    CHAPTER ONE

    THE GARBAGE DUMP

If you take a tour to the beautiful city of Brooklyn in the United States, to the elegant city of Sao Paulo in Brazil, to the Queen’s city of London or to the skyscraper- laden city of Hong Kong, to China’s Shanghai city or even down the famous Safari nation of Papa Madiba in South Africa, you will experience the essence of beauty and orderliness. If you could travel around, visit the streets and isles of the cities, before the end of your expedition, one feature you would not miss is the unsightly presence of garbage dumps. Yes, I mean garbage dumps.

Garbage dumpsites are the abode of waste materials produced by families, societies, workplaces, things or objects we once related with and admired, and of course from religious places. In other words, these stinking garbage dumpsites are products of man’s activities.

Dumpsites are typically kept away from public glare. They are a sharp contrast to the garbs of beauty many famous cities of the world are clothed in. Although some cities have more garbage dumps than others, yet no country is so clean that you would not find a garbage dumpsite somewhere outside the centre of her beauty and opulence. It is of essence to emphasize that these dumpsites are generated by human activities.

Ordinarily, no one would allow garbage in his front yard. People are ashamed to expose their personal waste to the public, which is why they prefer hiding it and enduring the stink in their closet. But as unattractive as garbage dumps are, if you drive or walk by them, you will see scavengers at work. What could they be looking for in a stinking dumpsite? What remains after an orange has been squeezed and sucked dry? Well, the answer is this, right there in someone’s garbage is found another’s treasure and means of livelihood after such wastes have been recycled. Indeed, from the garbage dumps come treasures of great value found today on the shelves of Walmart and many malls around the world.

If inanimate products with no breath or emotions can be recycled and put to other profitable uses, how much more the human person. Hence, in your garbage, there is gain. Very many people have been misused and abused far more than any physical product, while circumstances of life have beaten and trashed some in the garbage of hopelessness. For anyone in such situations, I pray that God in His mercy will give you another chance. I am also hopeful that God will, through this book, heal and restore you.

Trashed in the Bin of Hopelessness

She confined herself to her bed, sorrowful, depressed and contemplating suicide. She felt disappointed and in a deep state of hopelessness because her lover jilted her. It was an awful state to be in - to quarantine oneself, whereas the person responsible for keeping her in that state had long moved on.

This was the story of Tracey Emin.

Let me share one of the many interesting things that inspired the title, GAIN FROM MY GARBAGE. For 24 months prior to writing this book, there were very few times I sat in front of a television to watch any programme. One early afternoon, after observing my regular quiet time with God, I turned on the television to CNN, and the programme on air was The market place Africa with the topic, African Arts. One of the discussants was a representative from Bonhams Arts who drew the viewers’ attention to a portrait from South Africa. According to him, the portrait was once a table in a parking lot with heaps of garbage on it. Someone who knew its value picked and cleaned up the portrait before taking it to the Bonhams auction house. When asked the value of the portrait, he said, it is worth a million to one and half million Dollars. Imagine! What someone picked from a trash bin, once abused and relegated to the most unpleasant of places, has now become a priceless treasure, just like Tamar the mourning woman.

    CHAPTER TWO

    TAMAR THE MOURNING

    WOMAN

Judah (meaning praise), the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham went to visit his friend, Hirah. On his way, he saw a woman,
