    Chapter 1

    Planning the Trip

John the oldest child in the Peterson family likes playing baseball and football with his friends. Like most ten year old boys, he likes sports, fishing, and of course, staying away from girls. Today, he was thinking about where he would like to go on vacation. John’s parents, Jim and Jan, planned a family meeting later in the evening to discuss a vacation trip, and decide where everyone wanted to go. John was told to think about where he wanted to go and what the entire family would enjoy doing together. His family lives in Kissimmee, Florida where Disney World, Epcot, and Sea World are located. John and Emily see a lot of the attractions in the area, so Florida is not where John would want to vacation. John would like to go to the Baseball or Football Hall of Fame Museums. He knows there is one, but he doesn’t know where they are. He would ask his Dad. John went in search of his Dad to ask.

Dad, do you know where the Baseball Hall of Fame or the Football Hall of Fame is? John asked.

His Dad replied, Look it up on the computer.

Can you just tell me; to save time? John responded.

Again, Dad replied, Look it up on the computer.

It would be so much easier if his Dad would just tell him but John knows his Dad likes him to look things up himself for answers; just like when he wants to know the spelling or definition of a word. His Dad says, Look it up. John was curious if his Dad had ever visited these museums.

Johns’ only sister Emily, likes playing on the trampoline. She is eight years old and to John she is a nuisance. All Emily wants to do is jump up and down on the trampoline and do flips. She can do three flips at one time. John thinks when Emily does flips it looks pretty cool, but he would never tell her. Emily doesn’t know where she wants to go on vacation. She has heard her Mom and Dad talking about National Parks, but Emily has no idea where they are.

School was about to be out for the summer, and it was time for that all important meeting, to plan their vacation. Both children were excited about a summer vacation. At seven o’clock they gathered in the kitchen and began discussing where they may go for their summer vacation. Emily said, I want to go somewhere that has a lot of things we have never seen before.

John said, Oh Emily, there are thousands of places we have never seen before, and laughed.

The Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio or the Baseball Hall of Fame in Morristown, New York would be fun places to go, John stated. He was proud of the fact that he had looked the information up on the internet like his Dad had told him and found where they were both located. John realized the hall of fame was not something everyone would enjoy going to so he said, Maybe It would be fun going camping in the mountains.

Dad said, Those are all good suggestions. Then they talked about several different places and whether everyone would enjoy the places discussed. Dad said, Let’s think on it for a few days to see what would be enjoyable for everyone.

They had to decide where to go, when they would leave, how long they would be gone, and whether it would be a camping trip. For several days they suggested different places to go realizing they all had to agree on one place. John realized no one else would enjoy going to the Museums except maybe his Dad, so when they got together he wouldn’t suggest going to the Hall of Fame Museums.

One evening Dad told John and Emily to come into the kitchen so the family could discuss plans for the trip. Emily thought finally they would decide where to go on vacation. Everyone would enjoy going to a National Park, Dad stated. Your Mom and I were thinking of going to a National Park. What do you two think of that idea?

    John said, Oh, that’s awesome!

I like that idea, Emily responded with excitement. When are we leaving? She added. We’ve never been to a National Park before.

Dad smiled and said, Good. Now we need to decide which National Park we want to go to. There are so many wonderful and beautiful places to go to. Mom listed the places they could go. Glacier National Park, Montana; Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming; Everglades, Florida; Death Valley National Park, and Yosemite National Park, California; or the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. After looking at maps and brochures they decided to go to Yellowstone National Park. Mom said, Yellowstone National Park will have a lot of interesting things for us to enjoy, the sites will interest everyone no matter what age.

Yes! exclaimed Emily. We will see a lot of new things and do different things there. I can’t wait, fidgeting around with excitement.

When school was out, John, Emily, and their parents started getting all the things together they would need for their summer trip to Yellowstone National Park. The trip would take five days and on the way Dad had different locations where they could camp for the night.

John liked camping and he knew what they were going to need for camping. They had an area in the garage designated for all the items for the trip. John knew they needed the tent, sleeping bags, pillows, stove, cooking pans, lantern, first aid kit, and the food needed for the trip would be the last thing to get. John and his family had a lot of experience camping.

Mom had some books on Yellowstone. So before the trip, the family would find the time to read all the information about Yellowstone. One evening Mom showed the family a brochure that talked a little about the history of Yellowstone. Mom started reading it to everyone.

Yellowstone National Park along with its natural wonders such as the geysers, hot pots and hot springs was not officially discovered until the 1870’s beginning with the explorers Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition. Once receiving information about the area and realizing the need to preserve the natural beauty, the United States Congress created Yellowstone National Park in 1872.

Jan reads to the family, Yellowstone is located in the United States of America, in the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho; an area of three thousand five hundred square miles. Yellowstone measures about sixty miles on each side. One side is in Idaho, one side in Montana and two sides in Wyoming.

John exclaimed, Yellowstone is really big; will we see it all?

We can’t see everything in one trip, but maybe we can go back sometime, Dad said.

Near the middle of June, the family loaded up the van with everything they had collected for the trip. They had two coolers with cold food, one box of dry food, and everybody’s suitcases. John thought Emily was bringing too much. It looked like she had more toys than clothes. John and Emily were so excited they were finally leaving. Emily was thinking they would be there soon; not understanding the distance and time it would take. She just knew they were going on a long trip.

    Chapter 2

    The Adventure Begins

Finally they were leaving heading north from their home. It would take five days to get to Yellowstone. Florida was hot when they left and Mom said Yellowstone would still be cold. She had packed winter clothes and coats. Living in Florida they didn’t need heavy winter coats, just light coats. Emily and John had never been in very cold weather. Yellowstone will be a new and exciting
