About this ebook
Don Johnson
Ellen Crawford Johnson was 52 years old when her life was altered by crime. Altered in ways she could never have imagined, and still find hard to believe. Her life was perfectly normal before March 11, 2001. Ellen worked forty-five hours every week as a secretary; shopped for groceries, clothing, and all the essentials for comfortable living. She visited antique stores to satisfy her passion for old treasure. In short, she was an energetic, vibrant human being. Until that day.

26018.pngAs it is always hard to describe one’s own life to others it is more so to write about another. Ellen Crawford as she was christened was born to parents who came to meet in a different county of which both parents were born. Their homes were in Jackson County, Tennessee, but moved from their because of harsh times. Moline (named for a tractor from Illinois) was tall & sturdy. She had one sister who was always jealous of her because as siblings are one more beautiful than the other. This showed its truth when Jr. Crawford saw Moline. Edna was always resentful of her because Jr. took favor of her sister.
Jr. courted Moline and in short time married. Nine months and one week later Ellen arrived. She was the first of eleven baby Crawfords to come to their marriage. (11/27/48).
Her first year was of love and care. Great pride from parents who wanted children but mom was already expecting child number #2. Birth control had not come to be a word of mainstream America yet. As the years went by the house soon filled with children. By age 7, Ellen had six siblings. By now, also since she was the oldest, she was given the responsibilities of a mother. She would diaper, feed, rock-buys all those that needed it from that early age to 18. She told me that each time her mother left for the hospital to deliver another child she dreaded and love it at the same time.
With each new occasion with a newborn in the house, there come unrest. Children who would have to double up to make room for another child to come in.
Ellen got more chores since she was the oldest. But she loved them all.
She told me of how they would all pile out of the car when they visited her grandparents. Her grandmother would cringe but grandpa loved it. He would show them his farm. The chickens and ducks and old Elder. Now Elder was her grandfather’s pride and joy white mule.
Tenn sold a lot of males back in 40’s & 50’s. Lebanon TN (which is where she lived all her life) was well known for their auctions of high grade mules.
Elder was a top mules except staying out of the garden. Occasionally he would want a snack for all his labor.
Ellen always enjoyed the trip out to the country except one Sunday her father took ill and she was given the task of getting them all home safely as her mother couldn’t drive and her father to sick to hold the wheel. So at 13
