    CHAPTER 1

    The Plan

In Hollywood, there were changes being felt in the Long household. Louise was becoming bored after Floyd’s sudden demise. She had declared that she needed fewer employees. She called the staff in and stated that they would be given a generous severance pay and six weeks to find other employment. She had already confided in the chef that she was moving abroad and would need his service and also two of the maids who were his favorite companions.

Weeks before, she had called Louise, the loyal employee of Floyd’s, to ask her to travel with her. There was one condition—that she was to abbreviate her name to Lou as this would cause misunderstandings in communication. She agreed as she was tired of the small apartment that her meager earnings had provided. Louise explained that she would like her help in planning one last festive event before their departure. She would like the kings of the movie industry to know that she was still solvent after Floyd’s death. They had no knowledge that she had financed all his film efforts. She had felt that Floyd had not received the credit that he deserved when competing with larger production companies.

Lou started packing, and since she had rented a furnished apartment for years, the only items that she would need were her overworn clothing. Louise had stated that she would like for her to move into the mansion as soon as possible. This pleased Lou as she knew that the Longs always had lavish meals. She hurriedly packed her belongings, and instead of taking the bus as she had always done in her working years, she called a cab for the first time. She was greeted by one of the maids. This did not concern Lou as she was ushered up a winding staircase to a lavish suite, which was located next to the one Louise occupied.

The maid called to Louise, and she rushed out to greet Lou. She was so excited about her plans that she ordered brunch sent to her suite to furnish the details of their travel. Lou sat amazed at how quickly she had planned this venture down to the last detail of the destination. She vividly recalled the city by the name of Eskilstuna located in Sweden. This was when she had met four transplants to that country and all were Americans. The strangest part that she recalled was that one had been a former classmate of Floyd’s. Their travels had been fictionalized into a movie that had at last made the Long Production Company an envy of all the major producers. This was the first time that she had been given a bonus for her long years of service. She hoped Louise would be more generous as she would be her traveling companion.

Louise mentioned that she had chartered a cargo plane to transport Wilbur, Floyd Jr., and Milly. Lou was stunned. Why was a cargo plane needed? Her question was answered as Louise quickly noticed her puzzled expression.

These are my precious Arabian horses and the Shetland pony that Floyd bequeathed to his old classmate Mildred. He called her ‘Milly the Prancer.’ I will deliver her on my way to the residence that I have had my financial manager purchase for me in the rural area near these reclusive people. I am so excited, and I know it will be a learning experience for all of us. I will be taking two of the stableboys from the ranch to care of my horses. I plan, of course, to take my special pieces of furnishings that mean so much to me. The pilot of the chartered cargo plane assured me that for an extra thousand dollars, we could ride along as passengers. I prefer not to be separated from my memories.

Lou was stunned. Riding on board a plane with animals—she had never heard of such a thing.

Lou inquired, What about your family? Do they know of your plans?

I seldom hear from Bill. Penny is looking after the ranch and ranch hands. In fact, the last time I heard from her, she had moved the men into the ranch house and had turned the bunkhouse into stables for wild mustangs they have been traveling to Wyoming to save. She is having the time of her life. I am not needed here. One of the movie producers has leased my house to use for movie sets. One person who needs a call from me is my grandson away at the university. He left with Renna, and as far as I know they are still a couple.

Lou stood and started to leave her to her privacy, but Louise motioned for her to sit.

This will be brief. I am just giving him a hint of the bank account that I am leaving in his name so that he knows there will be sufficient funds to continue his education. Bill made no provision for his education.

    CHAPTER 2

    Misinformation

At Jerry’s apartment, there were many empty beer bottles stacked on the kitchen cabinet. Jerry was relaxing with one of his friends from a journalism class. Renna was walking around as usual for exercise, as the baby bump was giving her trouble while sitting.

The phone rang, and Jerry placed it on speaker and listened as his Granny Louise started to talk in an excited voice. He hoped his father was not in an emergency. He had not heard from him in months.

Jerry, I have some very exciting news! I am moving to Eskilstuna, Sweden. I will be taking my Arabian beauties and Milly the Prancer. I hope to be out of the house by the end of the month. I just wanted you to know that I have set up a bank account for you to finish your education and for some luxuries. You take care, and I will be in touch in case you need me. You know that you are my favorite grandson.

He smiled. He was her only grandson. Then he grimaced. She was planning on transporting the horses that must have been at least fifteen years old to a foreign county—poor Granny!

    "Good luck! I hope
