    those black wenches that he just had to bed.

    children shades of brown she did born.

    while she carried the burden of having been scorned.

    black wenches watched as their men were killed.

    watched and cried, and they died but still,

    carried on the best that they could.

    from black wenches to coloreds they did turn.

    still standing behind the whites who spurned.

    jim crow, no go… . how do you raise a child.

    with pride and esteem and to know when not to chide.

    no more coloreds, they were negroes now.

    marching, protesting even rioting for the why and how.

    they fought for not only political freedom but economic too.

    they would no longer settle for—
