she had lost contact with most of Antonio’s fellow soldiers. She decided to set the letter in her purse for later and continued on with work.

When she finally looked up at the clock, it was already four forty-five. She knew it would take her a little bit to get home in rush hour, so she packed up her briefcase with some work for home and went to leave.

Sarah, I’m headed home. You can catch me on my cell if anything should arise before you go home. I will e-mail you some research tonight that I need for you to assist me with.

Not a problem. It’s nice to see you getting out of here at a decent hour for once! Sarah already knew from the two months that Carina had been there that she tended to throw herself too much into her work.

Yes, it’s nice to be going home for dinner with the boys for once. I’ll see you in the morning.

On her drive home, she remembered the mysterious letter in her purse. She just couldn’t imagine who would be writing to her from overseas. Different thoughts came to mind about who it could be. Maybe it was someone who had just found out about Antonio, or it could even be someone threatening her or the kids. She dismissed the second idea because it was ridiculous so far after his death. This letter was bringing back so many memories of Antonio, and Carina began to feel so alone, but she still just couldn’t see dating some strange man.

She pulled up to the house and sat in her car for a moment debating reading the letter before she went in. Then she saw the boys running out the house, excited to see her home early. Hey, guys, how was your day? she asked, getting out of the car.

They both started talking at once all excitedly, and she laughed because she couldn’t make sense of either one of them! Okay, okay, let’s go inside, and then you can both take turns telling me how your day was.

Lucy had made a wonderful dinner, and they sat down together as a family. The boys told her about projects at school, friends, and games they were into on the Wii. It was a wonderful evening of just quality time that Carina had been missing since arriving in Maryland.

After the boys headed off to bed, she headed into the den and worked on some paperwork for a while. Lucky for Sarah, Carina hadn’t needed to call and bother her after all. By the end of the night, she felt like she was finally making progress toward some order at work. She was so thankful there was only one day left of work till the weekend. She was hoping to be able to get car shopping done on Saturday so that the four of them could go to the park on Sunday and maybe go ice skating at the ice rink. She stretched and decided her body was too tired to do any more tonight.

As she walked past the living room, she saw Lucy still up watching TV. What’s up, Lucy? You okay?

I couldn’t sleep. Had too much on my mind tonight, and it just won’t cut me a break to fall asleep. She looked exhausted.

Okay, talk to me, Lucy. Did something happen? Carina was concerned at how her sister looked. Lucy was always the upbeat and cheerful one of the two of them. Normally it was Lucy asking her what was wrong and giving her advice.

Just feeling a frustrated with this latest book I’m working on. It’s like I know what I want to write, but when I sit down with my laptop, it’s gone. My publicist is on me to get this done in the next two months, and I just don’t see it happening if I don’t get past this mental block. Then to top it all off, John has decided he doesn’t want to move out here, he doesn’t want this relationship, and he has decided to see other people. I guess I should have seen this coming, but I was hoping for the best. John hadn’t been overly excited about moving to Maryland when Lucy mentioned it in the first place. But then he hadn’t been excited about anything with her in a long time.

Lucy, I am so sorry to have dragged you out here, and if I am the cause for you and John splitting up, I am even sorrier. If you need to go back to Colorado, I would completely understand. I’m sure the boys don’t help you to concentrate on your book either. We are quite the distraction for you here, and I don’t want to keep you from being happy. Carina suddenly felt so awful for letting Lucy come across the country with them and away from her own life.

You can’t get rid of me that easily, young lady! The boys do not distract me from my book, and neither do you and your craziness. I’m my own worst enemy when it comes to my writing sometimes. As far as John goes, it’s okay. I’ll be fine without him. It was a lovely two years, but we were having problems before I left. He was starting to not be so understanding of my vow of abstinence, and he didn’t want to get married yet. We are obviously not equally yoked. I’d rather be out here with you and my nephews than out there with a man who doesn’t appreciate my values or love me enough to marry me.

I am definitely proud of you for sticking to your vow of abstinence. I made that vow when Antonio passed on. I still just can’t imagine being with anyone but him. I know that if and when God feels I’m ready, he’ll bless me with the right man. If I’m not meant to have another man in my life, I will be just fine by myself. Listen, Lucy, seriously, if you need a break or time to yourself to write, don’t hesitate to let me know, and I will work it out with my schedule. I should be able to be home earlier starting in the very near future.

Don’t worry about me, Carina. I don’t need a break from my nephews at all. They are a big help with my writing because they help take my mind off of things for a bit, and then I get back at it with a little less stress. Besides, I usually write while they are in school or at night in my room. The boys were more than nephews to Lucy, they were her best buddies.

Well, the offer is always there if you decide at some point you need a break. I’m off to bed. I’m so exhausted I was struggling to finish my paperwork. You better get to bed soon and get some rest. Those boys will be going full force tomorrow for you! She laughed and hugged her big sis before heading up to bed. Night, Lucy.

Good night, don’t let the bedbugs bite! They both laughed, and Carina went up to bed.

    Chapter Two

C ARINA WOKE UP SATURDAY morning ready to get on their way to find her a new car that wouldn’t leave her stranded. Lucy had been right; it was long overdue to be traded in. She had that Honda since high school and just loved it. That is till it started to break down all the time. Before, Antonio had been there to fix all the minor problems and give it a tune-up, but now he was gone. Now though, it was time for Carina to let go of the car and some of the history it reminded her of.

It had been a long week at work, and her mind had been on Antonio since that nightmare sitting in her chair, and she needed the distraction. Being so excited about the idea of a new car, she went downstairs and started making some eggs and pancakes for Lucy and the boys since Lucy did most of the cooking through the week. Lucy came groggily down the stairs at the smell of coffee brewing. Is it my birthday or something? she asked with a smirk. No, silly, just thought it would be nice to start our day with a good breakfast, Carina replied.

That’s right, it’s finally car shopping day. Do you have any particular type of car in mind to trade it in for?

Not really a specific one, but I think I’d like to stick with Honda. This Honda held up over ten years, so I feel good about Hondas. I did see a Dodge that looked kind of new age and interesting looking, but some of the people in my office agreed Hondas were longer lasting.

I agree. I think I remember seeing a dealership on the other side of the bridge that we can go check out first. See what price ranges are we looking at and what fits in your budget. Have you even thought up what your budget is? You know you want to have a price range in your head before you go and what amount you can handle.

I really hadn’t even thought up my price range yet on either. I haven’t had to worry about a car payment in so long! I guess after breakfast I’ll sit down and look at the budget and see what I can afford each month. She had been so wrapped up in work that she honestly didn’t think about the bill she was adding to her monthly budget.

Just then they heard the feet hit the floor running, and soon after the boys came running down the stairs. We’re hungry! they shouted in unison. Okay, okay, the food is almost ready. Sit down at the table and relax for a minute.

Through breakfast, they all talked and laughed about the car, and even the boys couldn’t wait to see which car their mom picked out. Can you buy us a really cool sports car so the other kids will be jealous this year? Dante asked excitedly.

No, I cannot. We already discussed that, Dante. There is no point in trying to impress anyone or make them jealous. God doesn’t like ugly, and trying to impress others to make them jealous is ugly. Carina saw the look Devin gave her about her usual saying. Do you have something to say, young man? Devin just shook his head and kept eating his breakfast.

You can’t blame the kid for trying, Carina! They both smiled because Lucy was right, you couldn’t blame the kid. He was an average little boy who wanted the kids to like him and think he was cool.

I tell you what, Dante, I will promise you this much, I won’t buy a minivan. Cool?

Cool. Those are so not cool! So what are we getting then?

I’m not quite sure yet. I have to sit down and budget what we can afford, and then we’ll do some shopping around to see what we can get in that price range.

Are you thinking a car again, or have you thought about maybe one of their SUVs? Lucy asked.

I was actually debating that in my mind. I really like their SUVs, but as far as gas goes, a car might be more economical. I actually paid three dollars and forty-five cents per gallon the other day.

You’ve got a point there. With all these issues overseas still and the way this world is, gas isn’t going down.

They finished breakfast quietly, both Lucy and Carina lost in their own thoughts. The boys finished up and asked to be excused to start getting ready. I’ll pick up, Carina, if you want to sit down and do your budget, Lucy offered.

Thanks, Lucy. She got up and went into the den and sat at her desk thinking for a minute. It was so strange to be buying a new car without Antonio. He helped her pick out her Honda, and they had taken a long drive after the dealership just enjoying their time together before he had to leave for field training. She remembered how hard it had been when he left for those two weeks and how she didn’t think she’d survive without him. Now look at me, she thought. Two years without the love of her life, her best friend, and her soul mate.

She sighed and pulled out her pad and started listing out the current bills and looking at her salary. With Lucy helping out with some of the bills, even though Carina didn’t want her to, she could afford a decent car payment. She also knew her insurance would go up slightly for full coverage, but she could handle it. Antonio would be so proud of her right now. She was being the adult and making smart decisions, a trait she hadn’t had when she was younger. She remembered the first time they ever talked about what she wanted to become when they graduated.

Carina, you have to have a goal for your future. You can’t just expect to float through life and prosper. This is our last year of high school, the year you decide your future plans. Are you looking at the colleges I told you about? he asked.

Toni, I just don’t know yet. I looked at the colleges for business management, but I’m just not sure that is my life goal. Not all of us can be like you. You know you want the military life, and you are set up with the army already. She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tight and just held on to him for a while. I can tell you the one thing I know I want for my future: you.

He smiled widely at her. You know I want you for my future also, babe. You still have to go to school though. For me? He knew her too well and how to work her.

Oh, when you ask like that, what else can I say but I’ll go to school! You are a tricky one, mister, but I love you. I promise I’ll start applying right away to some of the schools where you may be stationed. I don’t want to be far away from you.

And she had done just what she had promised. She started to apply to several colleges and even looked for grants and scholarships. She was accepted into Yorktown University School of Business. He had been so proud of her and excited when he was stationed near there. Now she was doing what he had wanted her to be doing: a job that she loved and supported her and her boys so they didn’t have to struggle.

Hey, you, are you about ready to hit the pavement? Lucy asked.

Yes, I’m ready to go spend some money and commit myself to a car payment. She laughed.

You okay? You looked a million miles away just then.

I was just thinking about Toni. It’s like these memories are consuming me lately. I don’t really understand what is making me think so much about the past right now. It’s weird. She wondered to herself if maybe he was trying to tell her something. She didn’t believe in ghosts much but did believe in heaven and eternal life.

Well, I’m sure you’ll work through it. However, my dear, the boys are loaded up in your junk car, and it is actually running. So before it dies out, let’s be out and get you a new car! They both laughed, and she grabbed her purse, and off they went.

They decided to start at the car lot that Lucy had suggested. Of course as soon as they got out of the car, the salesman came running. Welcome, ladies and young men, my name is Tom. Which lovely car would you be interested in today? He seemed nice enough, but they really didn’t want a salesman following them around.

Lucy spoke up first. We are doing fine today, Tom, but honestly we would like to look around on our own for a while and decide what will work best for her. I’ll let you know if we have any questions.

Not a problem, ladies. You just let me know when I can assist you with anything. You could plainly see that Tom wasn’t too thrilled with Lucy’s dismissal of him.

That wasn’t very nice, Lucy, Carina said laughing. She felt the same way but didn’t have the ability like Lucy to politely dismiss people.

I was polite as I could be to him. I don’t like salespeople following me around like a lost puppy dog.

The boys were laughing, and both women looked at them questioningly. What are you two laughing at? Carina asked.

Dante was the only one able to stop laughing to talk long enough to explain. Aunt Lucy said following her around like a lost puppy dog. Too funny!

They couldn’t help but laugh with the boys and how funny they thought her analogy was. They started walking around the lot, stopping here and there to look at a vehicle. After several cars, Lucy asked, You think any of these could be the one?

I really like the Honda Pilot we looked at. It’s not too bad of a price, spacious for when all of us go somewhere together and decent on gas. Plus if they work out a fair payment, I can handle it. Did you like it? Lucy’s opinion was the most important to her, so she always asked her for it.

Honestly? That was my first choice also for you. Not just for those reasons, but it’s safe and dependable for when you travel. So are you ready for Tom? They both smiled at how she put it.

Oh, I guess you can wave him on over here. They looked over at the sulking man waiting, and Lucy waved him over. He instantly had a smile and walked over to the Pilot they were back looking at.

Did we decide on the Pilot, ladies? He looked like a child getting a gift.

Well, Tom, that depends on what the men of our household think about the Pilot. She looked over at the boys who were beaming at her. So, men, what do you think? Should we get this one here or keep looking around for a different car?

They both looked at each other and in unison said, This one!

Mom, we would look so cool with you driving us around in this one, Devin said.

I agree with Devin! Dante added.

If you can get me into this with a low-enough payment, you’ve got a sale.

Well, let’s step into my office and crunch some number, get the paperwork done, and you ladies can drive out of here today in this beautiful automobile.

They followed him into the building, and Carina sat down with him to talk business and get the application filled out. Lucy took the boys to get a drink from the vending machine and play in the kids’ waiting area. Carina was excited to be getting this new car, but she was still sad to be letting go of the old one.

Is it going to be just your name on the application? he asked.

Yes, it’s just for me. Why, is there a problem? She was wondering if he saw something on her credit she didn’t know about.

No, not at all, Mrs. Rosario. I wasn’t sure if you wanted your husband on the car as well.

She was taken aback by his statement for a moment till she realized he was looking at her ring. She was so used to it being there that she forgot about it.

My husband is deceased, so no. It hurt her to say it, and she instantly saw the embarrassment in his face.

I am so sorry, ma’am. I shouldn’t have made an assumption off the ring. I hope I didn’t upset you. The poor guy made her feel bad.

It’s fine, Tom, and please call me Carina.

He went back to finishing up the application process and explained the payment plan to her along with her warranty on the vehicle. She was quite pleased with the amount she was looking at monthly because it was well under what her top amount had been. So she signed her name on the dotted line, and he handed her the keys.

Well, Carina, I hope that you and your family enjoy your new vehicle.

Thank you very much for all of your help. I am sad to see my old Honda go, but it was time to upgrade. I’m thankful to not have to worry about being stranded on the side of the road anymore. The mention of the last breakdown made her think of the nice guy that had helped her out.

I’m glad I was able to help you out. They shook hands and parted ways. Carina headed over to the kids’ area to gather her crew up. Lucy was coloring with the boys at one of the kids’ tables, and she looked so funny scrunched up in the little chair.

You look absolutely adorable in that little chair, Lucy, she said laughing.

Funny! I was having some fun coloring pictures for you with my buddies here. Be nice! She tried to look hurt.

Look what we colored for you, Mom! Devin was so proud to show her the picture.

I colored this one for you, Mommy, Dante said excitedly.

But look at my picture I colored for you, sissy poo! Lucy chided in with them.

Okay, you have lost it, sis! The pictures are wonderful, all of them. Who is ready to go for a drive in our brand-new car? she asked.

We are, we are! the boys shouted.

Can I drive? Lucy asked with a smile.

No way! I get to drive it first! They were all laughing at the silliness between the two.

I tell you what, let’s take a drive and find someplace extra special for lunch. My treat. How does that sound? Lucy asked.

Sounds like a great plan. Are you two up for a nice lunch somewhere special?

Um, Mom, we’re kids. Of course it sounds like a great plan, Dante said.

Both Lucy and Carina couldn’t help but laugh. Dante was and always had been a very exceptionally smart child.

Well, all right then, let’s get a move on it then, she said.

It felt so nice to be in a brand-new car driving down the highway. They all had their windows down and were jamming out to the radio. This was exactly what Toni would have done after driving off the lot with the new car. Just like when they had got her old Honda, they took a long drive. It was his way of celebrating with her. Even when they got married, they took the long way to reception, just the two of them in the limo. He always made things even better than what they were, just by being him.

What are you so smiley about? Lucy asked.

I didn’t realize I was so smiley. I was just thinking that this is exactly what Toni would have wanted to do after buying this car.

And just why do you think I suggested this? Lucy knew too well that this was what Toni would have wanted her to do with Carina. Her brother-in-law had been the most calm, happy, charming, and romantic man she had ever met. And the funny part was that he hadn’t even been her man. All the men she had relationships with had never come close to Antonio. Maybe that was why she had yet to get married. She was never jealous of what Carina and Antonio had, just happy for them.

You are the best sister I could have ever hoped for, Lucy. She smiled at her big sister.

Well, lucky for you they had another girl besides you! Otherwise, you would have gotten stuck with four brothers and no sister. They both laughed at that very true statement.

You are absolutely right. You know, it’s been months since I’ve seen John, Paul, and Isaac. We should all plan a vacation together with all of the kids. It would be awesome to see everyone. She was excited just thinking about it.

Well, the kids will be out of school in a month, and if you could get the time off, we could do it. I just need to get off my duff and finish this book before then. I would love to see them too. It sounded like the start of a great plan to her.

Where are we going to vacation at, Mom? Dante asked.

Well, I don’t know where quite yet. We’d have to ask all your uncles and aunts if they can get away and where they would want to go to for vacation, Carina replied.

That would be so cool to get to see all my cousins, uncles, aunts, and even maybe Grandma can come! Devin exclaimed.

We will have to check with Grandma and see if she is up for a vacation with all of us, but I would love to see her too. Hearing him only mention one grandma made her think of their other grandparents. Her parents had both passed away while she was in college in a car accident. It had been hard on all of them, and it took them quite some time to be able to talk about the accident without crying. Lucy had been so thankful for Antonio when it happened. Then when Antonio died, Loretta had stepped up in the mom role for her, and Lucy was there for her.

How about we stop at that café near the house for lunch? Lucy asked.

Sound great to me. Okay with you two? she asked the boys.

Yup, answered Devin. Okay with me, Dante said.

    Great, Lucy replied.

Why are you eyeing me? she asked Lucy.

You should see your expressions when you are deep in thought. It’s actually very interesting to see.

I’m glad to be entertaining for you, my dear sister. She laughed.

They pulled into the parking lot and got out. Carina saw a truck in the corner of the lot that looked vaguely familiar to her. She couldn’t quite figure out why it looked so familiar until they went inside, and there he was. Jackson was sitting in a corner booth by himself having lunch. She smiled at him when he looked up at her, and he gave her a small smile.

    Friend of yours? Lucy asked.

That’s the nice man who towed my car home that night it broke down. I saw a truck in the parking lot that looked familiar, and now I know why.

Who? Devin asked. He was always listening to their every word.

Mind your business, Devin. You have been told not to be in adult conversation.

    Yes, ma’am, he replied.

The hostess came over to seat them and led them in the opposite direction of Jackson. She sat them at a nice big booth, and each of them took one of the boys on their side. The café had a nice quiet atmosphere, and it was very relaxing. Carina had never been here before and was looking around admiring the way they had decorated with art everywhere. This is really a nice place, Lucy. Have you been here before?

I come here every now and then for lunch. I bring my laptop here to get a different atmosphere to write. Though even being here has not helped my writing as of lately.

I wish there was some way I could help you out of this block. Maybe you could read a little of it to me, and I can give you some suggestions. I know I’m not a wonderful writer like you, but I could possibly help you. She wasn’t sure how herself, but she truly wanted to help her.

That’s a great idea! It just might be what I need to kick-start my brain on this book. Thank you. Lucy appreciated that her sister was always looking for ways to help her.

Excuse me, ladies. Jackson had come up to them, and they both looked up in surprise at the new voice.

Hello, Jackson, nice to see you again, Carina said. She was really curious why he had come up to them. He seemed so quiet and mysterious.

I didn’t want to interrupt. I just wanted to say hello and see if you had gotten that car of yours fixed. I should have offered that night, and I felt bad for not doing so. But then I hadn’t gotten your number to call the next day and offer you my services.

Oh, it’s quite all right. I actually traded it in today for a new car. It was way overdue, I guess. Jackson, this is my sister, Lucy, and my sons, Dante and Devin. This is Jackson, the nice man that helped me get home.

Nice to meet you, Jackson, Lucy said and shook his hand.

Both boys shook his hand also and smiled at him.

Well, it’s nice to meet all of you also. I won’t keep you from your lunch. You all have a nice day.

    You too, Jackson, Lucy replied.

Nice to see you again, Carina said.

You too. With that, he turned and walked out of the café.

Wow, he is very nice looking, Lucy said after he walked out.

There’s something about him though. That night he helped me, I felt the same thing. It’s like he’s too quiet almost, you know what I’m trying to say?

I honestly do see what you mean. It’s like he came over here to say something else to you, and then he decided to just ask if you got your car fixed. He is very mysterious if you ask me. Lucy thought he seemed very polite and nice, yet something was up, and she couldn’t put her finger on it either. Maybe he wants a date with you and is too shy to ask, Lucy suggested.

Oh, that’s gross! Dante piped in.

What’s so gross about that? Lucy asked him, curious.

My mom on a date with some guy? Eww, he answered.

Hey now! Stop talking about me like I’m not sitting here. Carina laughed at how they
