Withering Wishful Whisper - Sana Bhattacharyya
CHAPTER ONE
C old wind blowing, the cool moist air is just brushing past me. But I am sitting dumbstruck. I haven’t eaten a morsel for how many days, I don’t know. I can feel the tears drying up on my cheek and again coming. I can’t stop them. I am staring blankly at the window. I don’t know what to do. I feel scared. I feel ashamed. But still I could remember the day when I was fifteen and he was sixteen. Staring at him blankly reminds me of all the days in the past as if it was just yesterday.
I can still feel the burning inside me. I can still hear my friends shouting my name, Jenny you cannot do anything. You are hopeless. We were all depending on you and you just made us hung our head low infront of them. What are you waiting for, you still got a chance to prove them wrong.
. My friends had a fight with a girl named Ketty. They actually had a bet that I won’t be able to do gymnastic ever in my life, as I was shy in that matter. But nobody understood the reason for my negative answer. My friends encouraged me. And finally after school was over and almost after everybody evacuated the gymnasium, I entered. I was terrified but to keep my friend’s honour I finally entered. My friend Clara was there to see whether I entered or not, but she told me she won’t be able to witness my gymnastic. So she stayed out and I was alone in the gymnasium. I entered peeping to check at every corner for a single soul. To my relief there were none. I went upto the bar to do the full 360 degrees swing there. First time I tried, as I was expecting I fell down but didn’t get hurt. So I got up and tried again and again till I could do. In my fifth attempt I succeeded doing the full 360 degrees swirl but my top blocked my vision so I fell on my back. Within some seconds I heard a sweet voice. It was a boy’s voice, Well done.
I was shocked and he said, in fifth attempt only wow.
I was terrified and tried to remember if I had ignored seeing him inside when I came in. He gave me his hand and smiled a little. I took his hand and got up. Back to my senses now I realised that was Jade O’ Connor, the gymnastic champion and basketball team captain. He was the most popular guy in our school. He was cute, handsome and sports champion and girls were crazy for him.
Well let me not bore you with Jade’s introduction and appearance and continue with my story. I rubbed my eyes to confirm that was Jade only. In the mean time, when I went out I found Clara vanished from outside the gymnasium. I was alone and it was dark outside. I comforted myself saying I was big enough to go alone nothing will happen to me. Just as I was lost in comforting myself when Jade came over to me and said, Let me walk you home today.
I tried to convince him it’s okay I can go alone. My home is near not that far. But he persisted and finally I had to say yes. Our first day, our first walk together I still remember that. I cherish these memories. We talked a lot and he said what I was dreading he would bring up. Finally he said I was good today, and asked why don’t I join gymnastic. I explained him all about the bet my friends made and he understood me completely. As I reached home, I bade him goodbye and wished him goodnight. I was feeling sorry, so I said, Sorry to bother you.
His reply shocked me, You joke nicely, but it isn’t funny. I mean you are my neighbour, can’t I do this for you atleast.
I was shocked, and instantly I asked Where do you stay?
He started to laugh, and told me instead as if I don’t know. But when I finally said, I really don’t know. He was shocked. I told him, that I had seen him in the area but never knew where he stays. He got offended and showed me his house which was just two houses after mine.
CHAPTER TWO
I asked, Why are you getting offended?
He replied that he knew that girls were after him but he thought that atleast his neighbour would know. Now I got angry and replied, I am not like all those girls. I don’t do all those stupid behaviours of the crazy girls. So I have no idea where you stay. And above all you trying to make me feel proud of being your neighbour. Well I would be happy if we become friends since we are already neighbours but there is nothing to fuss with it.
Then he apologised and I became normal. I told him his house is beautiful and I have seen it many times and wondered who stays there. Then finally we bade each other goodnight and I entered my house. I was happy enough to have Jade as my neighbour but I won’t show him. Then I went to freshen up, when there was a knock at the door. I was smiling when I opened the door. There he was standing on the porch wearing a red t-shirt and blue jeans, Jo. He looked nice but his face was angry. Instantly he said, Why are you smiling? How can you even?
I ignored him and invited him inside. He came in with angry face, didn’t sit on the couch too. He told me about his day and I told him about mine. Then he started again about how I could be happy? I finally said, Well my brother died in an accident years back, and since I am alive I guess I could have friends and smile. I know what all happened but I also know I am alive and that’s why I am happy.
He realised I found a friend who made me smile and he is losing importance of saving my life. He always used to tell me that I should be grateful to him as he saved my life. And that evening he got a hint that he is losing that value. So he was angry and finally when he realised that I was too happy that evening for him to make me sad. He just got up and left the house. I was sitting there smiling. For the first time I was happy to be able to reply him like that. But that day I didn’t know he saw Jade talking to me.
Next day he followed me. But I was unaware of it until later. When I went to school, I saw Jade with his friends. All of my friends asked me if I did anything yesterday at gymnasium or not as they would be watching the video today. As I was just about to answer I saw Jade walking towards me. Hey Jenny. I guess you forgot this.
Jade said and gave me my wristwatch back. I replied, Hey Jade. Oh yeah thank you so much I searched for it a lot yesterday.
He smiled and said, No mention, what can’t I do this small thing also? Jenny!
I looked up to his face and he showed me the dial of his wristwatch and tapped on it. I thought maybe he wanted me to wait for him today as we being neighbours we can walk home together, that way we will be friends.
Classes went as usual. After class, I somehow managed to walk away from my friends and went and stood outside the gymnasium. I was waiting for hardly five minutes, when he came running, towards me. He apologised to me thousand times before we started walking back home. The sky was clear and we both saw many stars. Saw some constellation too. Then he pointed to an unique constellation and showed me the head star of that constellation. He told that he likes that star. It’s like the only constant in his life. I realised instantly which star it is. He said that he always wished to be able to see that star clearly. When I smiled hearing his wish he asked if I could help him. I nodded, and he started almost jumping like a child getting a toy he so badly wanted. I was repenting nodding my head but when I saw the eagerness in his eyes I couldn’t help myself but said Yes Jade, I can help you.
He actually did a swirl in the middle of the road. We then went to the backside of my house. The garden almost destroyed so it was a jungle only. There was a huge tree and bushes were surrounding it. Inside these bushes a telescope was hidden. The telescope of my late brother whenever we saw it, we used to be sad for long time so we hide it behind
