My favorite subjects at school were history, literature and gym. I have always loved to write and I would prefer to read a book than watch the movie. I have studied photography I am now going to college to learn computers and I am hoping to one day be able to take off and see the world. I would love to see the mountains of Colorado and the beautiful sites in Greece and England then maybe have fun touring all our favorite theme parks.

Special thanks to my family, especially the children

My daughter Elizabeth; her husband Johnny; my sons Kevin, Hugh, and Arthur; my niece Erica; and my nephews Joshua and Tyler, I wanted to let you know I appreciate the patience and the help you gave me while I struggled with writing this book. Thank you for proofreading, letting me bounce ideas off you, giving me ideas, and giving up time on the computer so I could write. But mostly, I appreciate the encouragement to continue writing when I thought I was wasting my time. And that thank you also goes to my son Hugh’s friend, Pvt. B. Robnett. To you all, thank you.

Teresa could tell it was late. She couldn’t see her clock, so she didn’t know what time it was. All the lights were off, so she assumed everyone was sleeping, but something had woken her. She got out of bed and quietly walked down the hall. She heard a noise, so she stopped to listen. She peeked around the corner; at the end of the hall were three figures. She ducked down and ran to the couch so she could get a closer look. They were all men; one didn’t look any older than she was. They were talking to each other and had not noticed her; she tried to sneak back into her room.

She heard one of them say, Let’s go get her.

She looked over her shoulder and saw they were headed in her direction. She hurried as fast as she could till she rounded the corner, then she ran the rest of the way to her room. After she was back in her room, she shut the door and started to move the dresser in front of it. Teresa was frightened as they pushed their way into her room and fanned out to bar any escape. She tried to run around the one that looked the youngest, but he blocked her exit. Before she had a chance to make another move, one of the others came up and grabbed her from behind. He put his hand over her mouth so she couldn’t scream. While she struggled with her captor, the third abductor came up to them and waved his hand in front of Teresa’s face, stating, Le sommeil; and everything went black.

When Teresa woke up, she tried to move but could not. She looked down, she was not restrained in any way, but she still couldn’t move. Even though she was confused, she didn’t waste time thinking about that. She looked around trying to get a sense of where she was and if she could find something to help her get out.

She was in the middle of a small room; there was nothing fancy about it. It was quiet, and there didn’t appear to be any furniture. She couldn’t see any doors or windows, but the smell of pine was strong. There was a ring of light around her, like the only lightbulb that worked was right above her. Everything else was hidden in the darkness.

She wasn’t left wondering about this for long because out of a dark corner of the room came a man. She could barely make anything out till he got closer to her. There wasn’t anything impressive about this man. He was slightly taller than her, five feet six inches, so Teresa figured he was about six feet three inches. She could see he had muscles, but he was not overly muscular, just average. He looked to be 185 lbs. His posture was as straight as a board. But his movements were quick and smoothly executed. When he stopped next to her, she could see he had brown hair and blue eyes. Teresa, in her situation, had to mentally kick herself for thinking how amazing his eyes were. She watched him carefully.

When she tried to speak, her mouth made the motion, but no sound came out. She tried again with the same results. He brought his hand up to her face and grabbed the hair that had fallen loose. His fingers brushed her cheek, his hands were soft, and his touch was surprisingly gentle.

Don’t bother trying to talk, Teresa, you can’t, he said as he brushed the stray hair from her face. He continued to talk to her. I have brought you here. Teresa didn’t recognize him as one of the three who had been in her mom’s house. She must have looked confused because he clarified.

Well, some of my partners brought you here to me. I cannot tell you exactly where here is, but it is a safe place, I assure you. And that is all I will say. The less you know, the safer we’ll all be. He looked at the quizzical glare on her face. He chuckled then continued.

Do I think I’m in danger from you? No! But our group is from others who wouldn’t mind hurting you or anyone who gets in their way. We weren’t supposed to bring you back yet, but we need you now. He started to pace in front of Teresa. When he stopped and looked at Teresa, she noticed he had a small grin on his face.

I know what you’re thinking, bring you back. Be patient, I will explain everything in time. First—he waved his hand in front of her face and stated—par lent. She let out a heavy breath. She was preparing to say something. He held up his hand to stop her.

Trust me, he began. I will explain everything to you. You are not in any danger from me. My name is Morgan. I have had you brought here. We need your help and you need ours if you want to survive. He waved his hand in front of them like he was wiping a steamed-up mirror and stated, Sur. As he did, the wall lit up like a television. Pictures were flashing by so fast they were a blur. They came to a sudden stop. Teresa thought she recognized the place, she definitely recognized the people. Teresa was watching her parents. They were walking away from the hospital. Her mom was being pushed in a wheelchair. She held baby Teresa in her arms. Both her mom and her dad wore big smiles as they approached their car door. Her dad had just opened the door when Teresa saw a flicker; nothing real noticeable, but it was there.

Teresa was about to ask Morgan about the flicker when he stated, Saw that, did ya? Well, there were several events throughout your life that you had to be taken for a magical reason. These were times you had to be present during the event to enhance your powers or abilities. These little ‘glitches,’ he said this word as he made the quote sign with his fingers, are when magic interfered with your life.

They turned their attention back to the wall. The scenes of Teresa’s life continued to speed by; the second stop was of Teresa in the fourth grade. She was on stage doing a square dance with her classmates. Teresa recognized her teacher and remembered doing the skit. As fourth grade Teresa walked down the aisle going to her seat; there was a flicker.

The scenes started to move again. They weren’t moving too fast, but fast enough it looked like someone flipping through still pictures. When they stopped, Teresa could tell they had only moved slightly forward in time because the scene was her walking to the bus with her fourth-grade teacher. Just before they got to the bus, a glitch occurred.

The scenes continued on. They stopped, Teresa saw herself sitting in her history class. She was taking notes. Her teacher grabbed her glasses and wiggled them. She started explaining how her brothers had broken them. The Teresa from the scene was smiling at her teacher, the present Teresa was just thinking about how much she liked that teacher when the glitch came.

Before Teresa could say anything, the scenes started moving again. They stopped on Teresa in the lunch line. Teresa recognized it to be just before her family moved from her hometown. Some kids were approaching her. The kids hadn’t gotten to her when the glitch came.

Then the scenes started to move again. This time, when they stopped, Teresa realized it hadn’t gone too far ahead; but she didn’t get a chance to recognize anything in particular. There were several glitches in a row. When the glitches were done, the scenes continued to play on like watching a television program.

Morgan crossed his arms and watched Teresa. Teresa couldn’t tell if he was trying to read her facial expressions or her mind. As Morgan walked by her, she could see him drum his fingers over his arm, as he stated, Aller. The scenes of Teresa’s life faded out. As they faded, she was slowly able to move again. Teresa took a step toward the viewing wall then turned to look at Morgan, as he continued to explain, All those glitches you noticed, those were key points in time. Magical events happened at those times that could not be duplicated and would never happen again or at least happen twice in your lifetime. So you had to be present at these events so you could witness them. We helped you get to all those events. The other thing we did for you was to guide your path to the way of magic. The movies you watched, the books you read, the games you played, were all ways we tried to prepare you for this in hopes that you would be open to accept magic and give you, for the lack of a better phrase, a job.

You mean, Teresa started, but before she could finish, Morgan began.

Destinies like you are destined for greatness. No, that’s only in the movies. People aren’t destined for greatness. They make great things happen by working hard and trying to do their best. Nobody gets a free ride. Everyone has to work hard to accomplish greatness. Now to start, let me say magic is real, all the stories you read are real. They have either happened or are happening. They were written by people from the magic world. Your favorite story was written by a muse. The other one you’re reading was written by a wizard or a magician, I don’t know what they’re calling themselves nowadays. We directed you to these stories so all this didn’t come as a big surprise to you. Also, it gives you an idea of what you are going to face if you agree to take this on. Teresa had remained quiet the whole time Morgan was talking. She started with a But, and before she could go further, Morgan started to interrupt again.

This time, Teresa spoke up. Stop! Can I please ask my own questions? This mind-reading thing or whatever you’re doing is driving me nuts.

Very well, ask, he said simply, as he brought his hand out as if offering her something from it.

Okay, first, she started. As she stepped toward him, she punched him in his arm. I didn’t like how you brought me here. Morgan was rubbing the spot she just hit. Then, if magic were real, don’t you think someone would have noticed by now?

We put out books, movies, etc., to keep nonmagic people occupied so they don’t discover the truth of magic existing. When a nonmagic person comes close to finding magic or seeing magic, we step in and give a simple explanation or erase memories if that don’t work. There have only been a few incidents in time where the problem became too much to handle quietly and extreme measures were taken, but only a few.

Teresa wanted Morgan to elaborate on extreme measures taken but decided not to ask. Instead, she asked him, What was that you were saying about the books, movies, and games helping me?

Well, for instance, that program you watched about the witches helped you understand what happens when nonmagic people know about magic people, and when I told you about taking care of magical problems, you already understood how we do that. The books you’ve read, all of them explain how magical people get trained or schooled, how the different plains, realms, and dimensions work. Even the travelers through time, well, those weren’t exact. We have the ability to time travel, we don’t use a machine to travel, we are not restricted to whom we interact with in whatever time we go to, and not everyone gets stuck in time. He said this last part as he waved his hand like he was trying to brush a fly away from his face.

You know, you say that as if everyone could time travel. And out of all the movies I’ve seen, she started.

The one where the boy travels to his past and messed it up was the most accurate, Morgan finished for her.

Good! That one was my favorite, she exclaimed.

Morgan laughed as he continued. The video games helped you learn strategies of battle. All of this has given you some insight of the magical beings and creatures you will encounter.

Teresa thought for a second before continuing with her questions. You told me it would make me open to magic and a job.

Morgan turned to face Teresa as he brought his arm up as if pointing to an invisible blackboard saying, Lui montrer, and as he did, Teresa saw the covers of every book she had read and the promotional pictures of every movie she had ever seen. All the stories you’ve seen and read have opened you up to and, in fact, have made you crave magic. Otherwise, I’m sure you would have left by now. You want this to be real and not a dream. He said this as he raised an eyebrow and looked at her for a second.

When she didn’t say anything, he continued, So this brings us to the job. As Morgan said that, the look on his face became very serious, almost scary. It reminded Teresa of the look her dad would give her when she got into trouble. This look made Teresa wonder what was coming next. We have several places being watched, and so far, we have not been able to get a man on the inside. We would like to try and get you to be that guy. You go in, find what we are looking for, fix it, and get rid of it or whatever is needed to be done."

That sounds like a policeman, Teresa stated.

Close, except it’s not law breakers we want. Every job will be explained as you’re needed, Morgan explained.

So not the police, a hit man—a magical hit man, Teresa commented.

He started to say, No, no, until he saw the smile on Teresa’s face. Well, we will get to that later, he declared then he chuckled.

Teresa watched as Morgan started to pace the floor in front of the viewing wall. She remained quiet so he could think. After a minute, he stopped then stood watching her. Teresa remained silent for another minute before saying, I haven’t run off, at least not yet. You’re right, I am curious. I do want to believe in magic. But I don’t like being made to look like a fool either. One wrong move and the people you’re worried about finding your little gang here will be the least of your worries. For right now though, you have my full attention and cooperation, and if you’d like to keep it, you need to continue, please.

Morgan stepped up to Teresa and said, That’s what I needed to hear. He spread his arms out saying, Viennent. As he brought his arms together, two chairs appeared out of nowhere and stopped one behind each of them. Morgan motioned for Teresa to take a seat. They sat across from each other in silence for a minute or two to give Morgan a chance to organize his thoughts. When he was ready to start, Morgan leaned forward, resting his elbows on the arms of his seat, and started talking.

The whole process is simple, there are some things that could happen that will be more difficult for you to manage. But I have confidence you can do them. The first thing you’ll do is go through this door. He waved his right arm and stated, Apparaissent, and a door appeared. In here, you will be taught how to do a soul jump or possession which is how to get into another’s head so you can observe their activities. It is also possible to control the host for short periods of time, but that is not your mission. You will only be observing. Once you have learned everything from here, you will return back to this room.

He waved his left hand saying, Apparaissent, and a circular portal appeared. You will go through this portal to start your observations, Morgan explained.

Teresa’s attention was piqued when he mentioned a portal. But this portal was not like what Teresa had ever seen on television or in the movies. All the ones she had seen were big sucking voids, wind tunnels, or just a black hole. When Teresa looked at the portal, she saw three scenes from a different time and place. The first scene played for five seconds then the colors swirled as if someone had stirred that scene with a spoon. This reminded Teresa of when her bible school class had made the multiple-colored candles, although the swirling colors were prettier on the portal. As one scene swirled away, the next would start. It appeared to be the same people in their young-adult life. The last scene was these people much older. When the last scene finished, the first scene began again but with different people.

Morgan had continued his instructions while Teresa watched the portal. This portal will take you back in time, not like conventional time travel. You will want specific times. So this, the Portal of the Fates, will take you exactly where and when you need to be. It’s the more precise way of time travel. This is what we need so you can get into yourselves and live those glitches. When you’re ready, you may enter the door.

Morgan sat watching Teresa waiting for a response. Teresa watched the door for a second then stood up, Morgan followed suit. Teresa walked to the door and stood in front of it. Morgan watched her for a minute before asking What’s wrong?

Teresa turned her head to look over her shoulder at Morgan as she stated, I thought the door would open for me, sorry! She grabbed turned the knob and walked through the doorway.

Teresa entered a hallway of a school. There were presumably parents standing against the wall. There were children sitting cross-legged on the floor with other children running around them. Teresa noticed a few children were walking around, tapping the seated children on the head with one finger like duck, duck goose. After they tapped, they would look right at Teresa and smile. Teresa noticed that everyone’s attention was aimed toward one room, so she started for that room.

The light was very bright in here, and the room was filled with smoke which started to clear the farther in she got. When the smoke had cleared away, Teresa was able to see a man. He had his arms spread above his head, as if he was praising God. He brought his hands down, and together in a flourish, as he spread them apart, birds flew from his hands. She slowly walked toward the man. She said hello. Her mouth moved, but the words sounded like they were a whisper above and around her like an echo. Teresa stopped just before she reached the man. He turned to look at her then it appeared to Teresa that the man floated to her. He started circling around her. She could feel a small breeze rustle her hair. The man leaned in toward Teresa. She heard him whisper, One moment is all it takes. But his mouth did not move, only to smile at her. The man continued to circle around her, and she could still hear the whispered words.

He quickly picked up speed, and as he did, the children and the parents disappeared. Soon, she could not tell if the man was still circling around her. All she saw was a blur. She could tell the room had started to spin. She closed her eyes to try and keep herself from passing out. She continued to hear the whispered words, One moment is all it takes.

Just as she thought, she couldn’t take it anymore. She felt the room slowing down. Teresa opened her eyes. She was standing alone in a large empty room. There were several doors. They were all closed but one. Standing in this doorway was a woman. She looked to be middle-aged dressed in a floor-length dress in patterns of blues and reds. The patterns moved around her outfit and looked as if they were moving along her skin. Her long hair she had pulled back with a head band. She wore small metal-framed glasses with rose-colored lenses. Her appearance made Teresa think of the hippies from the sixties television shows.

Teresa hadn’t realized she had been slowly drifting toward this woman and her room until the woman grabbed her hand and pulled her into the room.

The woman let go of Teresa’s hand but continued to the center of the room where a counter stood. Teresa could now see she had some gray hair mixed with the red. She was slightly shorter than Teresa and looked like one good strong wind and she would be blown away. The smile on the woman’s face never faltered, and she hadn’t stopped talking since she grabbed Teresa’s hand.

Teresa looked around the room. It was full of jewelry trays, trinkets, knickknacks, and weapons used in hand-to-hand combat like throwing stars, knives, and staffs. She had a couple of animals, Teresa couldn’t tell what they were, running free around the room. As she continued to talk, Teresa thought she sounded surprisingly young, almost like a school girl.

Hey, honey, come here. I have to show you this. Teresa didn’t know how long the woman had been trying to get her attention.

I’m sorry. I guess I wasn’t paying attention very well, Teresa apologized as she approached the counter.

That’s okay, it’s a lot to take in, I know. By the way, my name is Ann. I’m here to help you learn the soul possession and to show you this, she said as she pulled out a box.

It appeared to be heavy. There were two spools of small link chain like you would use to make jewelry. One spool was gold, the other was silver. The rest of the box was filled with these small egg-shaped gems, they were lined up neatly, and there were a lot of them. It didn’t look like the box should be able to hold that many. Teresa was thinking they were so beautiful.

You can touch them if you want to. At the sound of Ann’s voice, Teresa looked up and saw she was smiling at her.

Teresa lightly ran her fingers over the eggs. As she touched them, they lit up. The lights went out when her fingers left them. They all sparkled the different colors of the rainbow and in all shades of those colors.

Guardians, Ann stated simply. She softly chuckled when Teresa quickly looked up in surprise at that statement.

Teresa looked at her quizzically. Guardians? she asked.

Yes! Ann began to explain. Everyone has a guardian, even nonmagic people. They may not know it, but for some magic beings, it’s their lives’ work to care for nonmagic people. The fairies and sprites care for nature. They help plants, trees, animals, and they keep our water clean. Dragons are excellent guardians because they are loyal to only one, but most do not trust humans, so they are unwilling to become guardians. Gargoyles watch over nonmagic people but can only move around during the night hours. Well, you get the picture. With nonmagic people, their guardians are usually angels. It’s very rare that a nonmagic person gets something other than an angel.

Teresa interrupted Ann, You said it rarely happens, how often is rarely?

Not that often, it’s been about thirty or forty years since the last one. It’s not so bad when the person is good because their work tends to be good. But when it’s someone who’s bad, well, you get my point.

Teresa’s attention moved back to the eggs in the box. She was mesmerized by the swirling colors. She watched as they went from pink to purple then blue, green, yellow, and orange to pink again. Ann reached in, held her hand just above the eggs, stated hausse, and moved her hand in a circular motion. One of the eggs popped up out of the box; as soon as it got to Ann’s hand, it was replaced by another egg. Ann turned her hand, so her palm was up. Teresa could see that the egg hovered above her palm. The gold chain started to pull itself off the spool. The chain spun upward and looked like a tiny tornado. It hopped onto Ann’s hand and took the egg and quickly spun itself to nothing. As it disappeared, there was a loud bang like a gunshot. And everything was gone. Teresa was floating in space.

Ann appeared in front of Teresa. Now to finish your… she thought for a second then said, lesson.

Teresa was frustrated. But you haven’t shown me anything yet.

Ann smiled and said, All the information is there, then she grabbed Teresa’s face. It took Teresa a second to hear the whispered, Relax. After it repeated a couple of times, Teresa was able to tell it was Ann’s voice saying, Relax. Watch and relax. Teresa started to pay attention to Ann.

She was looking right into Teresa’s face. Was she blowing? No, she was taking in small breaths of air. Teresa started to feel light-headed then she saw a strand of light between them. When she took her next breath in, the strand of light and Ann were both gone. She was alone.

Then all of a sudden, Teresa felt a pulling type sensation in her head and chest. Before she had time to blink, she felt as if she had a severe migraine, and the pain in her chest was so bad she couldn’t get any air into her lungs. Teresa felt a push against her chest and the word communiqué inside her head then she was falling and finally able to take a breath. Ann came into sight for a second before Teresa landed on the floor in the room where she had met Morgan. She had landed on the floor with a thud that almost knocked the wind right back out of her. She rubbed her head as she started to sit up.

Take it easy. Don’t try to get up too quickly. Morgan had appeared and was kneeling by her side. He put his hand on her shoulder to stop her from getting up. He sat on the floor next to her.

Teresa lay on the floor, thinking for a second before asking Morgan, What was that at the end?

I believe Ann demonstrated a soul possession and, judging from you, had trouble releasing you, Morgan explained.

She possessed my soul? Teresa was getting angry.

    Yes! Morgan answered simply.

I didn’t like that one bit. Her anger was starting to dissipate as she thought of the scenes she had seen. The first one, she was a newborn baby.

Morgan could see the worry on her face. What’s wrong? he asked her.

She sat up next to Morgan. I can’t do this. There is no way I am going to do that to a newborn baby. She declared as she pointed toward the ceiling, referring to her soul possession with Ann. Especially when that baby is me, it could kill, Teresa stuttered for her next word, me. Morgan chuckled at her wording. It’s not funny! Teresa scolded.

Morgan began to explain to her, I know it’s not funny. You shouldn’t have any problems because you’re going to possess your own soul. Ann had trouble because she possessed your soul. They are strangers. Sometimes you have trouble going in or coming out when you possess other people’s souls. But the souls you’re going to be possessing are your own. They will recognize each other, and you should have no problems. This explanation eased Teresa’s mind, so when Morgan stood and offered his hand to her asking, Are you ready for the last step in the process? she took his hand and let him pull her up to stand next to him. Brushing herself off, she said, Let’s do this. We need to get to the end of this fun-filled journey. Enough of Teresa’s hair had fallen out of her bun. She decided to remove the pins from her hair.

Morgan watched as she shook her hair out. When she was done, he asked, Are you ready now?

She looked at him and said, I am now, you may proceed.

Very well, let’s get going. He raised his arms as he stated, Eteindre les Lumieres, then the lights dimmed. He stood facing her side. He slowly lowered his hand in front of her face, whispering, Proches. Teresa’s eyes slowly closed. She could feel herself starting to relax. She had a floating kind of feeling in her body, but she could tell her feet were still on the floor. She felt a breeze rustle the smaller curls of her hair, and the loose material of her shirtsleeves flipped slowly back and forth against her arms. She could hear Morgan whispering, Apprendre des photos. Morgan moved to stand behind her; he bumped her back as he reached around her. He was making some kind of pattern with his hands. The only motion she could tell was when he would do a circular motion because his arms would bump hers. He then set his fingertips on her temples. His fingertips were warm as he touched her. She heard Morgan start to chant, Detendre et flotter. His touch was getting warmer, but not enough to burn her skin. She felt her feet hover over the floor. He set his open hands on each side of her head and slid them back over the top of her head. When his hands got to the crown of Teresa’s head, she started to lean back. He turned his hands and positioned them on the back of her head with his fingers at the nape of her neck. He held his hands there for a few more seconds before he let go. She was now floating in the air.

She imagined the magician shows with the floating girl. She could feel Morgan set his hand on her stomach. He stated, Hausse, then lifted his hand off again. She rose with this movement. She pictured Morgan taking a hoop and passing her through it then she heard him in her ear. Pay attention. Don’t speak. Just stop day dreaming. You have to clear your mind. Pay attention to the images you see. You will pick up on everything all right. Here we go.

He stopped talking. She felt him brushing her hair on the sides of her head with his hands. The whispering began again. The whispers sounded like they were right in her ears. Regarder les images du spin, then the vision she saw behind the door started playing in her head. She could see them as if they were playing out in front of her eyes on a film strip circling around her. The whispers got louder, the pictures circled faster and faster.

Then Teresa started to spin, the film went one way. She spun the opposite way. Soon, Teresa couldn’t tell they were even pictures anymore. It all became too much. She was beyond dizzy, she felt like she did the time her brothers twisted her up in their tire swing, and let her loose. By the time she was done twirling, she had lost her lunch. Was she about to lose it again?

She couldn’t take it anymore. She was about to scream for Morgan to make it stop. When it suddenly stopped, no whispers, no pictures, no spinning.
