    CHAPTER 1

    SARAN AND HER FAMILY

Saran is a lovely, beautiful girl. She comes from a family of four: Mr and Mrs Saali; her sister, Muranni; and herself. She has long dark hair.

Everyone who comes across her loves her hair because it is dark and beautiful, naturally soft with an amazing length. She has never used hair relaxer, yet her hair is so soft. The feel of her hair leaves many to wonder if she is of this planet. But to everyone’s amazement, she is. The reality shocks them. While some admire her, others envy her for having such beautiful hair and do not hide their feelings. They wear sardonic looks on their faces when she passes by. Her hair falls past her shoulders whenever her hair ribbon is loosened, as often is the case when she is back from school, or on weekends when she is at home.

Saran is not the only lucky one; her sister, Muranni, also has lovely hair. They inherited it from their mother.

Saran’s father works with the railway cooperation in the city. He has an old car that Saran dislikes. He cleans it every morning before he goes to work. Saran dislikes the car because it has a lot of patches and sometimes jerks very badly. That’s because the car is old, and most of the new parts he buys do not work properly with the old worn-out parts. Mr Saali is optimistic that he will buy a new car soon so he can do away with the old junker.

    3.tif

Saran’s mother works as a nurse in a teaching hospital just a few kilometres away from their home. She takes care of the sick every day.

Saran and Muranni both water the garden in the morning before they leave for school.

    4.tif

The garden needs to be watered every day to keep the lawn and the flowers green. The sisters also put some manure to fertilize the grass and plants to make them grow healthily. They work with gloves and shovels. Saturdays are the most appropriate days for this chore because doing so on school days will make them late for school. Keeping the garden green can sometimes be fun; it makes Saran feel like a little doctor looking after a sick patient. Plants in the garden are pretty much like patients. Insect bites, a common plant affliction, need to be avoided or promptly addressed when they occur, lest the flowers wither away.

The girls do some house chores after school as well; they help their mother with little errands while she prepares dinner for the family. This help usually relieves Mrs Saali of stress while the girls in turn learn the recipes for the meals. She takes the time to explain the recipes to them, and they listen attentively. Saran and Muranni want to know how to cook delicious meals, just like their mother, and they learn well. Everyone has a duty
